Orc Eyebrows.
Troll Beards and Eyebrows .
Forsaken and Goblin Facial Hair (And brows).
Better and more robust facial hair, for Blood Elves.
My never ending quest of wishing for eyebrows for orcs has always included the rest. Though orcs most of all (for me) represent something in how we portray designs to an audience.
If you want a character design example of lore not being shown in-game, look no further than the orcs . Many times Iāve seen people say:
āMy theory is, because Thrall was raised by humans he never thought to shave them off. He just didnāt know.ā
But it really shows how normal, and how natural, of a feature it is to have that no one noticed every other instance an orc has been portrayed with them:
TCG, Comics, Old projects, WCII, every version of Gulādan except in-game (and possibly the Reforged model?). Blademasters that people seem to love. Mists of Pandariaās orc just went over peoples head. Every orc in the movie.
This is an example of the way we experience the game is not how Azeroth looks. The lack of eyebrows is the customization version of a portal room. Makes little sense and is only there (or not there) for the player.
Thrallās features are only to connect to the player, but that is an injustice to the rest of the orcs. In a way, it gives lacking eyebrows the implication that if you donāt have them, you look unwelcoming orā¦āsavageā. Itās more brutal. When in fact, the characters Iāve seen with them still look just as brutal. If anything, the eyebrows further accentuate the emotions. If the whole philosophy behind the orcs was to make them an actual culture that were not just faceless pawns to be enemies , then why design them to give people the false idea that they for, some reason, do not have them ? Why only let Thrall have them for us to connect to, when we should be readily connecting with all the orcs?
From the beginning, Thrall was unique. Everyone knew his story. I was moved by it because I connected to it for very personal reasons, and yes his design does help. But itās largely because heās the only orc they actually give softer features to, where as the rest are forced to be harshā¦when in reality, they are just as diverse.
So gather around, join me. Let us reflect again on the lack of facial hair or the lack of meaningful facial hair.
If Forsaken have hair on their head, they should have it on their face. Derek Proudmoore whoās been dead for many naughty naughty years, and should be a skeleton in a coat, was reborn with a full head of hair and a goatee. Nathanos made more sense because it happened right away. Iāve read in two separate cases in the books of Forsaken being mentioned with facial hair. They should have scraggly eyebrows and beards. (Again, this is sadly the males being forced to look mean.)
Trolls especially need their facial hair expanded upon, and I donāt need to go into detail why trying to separate them is no good. Volājin alone is proof enough.
There are many examples in Hearthstone helping these cases, but I try not to think too hard on Hearthstone. The way I approach Hearthstone is that none of it is canon (yet, I know I know.), so it could be used against players by saying āWell none of that is accurate to use as an example.ā However, Hearthstone may not be canon, but I feel it heavily expands upon the diverse bodies and looks of different races in the world which makes troll beards and orc eyebrows examples get more of a plus.
And goblinsā¦well. Just give them the options. Nobody should be without them.
(For some reason, the pandaren exist in this weird eyebrow to no eyebrow bubble. Some female pandaren face patterns have a dark line above their eye going along their eye spots, like an eyebrow. And the male pandaren have a fully modeled eyebrow option. There is more of a ā¦allowance for furred races to not have them. But I think with the way this world works, a social species who relies on facial queues should have eyebrow patterns. Just take a look at how dogs and their evolution to develop eyebrow muscles to communicate with humans better. There is a real purpose for the feature in a species who communicate on a deep social level.) If it was never mentioned as a culture thing, it is an unnecessary design choice that should be changed now.
