Opinions on trying a horde character

So I bought SL and used the 120 boost for a horde character for the dynamic duo achievement. It might just be from not starting out at the beginning and getting into the lore or maybe it’s from rolling on my alliance character for so long but I cannot get into it. Any similar experiences?

nope. you’re a weirdo.

Sometimes you just don’t feel certain changes, and that’s okay. I’ve leveled a few Horde characters from level 1 to 120 (technically, I started in vanilla and leveled over time), just to see the Horde story. But, for me, there are just some outstandingly egregious things about the Horde that bother me, at least with certain races. I thought the Horde was a great faction in Warcraft III, for example, but they’ve kinda butchered them heavily for WoW.

On the other hand, it’s also shown me that there are no differences between players on both sides.

Same, I could never get into it whenever I faction changed. Even a blood elf dh I leveled to 120 I just don’t want to play. Probably because I don’t know anyone on the horde.

Embrace the “badness” of the Horde. I found most of the players to be really friendly, and there are times that it is fun to be the bad guy reeking havoc and killing a village. However, if eating your victims (looking at you undead) isn’t your cup of tea, play a nature loving Tauren or a snobbish Nightborne. We have variety which is what I like. I play a human in real life, so I enjoy playing something else in my games. The Alliance is primarily human looking races of varying sizes. Welcome to the Horde!

I think this is my issue I play a night elf hunter and I can’t tell you how wrong it felt to do quests right off the bat for the war chief

Well, you dove into the deep end as a capped character in a faction you don’t play. It doesn’t surprise me you can’t get into it, you have zero connection to that character or it’s leveling experience.

I feel the same every time i try and play an alliance character

the horde has always been boring to me, compared to the alliance. it’s just my preference, lots of people find it the other way around. i still play on my max level horde for the full story, but i couldn’t main one.

Horde is okay but the aesthetics are drab, the cities don’t feel like cities besides Silvermoon which mostly feels like an inconvenience to get too.

Yeahhh I definitely should’ve started a new one but I wanted the achievement before SL. I’ll have to try one out from the beginning thanks man

Depending on how “into” the lore you are, I’d recommend going with an Orc, Troll, or maybe Tauren. Those are the races that I feel would have the least issues with how the Horde storylines go. Though even then, you’ll run into problematic storylines.

If you’re not that into the lore, though, do whatever. Plenty of happy Blood Elf players out there, lol.

This is a huge issue for me I love the nature and scenery in alliance zones and cities. I see someone say horde had pretty ones so that was the first thing I did and Ogrimmar was cool but definitely not my thing. The only one that I liked was silver moon

The Horde is a little harder for Americans/Europeans to get into because it has a more Eastern feeling ideology. Honor is a huge deal to the Horde, and how something happens is more important than why something happened.

An example of this would be the burning of Teldrassil. Sylvanas killing a whole bunch of Night Elf civilians isn’t inherently wrong in the eyes of the Horde, what makes it wrong is how she did it. She burned innocent, unarmed people alive from a safe distance, which is dishonorable and why the Horde took issue with it. You can see this in how Saurfang responds “There is no HONOR in this”. His issue isn’t that she is killing people, but that she is dishonorably killing people.

A prime example would be the confrontation between Garrosh and Krom’gar in Stonetalon Mountains.

Stonetalon Mountain Spoilers Overlord Krom'gar bombs an innocent village full of unarmed druids. Garrosh portals over to ask what just happened.

Krom’gar’s defense is that he was only doing what was commanded of him (If you are commanded to do something dishonorable by your lord, you are still being dishonorable if you do it, but not as dishonorable as your lord is). Garrosh gets properly pissed off at this because Krom’gar implies that while he himself is dishonorable, Garrosh is even more dishonorable for giving him those commands.

Garrosh tells Krom’gar that his orders were to secure Stonetalon Mountains for the Horde. Garrosh also says that Krom’gar instead chose to destroy the land, and murder innocents… children even. Garrosh then says that Krom’gar’s dishonorable actions have brought shame to the entire Horde, chucks Krom’gar off of a cliff, and demotes the entire army.

Basically if you want to know what the moral center of the Horde is, run ICC and listen to what Saurfang says. “Honor, no matter how dire the battle, never forsake it”.

The Alliance, however, is much easier to understand for Americans/Europeans because they have a similar ideology to that of the Western world.

Yeah you’re going to have to either level a new character or do old content on your boosted one.

You need to actually experience the horde to know the horde. You cant just jump into end game and expect to feel a connection to your character and faction.

I never play any character I boost because I just dont care about them.

And I won’t use my boost until I’ve spent many levels leveling a new toon to “know” them and their spells. I will usually use my boost on a toon 90-100. At that point I am committed to them.

Im the other way around… i’ve played ally ever since the beginning. I made the switch to Horde a few years ago now and never looked back. Every time I play on Alliance it only takes me a few minutes to want to log out.

Yeah, usually people mean Silvermoon and more recently Suramar when they point to the Horde’s “pretty” areas. What they don’t tell you is that orcs have been put in charge of designing the entire Horde’s architecture, so every Horde territory outside of the racial cities will be covered in spikes and mud huts.

You could try leveling a Horde alt all the way through to see if the story grows on you, but there’s nothing wrong with just favoring one faction over the other. My most progressed toon has been Horde for years, and I still don’t consider myself Horde.

I’m on a like GCD so  Nail on the head my friend.

I was a huge Horde fan but eventually tried Alliance and enjoyed it. Still mainly play Horde, but I’d say a lot of players sort of stick with and feel attached to their preferred faction so it isn’t that weird.
