Once again a long maintenance at the wrong time

I know a long maintenance is required for big patch and new content days. But why can they not do this is the wee hours of the night when most of region is sleeping. It seems like the logical thing to do if you ask me. Start the maintenance from 1AM PDT til how ever long it takes. People have said many things to defend these patch times, such as:

  • blizz developers have lives too and you want them to work through the night? thats selfish of you.
  • it might be night time in your area but its daytime in other places. the world doesnt revolve around you!
  • just take the day off, you know its patch day
  • some people only play wow at night.

Here’s my response:

  • Ooooh noo, asking game developers to work an overnight shift 2-3 times a year is so selfish of me! have you ever worked an overnight shift, ever?
  • NA = north america. If im playing on an asian server then i dont expect them to give any cares about what time im playing here on the other side of the planet
  • I would like to play a game that i pay for on the first day of new content. i know its only 6 hours of a wait, but its still an extra 6 hours that could be avoided losing
  • fewer people play on NA servers from 1am pdt-8am pdt then 7am pdt-3pm pdt (facts)

I’m bored at work and i kind of enjoy these minor skirmishes on these forums, so bring it!

Because labor laws say that’d require voluntary overtime and Blizzard devs don’t want to work a graveyard shift twice a year.

why aren’t you working the graveyard shift?

Here we go again. As usual, we are not disappointed.

Or how about you go grab a sandwich, watch a movie or something, do some chores. A few extra hours won’t kill you haha.

Yea chill out man. The game isn’t going to go anywhere. Just log in when the servers are up. Go do something else for 8 hours.

Dear Elune.
You know the patch actually takes time to implement, right? Can you just let them do it without pointless complaints about them not patching in the middle of the night?

Graveyard shifts blow. Been there done that. I will never ask someone to work those hours!

With that said, hope everyone has a wonderful day tomorrow at work, home, or out and about!

I’m gonna get some extra housework done

I never understood the issue with Tuesday patches.

By 3pm everyone is getting home from school / work anyway. To me it seems like the middle of the day is when everyone would be the least impacted by sever downtime.

Typically I don’t care until patch day is extended until like 7pm but even then its just the ā€œooo shinyā€ aspect of it - in a month I’ll go back to being indifferent.

Listen time zones are a thing. Maintenance times are appropriate they been on Tuesday Pacific Daylight time for as long as I been playing.
Patience is needed and seems some people like the OP don’t have very much in the first place.

Would not stop the complaints and so blizzard works when it is convenient for them.

You would have oceanic people getting maintenance in their ā€˜prime’ time.

Is it possible to pull a muscle from rolling your eyes too hard?

Cause I think I did.

No matter WHAT time block they use, a large group of players is going to be inconvenienced by it.

Seriously. I will be working like a biggie boy to support my family. Eight hours is only bothersome if you have no life or responsibilities, or chose to take the day off knowing you would be waiting around all day based on the past 15 years.

You pretty much summed it up for yourself.

Seems logical to you because you’re not the one who would need to be in the company at that time. Also, keep in mind patches are delivered via CDN that Blizzard doesn’t necessarily control. So they have to coordinate their delivery windows with outside sources who would also need to be present during that patch window to handle any issues that come up.

Network engineers and server teams need to be available during these patches to ensure the realms are operating properly. It’s not just a handful of developers who need to be onsite for the patching process.

If thats the case then just sleep and wake up and play all night. :joy:

My job gives us two weeks off in the summer, usually first two weeks of July. They moved it up a week this year so I’m off work this week and next. Patch day sucks, but I’ll probably end up using it to do some chores that I didn’t bother doing over the weekend. And do some prep for dinner since I won’t be losing any game time by doing it then. <.<

So your responses …

ā€œMake them work overtime for MY benefit!ā€
ā€œWho cares about other countries, so long as ME AND MY FRIENDS are not inconvenienced!ā€

That’s what your responses boil down to.

Yes, it sucks, but no matter what time frame they shut down for, there are going to be a boatload of players that are upset over this.

I actually prefer graveyard, it’s how I’ve always been though.

Humanity has always had night owls, always someone to stay up for the overnight look out.

While not everyone is suited to it for the people who are it’s a breeze and much more enjoyable than a daylight shift.
