On World Buffs

A lot of people dislike world buffs. They think they are tedious to get, or unnecessary, or unfun. Let me prove these points wrong.

People say that world buffs trivialize the content - the truth is the content was already trivial to begin with. What world buffs do is give a fun power spike to those who like to see high numbers and fast kills. Those who do not want to use world buffs are not required to get them. And while the major complaint of world buffs forcing people to raid log was valid through most of classic era, the addition of the chronoboon eliminates this entirely.

Finally, world buffs are popular. SoM, which was marketed as “hard” vanilla without world buffs, became a complete flop with most servers but one dying before phase 2. SoD has all servers healthy and alive going into phase 2. Who wishes to slog through old content who’s only real difficulty is the harsh tuning? Certainly not me. So we see that world buffs are a net positive for vanilla wow. I hope Blizzard continues to make new and interesting world buffs like the ones we got.

Its almost like people dont have to get world buffs if they dont want to. If your guild makes you then join one that doesnt.

the more meaningful and impactful player-world interactions there are outside of raid logging, the better. not to say this means there should be daily quests; that’s not impactful or meaningful.

the scarcity and time-sink for world buff chasing is fun, because i know it gives me an edge over others, but if i have to skip it because i need to do something irl, it’s not severely punishing. it’s just numbers

i think the main city world buff’s should stay like rend, ony, zg, etc, but do away with the diremaul buff meta, and the flower meta imo.

SoM was a failure due to terrible launch timing, the WBs were not the primary reason.

World buffs are dumb and should be purged when you enter a raid.

It’s not about hard or easy, it’s just a dumb mechanic. What kind of meta is it to just stand in town. I’d be embarrassed as a dev.

SOM didn’t suck because of world buffs… people are so clueless…

It was like 5 months after TBC launched… Too Soon Executus!
They made the bosses harder and more HP… people didn’t want harder raids…

The key to things like the DM buff is to make getting buffs a Guild/Raid Pre Event. In classic prior to raiding, our guild would do 2 buff events where people could go on different nights, typically aligned with the Ony/Neph buff dropping. We typically had to turn people away from the running DM part, we also had plenty of people who were ready each week to create a summoning team to get people around the world as needed. Typically the entire event took about 20 minutes total.

Obviously this is more a 40m things, but very doable for 20m stuff as well if you want to do a parsing night, or where people just like to blow stuff up.

I wouldn’t mind if they made world buffs only work out in the open-world. That’d be great in fact.

But I also don’t care what they do with them because I’m not going to bother getting every single world buff every single lockout. If I have to, I’ll just make my own raids and not require world buffs.

Still, making the BFD world buff useless past lvl 39 is 100% a step in the right direction imo.

World buffs suck and people who get world buffs also suck.

Put the crutches down and walk away.

TRUE !!! The world buffs andies love using SoM as an example because it’s the only thing they can point to as a potential win for them. To bad it totally disproves their argument.

Also, we have TBC and Wrath to prove people don’t care about world buffs and will keep playing if they are gone.

The most people to ever raid in Classic raided in Wrath NAXX with no world buffs.

I love world buffs. They should make them way more tedious to get though.

Like give us Ony style mechanics, but make it uncheeseable.

Nobody cares what “they” think.

I actually wouldn’t mind this either tbh. Because the more tedious world buffs are to get, the more of an elitist thing they’d become.

Biggest problem I think detractors have with world buffs is the expectation between players that random pugs will go and get them since most are as easy as afking in a city until one drops and then slapping a Chronoboon on it. But make it take hours to get them and suddenly the expectation is only at the top 1% of people. Better that way tbh.

Yeah with how frequently Boon drops, it doesn’t feel earned at all. People even factor it into leveling it’s so reliable to get.

Scarcity makes the preparation you put into gathering them worth it.

I’d also like to see a setup where if you Chronoboon a buff, you can’t Chronoboon it again. That way if you want to collect all your buffs before raid, you have to collect them all quickly and without dying in the process. Just make the massive buffs feel earned.

Just dont do the meta if you dont like it?

Yes we did it too, and we did speed/parsing runs during MC and BWL. It was required to have all buffs before raid or you didn’t get loot. I think its a pain to have to go to Diremaul just to get a few buffs. Also I’m not sure why anyone enjoys going to Felwood and sitting around a flower preying that you grabbed the flower at the same time as the 20 other people standing in a circle. I still stand with getting rid of those out of the way buffs.
