On the necessity of alleviating tedium by flight

Stick with me for a second. Life breaks into opposites: Time passes as day and night, temperature breaks into hot and cold, gender into male and female, characteristics into masculine and feminine, etc. The laws of polarity are in all things and each thing is a half of a whole. Generally it’s not about right and wrong but finding the right balance. The two sets of muscles in our legs pull in opposite directions, which gives us balance. The pH level in our blood is kept in balance between acidic and alkaline chemicals. The country tips back and forth between conservative and liberal leadership, each pulling the other like the muscles in our legs. And yes, this is still about flight.

Wow breaks into good and evil, Alliance and Horde, PVE and PVP, solo and social activities, etc. The artists do a good job of contrasting characters, colors, zones, etc. Those who have played WoW long know it breaks into the fun, free, adventurous side and the tedious, hamster wheel-focused grindy side.

So, yes…I still have a point: I like BFA, but 90% of my time in it right now feels like the tedious, grindy side. For many of us, it’s half the game it should be. When I’ve taken years off from WoW, what I’ve missed is the thrill of flying through fantasy zones on my winged mount. It’s sorely missed right now and the game feels like half of what it was. We need the thrill of flying to balance out the tedium. Sorry, even the best “ground and pound” design just doesn’t solve this problem. It’s very simple: If the game was really better without flight, people wouldn’t use it. We all use it every chance we get. Even those that say it ruined WoW complain about it from atop their winged mounts.

Need some yin with the yang, eh?

I don’t think I’ve had enough Thanksgiving cider to actually understand. I will come back later after a 6 pack or 3 and try to get your meaning…

I wish I could have cider i have to go to work soon. But the tldr of it is…the game is boring without flying.

Agreed. There’s nothing they can do to make ground content fun for me.

The devs seem to like terrain mazes, but I hate them.

The devs seem to like daze as a mechanic, but all it does is annoy me.

The mob density is far too high. I want to be able to avoid most mobs. Constantly being in combat, some of that while dazed, is tiring. I want to enjoy the scenery, but I can’t when I have annoying trash mobs that I want nothing to do with trailing behind me and dazing me. I hate killing trash mobs.

The bottom line is that I cannot stand ground travel in WoW.

On the other hand, flying in itself is fun. I like to have fun. Even if ground travel was made tolerable, I want to fly because I enjoy flying. The devs don’t seem to realize this and seem to think that it’s primarily a matter of efficiency. For some players it probably is, but for me it’s a matter of wanting to have fun. I’m not having fun in open world content in areas where I can’t fly.

Then… you don’t like BFA. I don’t get why people feel the need to convince themselves they like something – probably just to cover their addiction?

If you need flying to avoid tedium then maybe realize the game ITSELF is tedious and something you probably wouldn’t be playing unless you for some reason felt obligated to continue playing.

Flying itself is fun? So you’d pay $15 a month just to fly around?

It’s pretty obvious that nothing I can say can make you see things from my perspective, based on the inflammatory tone of your post along with your post directly above it, so I’m not sure why I’m bothering to respond.

I wouldn’t pay $15/month “just to fly around”. I’m enjoying Legion content now, and a big part of that reason, for open world content specifically, is because I can fly to the content that I want to do now that I have completed Legion pathfinder. I’ll make stops along the way if I see something interesting like a pet battle for a pet I don’t own, a rare, a treasure chest, or to stop and enjoy the scenery from the top of a hill. I wouldn’t have done any of that without flight. You seem to be assuming that it’s the only part of the game that I’m paying for. It’s an important part for me personally, but not the only one.

Very small zones densly packed with mobs and bad travel paths.

Flying lets me get up and look around. Then if I want (choice) I can land where something interests me (agency) and do what I choose to do on my terms.

Others can do what they choose when and where they choose.

That is freedom for you ; ain’t it?

Again, you’re addressing the symptom not the disease.

(It’s the only nail emote in there…)

I’ve played the game on and off now for 11 years. In an expansion like WotLK, you could fly right away and it was a blast. It’s hard to forget that your favorite game used to be better, and all they need to do is put back your favorite thing to get it there.

They spread out the dailies too much this expansion to do them without flying - most of the time spent playing is travel time now and that is tedious.
