Orc Backstory Help (New to RP)

I'm trying (painstakingly) to create some backstory for my Hunter. I've never RPed before and am trying to learn as I'm going.

I do not want to go a path where I say that I am the son of a well-known NPC in game. I feel like something like this could be easily derailed.

With that being said, how does the RP world feel about creating "bastard son" characters?

The main part of the story I'm working on is that my name is Ragknar, "son of Ragknar", who's father, Ragknar (obviously), was so narcissistic he named his only son after himself.

To give my character later flavor in development, I want to tie myself to Ga'nar in some way. Would I be breaking any kind of written or unwritten rules by naming my father, Ragknar, the bastard son of Ga'nar?

I have a lot of ideas I'm trying to tie in, but if this main point doesn't work, then I have to scrap everything and try again.
People tend to dislike connecting yourself to lore characters in ways like that :(
And thats ok!

I can change some things around. Instead of being the son of Ga'nar, maybe my father fought under Ga'nar's command and still achieve what I'm trying to do.

I'm a complete noob with RP rules, this is why we ask questions.

That seems like the better way to go imo
i think if you really wanted to have ragknar be a narcissist you could say he had 3 sons, all named ragknar.

you could also have part of your story to find them.

just spitballing here though
I prefer the name Uhtred, son of Uhtred.

It's a tough thing to discern, especially with how Blizzard treats the PC.

We play a game where we're close friends with all our faction's leaders, run their personal errands, commanded a whole portion of our faction's military, are the masters of every other member of our class and have killed the vast majority of the threats on Azeroth.

RPers tend to dumb that down, though. Waaaaay down.

Generally speaking, the furthest someone will take these kinds of concepts is "I met Thrall once, we shook hands and he went on his way," or "I was there at Icecrown, I helped hold the lower halls from undead while the heroes fought Arthas."

Personally, the most significant thing Cannibal has done, in relation to lore events or major lore characters, was he was a personal guard of Nazgrim while stationed at Conquest Hold. This kind of came to bite me later on, but I had written this story for Cannibal back in WotLK, when Nazgrim was just a boring Sergeant NPC who I was confident wasn't going to be relevant at all in future expansions. Instead, he became a Legionnaire in Cata, a General in MoP, his own raid boss in Siege of Orgrimmar and is now one of the Four Horseman serving the Lich King. Since this, I've changed Cannibal's relation to him to just state that he received orders from Nazgrim from time to time.

The furthest I've seen one be taken and be publicly accepted is under special circumstances, in this case a demon hunter. Since their history is very clearly defined and doesn't really allow for much deviation, the claim was that they were personally trained by Illidan for a short time while at the Black Temple. This kind of thing is considered "okay" because there's not really another option.

Which, keep in mind, this is just my experience with RP communities in general. At the same time, I've seen people claim to be Varok's other son, personal slayers of Deathwing and even crazier, and they're usually able to find a group to go along with it. There was even a time when my RP group went crazy with it for fun. Cannibal ruled the Earthen Ring, a friend ruled the Black Harvest, another was in charge of Silvermoon's military.. it was a good time, but that kind of stuff doesn't usually flow in public, open RP.
