Ok I’m sure this question has been answered 10000000000 times but I can’t find a recent example that makes sense.
I’m a returning player, been gone for 5ish years…
My son and wife started playing with me and they want to experience the story in a way that makes sense.
We started new char’s and picked draenor as that is the ??out of time?? expansion. What order should we run through chromie time? I think once we hit 60 we will need to lock xp so we don’t get stuck forced into dragonflight. Any help would be amazing. even an idiot link to an already created guide that I missed.
thanks in advance
While WoD takes place in an alternate reality/timeline Draenor, the actual plot ties in to the events of Mists of Pandaria before it to really understand why we traveled to a different timeline in the first place.
The lore is mostly chronological between the expacs anyway though aside from stuff that got retconned down the line
I think you can skip the majority of Vanilla questing zones though since a lot of it is zone-contained or just exposition/worldbuilding. Most of the stuff that is relevant to the actual story as a whole came from the dungeons/raids back then
So you can mostly just do Burning Crusalde/Outland → Wrath of the Lich King/Northrend → Cataclysm zones (Vashj’Ir, Uldum, Twilight Highlands, and Mount Hyjal) → Mists of Pandaria → Warlords of Draenor → Legion → Battle for Azeroth → Shadowlands → Dragonflight
Some would say to skip Shadowlands, but I personally think the zone questing itself isn’t that bad and most of the zones genuinely look nice

it’s worth noting that in order to experience all of the main storylines through chromie time, it will take multiple characters. Chromie time is designed for one character to level through one expansion’s zones by level 60.
Also, from a lore perspective, the story while leveling through the zones of an expansion is more or less the intro of the story to that expansion. Most lore events that took place would have happened at max level. So there will still be major blind spots and it will seem incomplete in a lot of cases unless you take the time to do the era’s max level quests, raids, etc. as well. There’s a ton of lore videos that exist on the entire history of warcraft though, so you could supplement any gaps by looking for videos on various subjects too.
But all that said, there’s almost 30 years of story in this franchise. Including a lot of it in books outside of the game completely. Enjoy the journey, there’s a lot of cool stuff to learn.

Thanks a ton for the reply both of you!! I really appreciate it. I think the idea of going through chromie time then watching videos to get the rest makes sense. We really appreciate it!!!
