Especially when you consider that for a good chunk of the 80s and 90s, a lot of people didn’t even have cable/satellite and were stuck with whatever they could catch over the air. I grew up in the 90s with nothing but ABC, PBS, and occasionally CBS coming in on the odd early morning when atmospheric conditions lined up to bounce its signal the right way. Even worse there’d be random times when ABC would cut in and out due to a storm passing through, which meant if my family wanted to watch something that evening our options were whatever was on PBS (usually something like NOVA, Nature, or Masterpiece Theater) or one of our VHS tapes we’d already seen at least 5 times.
I’ll echo what people have already said: nobody wants to sit around watching a bunch of nobodies pat themselves on the back for receiving a fake award while at the same time wagging their finger at us like their opinion matters more than anyone else’s.
Plus the Oscars are now even less about the performance and more if they checked all the correct woke boxes.
