Its been a bit since I last seen one of these figure a refresher is always nice. But why Frost over Unholy when it comes to the DPS Spec? Frost is overwhelmingly picked in large amounts of content. And I’m curious as to why YOU play that spec?
Unholy for me as its the closest Ill get to a necromancer personally. I used to play a game called City of Villains ( still do technically i guess with Homecoming). And there Ive yet to see a game definie a “pet class” like a Mastermind.
A Necromancer Mastermind was what I played and fell in love with the pet style overlord theme. Unholy is the closest I get to do that.
no pets and a simpler way of doing things

I like snow, and I like berserkers… Frost fit along with having a little death mixed in.
I spent most of my time as unholy but, I recently tried frost. I really like the visual of frost spells better. Unholy pet summoning is cool too, just something about the frost spells.
Ask me this same question but inverted and I might have an answer.

Honestly, I only switched back to frost during the end of DF. I used to be a blood main for pve and UH in pvp. Then I gave frost a try and loved it in pvp. Now pve wise it feels better than it has in a lot of years.
I play frost over UH only because wounds exist. If there was a UH without wounds, I would roll that instantly.
It’s really just because of festering wounds.
I used to play both without any issue at all (mainly for pvp) but festering wounds ended up killing my interest. I gave it a chance in shadowlands s1 and by the time I got aotc I dropped it (and the dk class as a whole) for my good ole mage.

Its just more fun imo. The rotation is simpler but still engaging, the visuals are great, and no pet. I also just strongly dislike how unholy is currently designed, it feels like a mess to play and like I have to jump through 10 hoops just to do dmg, and wounds. Wounds is the most flawed class mechanic in this game, as long as it has wounds, I will never touch the spec.

I used to main frost tank in wrath, it was fun for pve. About wod i started unholy, and then only recently went to frost for dk, since legion really upset me without a 2h frost option. Just such an appealing spec with the lore imo.

I always loved the DK aesthetics, grew up playing wc3. But Im not a fan of chip damage profiles like UHs pet/dot rot play style, I like big bursty hits. I quit after wotlk and when I came back in legion I was really sad to see 2h Frost had been dropped. So I played MM hunter instead briefly then quit wow again and came back for SL when 2h had returned.
I love fDK currently. Bursty damage profile, amazing aesthetics, and blood as a tanking off spec.

Maybe I’m late to the party on this one. On this thread and many others folks really dont like Wounds. Can you give me a quick explanation as to the issue with it? Is it the mechanics as a whole?
I wish they rework with wounds like they done with BoS if they want to keeping it around for unholy. As I mentioned this before in other thread, if fester meant to be decay build why not add disease dot or combine outbreak within festerstrike
I think they will end up doing something to FW whether they remove it or completely change the way it works. I would choose the removal over a rework.
That being said, I don’t quite understand why people hate it so much. As if the spec’s identity depended on it. It doesn’t. At this point they are barely part of UHDK’s main source of damage. The only thing they are really good for is Festermight, and even Festermight could be reworked, like making it proc off RP instead of FW.

I swear they forced us into 1-h duel welding for that xpac because they didn’t want to give us Frostmourn even though it’s shattered. Paladins got Ashbringer and Shamens got Doom Hammer though.

Its the mechanic as a whole, popping the wounds themselves do very little dmg, the ability that puts them on the target is very weak but is very costly so it feels horrible to press, the wounds being tied to your target makes target swapping very costly and frustrating, especially when you have something like Apoc coming off CD right at the target swap, spreading them in aoe is very convoluted and felt horrible but is now so easy they may as well not exist. They have been slowly reducing the friction wounds have caused because people hated it so much, to the point now that wounds don’t really matter anymore except to build festermight stacks, which is the only reason you remotely care about them is in the first place at this point, festermight is the only thing that keeps them relevant.
TL:DR They are classic rogue combo points that only matter because of one insanely strong buff.

For real though, I am craving for something different for Unholy.
Wounds are just too parasitic for me to stay.
