Ive been playing a lot of classic and I realize the thing I have the hardest time with in retail. There is NO challenge at all to questing, levelling, dailies, etc… I would be much happier if there was some sort of challenge to open world. I can pull 5-6 mobs, an elite mob and have it barely make a dent in my health. I would love to see Blizz put some more actual danger back in the world so you don’t just run mindlessly through it.
Is like if someone asked ‘why doesn’t Classic have m+ dungeons?’
(I play both and they’re just two different games, Classic is wholly just what you said- open world but endgame is easy. Retail is the opposite).
simple solution…normalize gear in open world down so no one has mythic/m+ gear. challenge restored!
There isn’t in Classic either.
You cant pull 5 mobs, and an elite and survive in classic - thats why theres a HC - its difficult not to die in the open world.
What I like to do is the “ironman” challenge but like… simpler. DO NOT USE your heirlooms if you have just play the game as you usually would! Pick an expansion and play through that. just use questing greens and other gear you have. Challenge accpeted! I got through around… just shy of 70 before I gave up but hey it worked though. I was having fun and I learned a bit how to play the class better than relying on the looms. but that’s just me…
IMO the difference in open world classic vs retail isn’t much. Both are extremely easy, but Classic includes a high level of inconvenience to draw out encounters in some situations, and limits the amount of classes that can mass AOE to clear a given area.
I’m tired of this lie that Classic is “hard”. It’s never been hard, it’s a complete joke, you can clear any content in it without being max level. Also, there’s open world content in retail that has “challenge” to it. There’s bosses with decently punishing mechanics that often require lower geared players to team up. At the end of the day though, retail’s focus shifted to instanced content over open world.
I can’t tell if you’re serious or not but this is a terrible idea. We play to progress our gear and feel powerful. Take that away and what is the point of gear?
It very much had a /s at the end (implied) They’re doing a hyperbole to show the contrast between retail and classic.
Well you never know. Classic players are a different breed. I bet if retail leveling/questing was to become “more challenging” that these players would still just play Classic.
I would also like to see this.
Switching from zone progression to world scaling in Legion really took the challenge and excitement, along with the feeling of accomplishment, out of open world questing. Now, each fight is exactly the same and the only way to get any sort of challenge even using the weakest specs is to pull several mobs. In some cases, like my blood death knight, I need to pull a lot more because her auto-heal are so overdone.
To this end, my suggestions are:
1). Add play options
a) Easy Mode: scaled progression (everything scales to character’s level)/low danger
b) Challenging Mode: in-zone progression (each zone starts out challenging and then, with gained xp and gear, gets easier)/medium danger
c) Hard Mode: in-zone progression (each zone starts hard and then, with gained xp and gear, gets easier)/high danger
2). Put rng back into attacks and heals within a range for both the player characters and mobs
3). Add one wandering unkillable mob in each expansion in one zone (ie Fel Reaver in Hellfire Pennisula)
At the same time, I would want to see xp options added as well:
a) Explorer- original xp for each expansion (for those that want to experience the game in full)
b) Defender- xp for lvl 10 to present lvl is divided up per expansion (for those that want to experience an expansion in full)
c) Conqueror- xp for lvl 10 to present lvl is divided up per zone (for those who want to barrel thru to endgame)
(Note: everything, the difficulty, the rewards, the purchase option levels would be tied to the individual character’s experience and gear level).
I’m a Classic player!
When I exclusively Classic’d I did end up feeling it was the best thing since sliced bread at the time. However I can understand why they feel the way they do. They enjoy that aspect of classic and want to feel in retail the same way.
To a large extent there is a lot more mechanics in even a +3/4 key to think about than just open world combat in classic. One is careful, impactful decision making, another is reactive, damage and speed based. They want the prior.
It should just be a personal option in retail that is opt in to make outdoor content more difficult. Like turning every NPC into an elite or something. No harm in that. I still think classic players enjoy more about classic than simply the tedious and slow nature of questing though, which anecdotally, leads me to the opinion that you replied to.
If you want challenge in the open world, there has to be parity of gear. allowing raiders to have god gear in the open world removes all challenge for them. unless you make the open world over tuned for casuals. in which case you drive off the people paying the bills. Something has to change to give you the challenge you want and it isnt the tuning.
You cant go get op raid rewards(op for open world) and then complain you have no challenge. Your progression is as unimportant as casuals progression is.
For real.
Take even more RPG out of WoW.
Make progression useless!
Down with personal improvement!
The only thing that matters is everyone else is forced to play the way you want!

There is NO challenge at all to questing, levelling, dailies, etc… I would be much happier if there was some sort of challenge to open world.
That’s done on purpose so people can get through the “junk” they don’t like and get to endgame as quickly as possible. However there is a solution.
Go to the AH and get level 1 gear then go into your talent tree and cancel all your talents. It should be harder.
If you want to artificially challenge yourself, play naked on warmode. Then start adding pieces back till you feel the challenge is adequate to your ability.
Generally thats what players do instead of waaaa the game is too easy.

I would love to see Blizz put some more actual danger back in the world so you don’t just run mindlessly through it.
Chromie Time Challenge: add affixes to Chromie Time and put the same XP buff on it that WM has.
Even while leveling, the open world is trivially easy in quest gear.
