One thing I'm really surprised about Classic

People are actually genuinely pretty friendly in the Classic beta. If you’ve ever seen me post on these forums, you know how I really don’t like the WoW community and I made the decision probably 2-3 expansions ago to only play solo anymore because I got sick of dealing with it. I figured the community in Classic would just be more of the same, but I was willing to give it a shot because maybe the gameplay was better than retail (it is BTW).

I don’t know if it’s just because it’s the beta and the people they’ve selected for it are just more friendly in general, but people are genuinely way more friendly and helpful in Classic. Having people around while you’re questing isn’t a nuisance either, it’s a god send because yay, there’s someone to pull mobs from you while you’re pulling that other one away from them, or there’s someone to group up with to fight the big scary boss you’re having a rough time with. The silliest thing though is that I’m enjoying just going around buffing people and having them say thanks, some people even stop me and trade stuff to me because I gave them buffs. The game itself sets the tone that being helpful and polite to other people is the most beneficial for you, because they will help you and be polite in return for more of the same.

I don’t know if the community will stay this friendly on release, the Classic forums are honestly pretty awful, especially all the rage at streamers and people not getting beta keys. But I really hope it does, I haven’t interacted this much with other people in WoW in 5-10+ years, and I have yet to have a negative experience with anyone. I’m crossing my fingers it stays like this.

The ironic thing is you’re just gonna get “move to classic forums” or “another classic thread in here” since people are getting tired of the threads

I mean yeah I figured but I hope it will be okay here because the Classic forums are honestly pretty awful right now lol. I hope that’s not a sign of things to come when it’s released.

I worry about the community on Classic because of the people on the forums and the ones trolling General. I think the ones who got invited primarily are the streamers and ones who have had their accounts since then, and a few others, so I imagine many are generally nicer. But then you get the folks on Classic, or the ones who hope Live will die a miserable death, or that people who like Live are wrong and braindead etc etc, who will have access to Classic in August. And I worry.

Still, I do hope to see this community I was told Classic had. Up until now I haven’t seen it, but I’m not in the beta.

Beta communities as a whole have been friendly, even in normal WoW.

I’m hoping the way the game is set up punishes people who behave badly towards others so that they get a reputation. Because I don’t know if it’s just because it’s a small beta or what, but I already see people around and recognize them from doing stuff with them earlier out in the world, and they do the same to me.
I just hope that doesn’t turn into the toxic people running the show and excluding people for dumb reasons. But I’ve also already seen backlash for things like people saying you need to be at least level 18 to do Deadmines, and a lot of people saying that doing it at level 16 or 17 is just fine.

I’m just really crossing my fingers that the Classic community doesn’t let me down, I’m really enjoying actually interacting with people again in WoW and I really hope it continues to stay like this.

Wait until it goes Live.

I do sincerely hope that happens for you. Classic isn’t for me, I’ve been there and done that. I have my current group on Live. But for people who want that community back in Classic, I hope it’s there for you!

For Live servers, have you ever given RP realms a chance? We have our trolls but I find the community to be far more pleasant. Just a thought in case you haven’t.

You should at least give it a shot. I was convinced I wasn’t going to enjoy it at all, but honestly it’s a really solid game and I understand now why it became so popular in the first place. I’m genuinely surprised how much I’m enjoying Classic.

Even if the community does end up being crap, the game itself is still really fun surprisingly. It made me remember why I fell in love with this game in the first place, even though I started playing in late BC.

Or the other option:

People who have played live since the beginning, dont want it to die, but just dont feel like theyre on the same wavelength with the direction its headed.

Ive endured through a lot i didnt particularly enjoy, but stayed loyal. I just havent felt gripped - at all - by this expansion. Graphically, its great. Lots of nice QOL changes have been added, but nothing keeps me wanting to login.

Im in beta, and it just feels like a breath of fresh air. Lots of clunky, lots of regression, but its got me engaged. I dont proclaim classic is WAY BETTER to the point of being toxic, but retail has lost a lot off its fastball, so to speak.

Id love for both to thrive, but retail doesnt compel me to log in, and thats why im giving classic another shot (like friends and relatives).

This is 100% where I’m at, too. Classic isn’t the end all be all of peak MMO (I’m holding out for BC or Wrath servers personally), but it’s miles ahead of retail in terms of how much fun and enjoyment I’m having.

Oh I’ll for sure be dabbling in it. But I can already tell you there are little things. I wasn’t big on Classic when I did play it, I preferred BC and Wrath design, but it’s still different from modern games. But I am also enjoying Live because I love to collect things, and Classic is anti-collector. So it’s difficult to want to go back.

Still, I’ll have a character just to poke around.

What an interesting dichotomy that is.

I mean I’m honestly not surprised. These forums are also a lot worse than what people are actually like in game, too. And the majority of people on the Classic forums aren’t even in the beta, I bet.

That is where these threads belong. Not here.

You should definitely watch this video by Preach, he also played Vanilla when it was current and wasn’t really looking forward to playing it again because “been there, done that”, but he does a really good job of explaining why I’m enjoying it so much and why I’m so surprised I am.

And yeah, I’m also more of a BC and Wrath design fan. I can tell you that Classic WoW is a lot closer to that design model than current retail WoW, though.

That’s not really a good excuse to keep posting Classic discussions in the wrong forum. I mean, we asked for Classic to have its own forum for a reason. I don’t want to see this place flooded with Classic just because “they’re mean over there” and then have them all over here, too. Ya know?

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Classic should be a little bit less toxic in general just because the gameplay is much slower paced.

No one is going to get frustrated at new players in BRD because it’s the 200th time they ran it that week to grind something.

If I were to compare Classic and Legion, I’d play Legion every day instead. But Classic vs. BfA, Classic wins. Though I will say Classic IS new while BfA is currently 10 months old (cringe…) and it feels stale, so Classic is a breath of fresh air.

There are multiple reasons why Classic is desirable right now, and I agree. I wish I had the beta just to see how I feel about it compared to Live.

This is the attitude to have, too. We’re all World of Warcraft fans. We all have our favorite expansions. I think MoP had the best class design in the game, and that’s my opinion that, to other people, would be considered wrong! But we all want to see our game continue to exist, and so attacking either Live or Classic or a certain expansion isn’t productive. Seeing the game as the World of Warcraft is better, and we all want to see it thrive and flourish, no matter what version or kind of Warcraft it is.

I have seen that video. The problem is, I won’t know until I can experience it. No one can tell you why or how to enjoy a game, so while I can agree with certain points of his, at the end of the day I need to experience it to have a better idea of if it’s for me. As of now, I still don’t see Classic as the game for me because it punishes collectors. But that’s just my personal mind just being dumb.
