The game is 15yrs old now, as Blizzard likes to boast, and it really shows in some areas.
One area, in particular, is the naming of characters. Most newer MMOs offer some kind of ‘First’ and ‘Surname’ feature. With the millions of characters that have been created over the years, it’s rather difficult finding a name that hasn’t been taken; mapped names included.
I’d love to see an update to the naming system, allowing players to have the aforementioned.
E.g. Caffè Latte > Caffelatte

I concur. I would like to be able to have a surname for my guys. Or even spaces like Zulnagh mentioned.

I stand behind this requested feature!
Spaces or Surnames would be super awesome!

Agree. Spaces and/or surnames would really help.

I’m in. Would be a great addition/option to have.

While it would be great, its probably not a simple undertaking.

it’s really not that difficult. a lot of people use the most childish, and absurd names i have ever seen. if you want ‘istabzyou’, or ‘fluffyhealer’ you may be in trouble, but you can find a decent ordinary name with just a little looking.
I hope Blizzard can implement this. Would be a great thing for Roleplay servers especially so that they don’t need to rely on an addon to have a spaced name or use certain unique characters in it like ’ or -.

I’ve always wanted to give a troll a ‘ in its name since most of my characters are darkspears and zandalari Bc I love trolls lore and yea

I fully agree. There’s been many instances of going through name after name taken that I just get fed up with it and go with some random cobbled name that’s good enough.
Like what Zulnagh said, at least make it so we’re able to put a space in or something.

Abused in what way? Overwatch allows you to use any name you want since your account is tied to your battlenet#.
They’ve already done it for one of their games, they can do it again.

If they just added apostrophe, hyphen, and spaces, and maybe bumped up the number of characters allowed, it’d do wonders to allow more names. You could add a space and a surname if you wanted. Toss an apostrophe in there…lots of options.
It really annoys me that so many NPC names have apostrophes yet we can’t use them. Really needs to be fixed.

The thing is those new games are built with surnames/lastnames in mind. With WoW the database was never designed with such in mind which would require a lot of work to redo. Our names are unique so the game knows which character gets what item/quest/achievement/ect. Making changes to that comes with its own set of risks that might not be worth taking.
Coming up with an original name is not that hard. If you’re struggling there are websites that can help. Or load up windows character map and use ASCII
https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ such as this one.
“it’s not that hard to come up with a name just consult third party websites and use characters you don’t know how to type”
It’s not a great suggestion. I also don’t think that any of us here is qualified to speak on how their databases are built or how difficult it’ll be to code it into the game (unless you work for blizzard I guess), so the most we can really do is comment on if we think it would be a good addition to the game.
Which it totally would be.

Agreed, the current naming system blows.
Not being able to name a character similar to how they’re represented by the names of NPCs in the game is stupid.

I agree with spaces but I will never support surnames.
I like being a one named toon. Juuhachigou has no surname. Ill be damned if I get forced to name all my characters Windrunner because I lack inspiration and I will roleplay to be from the Windrunner family if you force me with a lastname.
I use the term ‘surname’ loosely; it was to represent a space in the character’s name, like the example given, “Caffè Latte”.
I also don’t want Blizz to force people into having a spaced name, but having the option would be nice.
