Opinion: Frost Mage Vs. Shadow Priest

Which one would you prefer to play? Currently I have one of each (mage 24, priest 18) and I’m torn on which to finish first. I’m coming back to the game my experience from before in beginning up to the final days of Lich King. I originally played warlock/rogue/mage but wanted a new experience it just seems more difficult with priest but I’m hoping it gets easier after 40.

If its pvp you want priest is strong. Mage is also strong, but not as strong. And priests will eat the mage.

If its pve you have to ask yourself if you want to heal or DPS. IMO I’d go spriest because I like the siphon life aspect of the spec and the racial priest aspect gives it a bit flavor. Nothing says you’re dead like an undead priest dropping a VE DP and SWP on you.

Priest is stupidly easy if you use wand spec. Big question is pvp style since raid spots to shadow spec will be limited need depending on how much your guild cares about min/max and dps meters. I have both but I’m partial to priest but that’s what I played hardcore through end of sunwell and even into wotlk casually

They play totally differently, so both.

Priest will not get easier. Shadow priests might solo better than either other priest spec but they’re still not really built for soloing; their top-tier talent is “I provide my group constant passive healing,” which doesn’t mean much if you’re not in a group. You want a pure damage class, mage will always be better at that. It wasn’t until WotLK that “all damage specs should be interchangeable” was even whispered as a design goal.

True about WOTLK buy shadow priest. could easily be number one dmg and was alot on raid fights in TBC. There biggest issuie in Vanilla was mana and that was fixed in TBC. Even now you can top in MC on fights because they dont last long.

As far as leveling. I am currently in my 30s using a disc/holy build. Only shadow i have atm is spirit tap i focus on spirit gear and have zero downtime. Ive drank water only a few times while soloing. Im also able to heal better than shadow so i can heal fot instance quest or just a break.
Kinda a best of both worlds. Kill slightly slower but i also never drink so im just as fast if not faster.

You will have a better overall experience as a mage, more gear available free food and water easy map movement will get groups much easier is a top tier pvp and pve class.

Shadow priest is good at dueling… and that’s about it unless you find a guild that allows you to be the 1 token Shadow priest.

Mage is also a great first character simply because they are the best money making class in the game atm and the farms can be done with greens of the eagle.

A mage is actually my first character and i use him to trade food/water port around and make money for my other characters
