Hello, I built my computer years back with help of a buddy with limited income
it’s quite dated by todays standards i have slight stuttering and poor performance the game doesn’t run smooth it isn’t horrible but definitely noticeable I play on “3” settings with Vertical Sync enabled, lower than 3 is ‘okay’ i don’t care for the graphics of WoW but I like to see spells I need to avoid in-game.
here’s my specs if someone could kindly check 'em out for me or suggest any upgrades if possible on my machine it would be a big help.
Processor
Intel(R) Core™ i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz Video Card
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB RAM
16 GB Operating System
Windows 10
Dat CPU tho… is a hair above the minimum requirements (i5-3450). You’ll definitely see an FPS improvement upgrading that, since the game leans more on the CPU. Though with that CPU, you’ll have to upgrade the board and RAM too if you want anything current-gen since it is using a discontinued socket and DDR3. Your 3770 is the best Core model you can get for that socket, outside of turning to the Xeon CPUs.
Intel’s 12th Gen CPU - AlderLake - is right around the corner and will support DDR5, so that will be your next upgrade.
Thanks for the and info!
Could you suggest a board that will support the 12th Gen CPU and DDR5 that’s good enough for WoW on high settings? I don’t have much interest in other games I just want to eventually run a 144hz monitor with WoW smooth enough to actually enjoy the game.
I upgraded to a 10700k because the 11700k isn’t much better, but I wish I’d dropped the extra $100 on the 11700k because my mobo requires an 11th generation intel CPU for the main m.2 slot to operate. So, I have 2 slots instead of 3.
Since the CPU has yet to come out, I can’t suggest anything specific but I’ve always leaned towards Asus boards; it’ll be one of their boards with the 600-series chipset, like the Z690.
He brings up a good point too - I didn’t think to ask. The read/write performance of your drive matters too when it comes to loading textures and whatnot, even more when you have tons of addons. As games bloat in size, having an SSD will matter.
You mention addons, i do use quite a lot of weakauras with ElvUI.
I can try removing some addons and weakaura’s to see if i notice a boost in performance.
I have a similar build to yours but get great performance in wow, the only difference is I have a 1070ti gpu and a gsync 144hz monitor. I play at graphics setting 7 and get pretty smooth consistent gameplay throughout the world (hovering around 80-90 fps) except when it comes to heavy encounters with lots of people and particle effects going on.
My point in saying all of this that perhaps it’s worth looking in to, to see what may be causing such low performance. You can run memory, cpu, and gpu test too see if any of those are faulty. Just my two cents.
Edit - Just wanted to add that after doing a quick search, it seems your gpu is likely whats cuasing such low performance. I don’t know if thats where the stuttering is coming from specifically, but it’s definitely effecting your fps. I know gpus are hard to come by now, but if you’re able to upgrade sometime in the future that I think would give you the biggest performance boost. Then you could just carry your new gpu over to a new build when you’re ready for it. Wasn’t planning on typing all of this but there you go lol.
I appreciate it I’m glad to know i’m not the only 1 with a similar build.
Your in-game settings are default “7”?
I can try to fix my settings I may have tweaked them that’s causing this issue…
That’s good to hear. As far as I understand the way vsync works is it matches the refresh rate of your monitor with the game you’re playing for smoother gameplay. So by default you should have been getting 60 fps as that’s the standard for monitors nowadays. I would double check your settings in the Nvidia control panel to make sure the refresh rate on your monitor is set at 60 just to make sure. It’ll be under Display / Change Resolution. You’ll see some options for changing your resolution and to the right of that a drop down window where you can choose your fresh rate.
One last thing I would do is check that your resolution scale in wow is set to 100% and not higher, as that can also drive your fps down. You’ll find that under the graphics setting under System. Hope this helps, and good luck on the loots!
Really at this point you’d probably need an upgrade on everything.
To upgrade the CPU would require a brand new Motherboard. If you have DDR4 already you can probably reuse the RAM, but you ideally want to get up to 32GBs.
Not sure what you have for a hard-drive, but NVMEs are pretty cheap these days, and faster than SSDs.
I have that same exact video card and I just got my new 3060 TI 12GB yesterday. I had to pay $100 over MSRP so good luck finding video cards.
