Onyx Annulet: Redux

In case you missed it, Morgan Day was interviewed today and among the topics was this ring. Apparently devs overshot the ring’s power, and now don’t want to nerf it and invalidate players’ gains. So, there are no plans to nerf the primordial stones until at least 10.1.5.

Personally, this means one less slot to worry about regearing.

What was there to overshoot? It had to be more powerful than a regular ring or no one would use it. It’s not even overpowered. It’ll get replaced by a high heroic raid level ring.

It’s not even good for every spec but it seems to be very good for other specs. Just a crappy idea in general.

As a tank, I’ll probably be using it far into the raid

Wasn’t that their intended goal? To make the ring BiS until next tier rings replace it? Because I don’t think the ring is going to be beating Heroic or higher ilvl rings next patch. Heck, for many classes it might not even beat Normal ilvl rings

As forger of the one ring and a jewel crafter by trade I am pleased with this ring. And the new toy that forges a gem your character just sits there holding and admiring JC got :grin:

exactly, no stats make it eventually get overshadowed.

I prefer that actually, power gains lasting longer is good in my book.

You could be very well using it until 10.2 unless it gets nerfed.

i personally wouldnt mind

Once again they just show that they don’t properly test things before kicking it out the door. smh…

Well, the ring would have been fine if they hadn’t given it a 70-80% buff after it went live

the smarter play would have been to make it a 440 ring with 3 gems to pick your own stats. Then in the next tier a proper 2 stat ring would outshine it.

So the ring was TOO powerful, and they held back from nerfing it?

Someone who plays the game should really sit down with the development team and give them the bad news.

I was planning to make a post about a redesign of the ring, but I might as well post it here, given the title of this thread:

The system for the Onyx Annulet is overly gimmicky and doesn’t gel with the rest of the gear in the game. So I decided to do a redesign:

The Annulet has a fixed Stat and two customizable stats. The final slot on the ring is an extra proc/buff that is customizable.

So the Annulet’s item window would read like this:

Stamina <= Fixed stat
Custom Stat 1
Custom Stat 2
Proc/Special Effect

The custom stats for the ring are determined by the type of stone you insert into the first two slots. You cannot have a repeat stone in either slot.

Arcane => Haste
Earth => Mastery
Fire => Crit
Frost => Versatility
Nature => Avoidance
Necromantic => Leech
Shadow => Speed

The final slot determines the ring’s special effect/proc. This effect does not scale and has no effect on the ring’s item level. These would be the same effects we currently see on the current elemental stones, minus the ones that react to each other (Ex: Entropic Fel Stone).

Upon getting the ring, its Stamina starts at 1. Inserting stones into the slots of the ring to determine the custom stats also set to those stats to 1. In order to increase these stats, Dormant Primordial Fragments have to be tempered into the ring. Each stat has a set amount of fragments required to raise that stat. As the stats on the ring are raised, so too does the ring’s item level.

Assuming we want to keep the ring instead of making it a one-patch thing, season 1 (AKA the current implementation) woulc cap the ring at 414. Season 2 would introduce a new tier of stones that would be capped a little below the mythic gear for that content tier. Same thing for subsequent seasons.

This should, in theory, result in making people want to continuously do the vault and kill rares on the Forbidden Reach to get stones to break down into fragments. I would add additional ways to get fragments, such as making them purchasable with Elemental Overflow and/or those tokens you can get from the treasure vault after doing mythic+/raids/PvP. It would also create a long-term project for those who are interested in that sort of thing, especially since you’d have some stat combinations that are difficult or impossible to get.

I don’t think this will end up being a big problem.

Echoing other’s sentiments, replacement point will vary spec to spec but for most people this will just take up bag space by heroic ilvl, which is 428 - 437.

For a lot of specs, it’s better than a mythic Aberrus ring.

I’d be interested to know which, has anyone posted sims for this somewhere? It would be fascinating to see this out-simming a 447/450 ring with secondaries on it.

Rogue specs, windwalker, mm hunter, feral I believe? There’s some data / extrapolations for gear ilvl that suggest rogues won’t even be taking it off until next expansion unless blizzard make changes to it.

Basically all the melee specs that currently prefer crit vers.

For casters if it wasn’t already garbage, it will be garbage compared to haste mastery rings of higher ilvl next tier.

Not to mention for healer damage nothing is even going to come close unless they make another similar item.

I don’t. I prefer having more stuff to get more often so that I have more things to get throughout the season. I like doing more things instead of just getting one thing once and being done with gearing.
