Other mmo games?

I have been playing wow for so many years, it’s not like I don’t want to try to play other MMOs. It’s just other MMOs are trash compare to wow. I have tried so many different games in the past, especially those claimed to be the wow killer sort…but none of them succeeded. It is stupid to play the same game for 10+ years, but I’m only into MMOs, It’s not that I have a choice…
I don’t blame other developers for this though, they just don’t have the cash to make a game like wow, not gonna happen in next 3 years at least. The only thing that might be able to compete is riot’s new RPG, but it’s only hope.

Agreed. WoW irks the living heck out of me often, but it’s the only game I like. I loved SWTOR, but they scale EVERYTHING so there is zero sense of progression.

Ah yes, famously cash strapped atudios like Square Enix, Microsoft, and EA.

Barely a penny to rub together with those three.

I tried playing pretty much all the main stream mmos that game out (I love mmos and wanted to play a second on the side casually) but all of them never held my interest once i hit max level or some I even couldn’t stand and stopped before max level. I played games from like AoC, TSW, Aion, Rift, Tera, ESO, LotR, STO, CoH, Matrix, etc. I played UO and SWG before WoW came out also. But anyways, I loved SWTOR to where I almost made that my main mmo but they instead made it f2p and the quality went down hill so I play maybe like a month a year to just catch up on the story since they are so short.

I have been playing a lot of New World which I know there are tons of bad reviews on the game and I honestly don’t know why I love it so much but something about it. But anyways, overall I get what you are saying and yeah will be interesting to see how the LoL mmo turns out (if it even makes it as some get cancelled during development like EQ Next).

Not to mention the fact that their update cadence is glacial and just yesterday their creative director quit!

I like ffxiv, but it’s not WoW. Despite it’s grinds, some of them are necessary and don’t need to be so drawn out, but give me a reason to log on an find the next thing. Though to be fair I just haven’t been able to keep playing SL. Stopped at the beginning of ZM - saw the writing on the wall.

however, they let the open world players go and catered to - well, different thread altogether there - so, I enjoyed it, but it’s not the same WoW I started in MoP. Each expac seems to be designed to suck the fun out of something. But there’s nothing like getting on and kicking but for a few hours rather that reading.

Im in the same boat. I been playing wow since 2006. I skiped some xpack due to life changing events.
I try all of them. I liked wargammer online the most. Too bad it died. Gw2 is my next choise, but i got tired of grinding same events that give you dame items all the time.
Eso was lityle too boring for me with all that dialog and clunky comabt.
I guess wow it is.

I play all the big MMORPGs. WoW the most, though not in Shadowlands. It’s the one I always hope has something great in its future.

But the other biggies do some things WoW doesn’t do as well.

FINAL FANTASY XIV
-Amazing story and characters
-Some of the best music out there
-Hardest instanced content in MMO gaming in Ultimates, which only reward cosmetics.
-Decent armor dyes for customization
-Only need one character to do everything (I miss alts when I play FFXIV though)
-Unique classes

ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE
-Immersive world
-Gear stays mostly relevant due to horizontal progression, changes your builds when you get it
-Fun crafting system where with enough time you can master everything
-Great story (but makes no sense if you do it out of order)

GUILD WARS 2
-Immersive world
-Best world bosses of any MMORPG
-Great dyes for customization
-Best mount system of any MMORPG
-Horizontal progression, your best gear will remain your best gear. You will chase cosmetics.
-Awesome soundtrack, but not quite FFXIV
-Unique classes

NEW WORLD
-Immersive world
-Excellent crafting
-Fishing is fun
-They’re working on making this game better, I hope they succeed

((EDIT: To be clear though I don’t think WoW should be horizontal. I am iffy on whether not ESO should be even. GW2 was designed as horizontal so it works well there))

It really depends on what you’re looking for, I can assure you that there are other MMOs with much better storytelling than WoW out there. WoW is top tier in graphics, animation, PVE (raid and dungeons) and PVP, otherwise it’s pretty mediocre.

Keep an eye out for Ashes of Creation

One issue here is how people view WoW killer as some sort of auto-win for Warcraft.

Is FF the WoWkiller? No.
Is GW2 the WoWkiller? No.
Is ESO the WoWkiller? No.

But look at it from the other side.

Is WoW the FFkiller? No.
Is WoW the GW2killer? No.
Is WoW the ESO killer? No.

Games can in fact co-exist. And all four of these games are extremely profitable with devoted playerbases.

Oh Warhammer Online, how i miss you…

The original that is, not the private server.

MMO killers do not exist, MMOs live and die for their communities, it is up to the MMO to retain community, WoW will not die for any new MMO because it will always have a Fanbase that will allow it to survive, MMOs that persist alongside WoW will do it because they were able to capture a Fanbase.

The worst WoW crisis was not caused by any MMO, it was Blizzard itself by upsetting its fanbase to the point that it started to go away.

That means Runescape was the WoW Killer

Basically 100% agree.

Misquoting Josh Strife Hayes here: WoW isn’t a game, it’s a culture, it’s a cookbook, it’s a fandom. Even if you released a game that does everything WoW does twice as well it would not beat WoW because it’s dedicated fans would stick around no mater what because it’s a part of their identity and that doesn’t change overnight.

As proof of concept: Look at Everquest.

I’ve played ffixiv once and it was okay. If it stood between wow and ffxiv I’d rather play the latter. With that said I don’t play wow or ffxiv. Wow really burned me out with BfA and then SL.

The mmo I play right now is daoc on a freeshard with around 1300 players. It’s a blast. I wouldn’t recommend the live version of daoc. It’s abysmal and has no sense of a community whatsoever.

As for a wow “killer” that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon. What kills new mmos for me is the micro-transaction nature of them. I tried lost ark and it was all kinds of awful. If you’ve played one Asian f2p mmo you’ve played them all. They’re all the same.

Exactly, that’s why games like FF14 and swotor don’t really compete with each other, because their fanbase is mostly different, it’s not enough that you like an MMO, you also have to like the franchise, and if it’s something completely new, it has to be impressive enough to catch an audience.

Clearly the quality of the gameplay and the content is important, but as long as it is not mediocre it is always salvageable through other points.

To personal taste, for me the biggest competitor of WoW is FF14, because it is very strong in one of the weakest points of WoW, storytelling, and the gampley in general not inferior, or too inferior (it really depends on who you ask I think it’s just different). But it’s never going to really eat into the WoW audience because they’re just so different in style.

Yeah, all the “top tier” MMO’s do very different things.
FF is all about story and being a JRPG
ESO is about being a console game, with some of the best controller play and great voice acting.
GW2 is the super casual experience, with a big focus on optional content and sideways progression.
Black Desert is over the top combat and waifu graphics.
etc etc.

WoW doesn’t really try to do any of those things, which is fine.
(though it wouldn’t hurt to improve in any of those areas either, but that’s true of all of them.)

I dream with better storyteling in WoW, the fantasi of Warcraft is GREAT, they just need to put true effort in it. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I really want a 40k game.

But I’m saying that cautiously since GW is just as likely to give the full Diablo Immortal experience along with it. Honestly without my 3D printer I wouldn’t even play the tabletop game because that’s a good 75% pay to win.
