Old Raids only letting me do Heroic?

I just want to make sure that this is supposed to be how it is now.

I’m trying to do a Normal Heart of Fear to get some raid transmog items and I assigned myself Normal 10 on it.

But the raid is only letting me do Heroic 10/25 automatically. I know the older raids (WotLK and lower) are supposed to have combined the two, was Heart of Fear also made so that Heroic and Normal are the same modes now? And will I get normal gear from it still?

Heart of fear drops the same loot on all modes of heroic (10/25) and normal (10/25). So as long as it’s set on normal you’re all set

Well I am set on normal, but when I go into the raid, the raid says it’s Heroic. Will it still drop normal raid tier items?

That seems like a bug. I remember a similar thing months ago when I was farming ulduar. It wouldn’t let me select 10-player; the dropdown box said 10, but the raid instance login said 25.

Does yours tell you different?

My dropdown has me set on Normal 10 for raids and Normal for dungeons too.

I did read somewhere or was told that they combined them on some of the old raids, but I didn’t think that the combos applied to MoP raids yet. I did try it out, but all I got were non-tier items from the bosses so I couldn’t tell if it was only giving me heroic or not.

Ulduar is all sorts of broken because of the Timewalking version of it. There’s only one difficulty now. It doesn’t obey the legacy raid size setting, either in dungeon tuning or in loot. All bosses now drop a mix of both 10 and 25-man loot, roughly doubling the size of the loot pool for every boss. I’ve been farming it weekly since October on my priest, something like 22 clears, and still haven’t seen a drop of my priest’s 10-man shoulders to complete that xmog set.

As for Heart of Fear, I wouldn’t be surprised if the “base” difficulty for HoF was heroic. Remember that when HoF came out, there were only 3 difficulties: LFR, Normal, and Heroic. In Siege, they also added Flex as a difficulty, only available in Siege itself. At the start of WoD, they shifted all of the modes up one, so Flex became Normal, Normal became Heroic, and Heroic became Mythic. So the legacy setting of “Normal” in HoF would refer to what is now “Heroic” mode. At least, I suspect that’s what’s going on.

The easiest way to test it would be seeing if the first boss, Zor’lok, leaves copies of himself after he jumps platforms. If he does, it’s actual Heroic (what is now Mythic). If not, it’s what was originally Normal and is now considered Heroic mode.

I’ll try that next time thank you! I killed him too quickly.

I mean the skull is on the front of the raid so I wasn’t sure, but I will keep it in mind for next time!

Other things you can test that only occur on the original Heroic mode:

  • Blade Lord casts Blade Tempest, pulling you towards him while he spins around.
  • Garalon gains a “Damaged” buff at 33% that significantly increases his speed. He’ll also cast Crush periodically even if you don’t get too close to him.
  • Wind Lord casts additional adds when you kill the original ones, and gains the Recklessness debuff that dramatically increases his damage taken.
  • Amber-Shaper will spawn Amber Globules that fixate on you in the last phase.
  • Empress will cast Heart of Fear during the final phase.

Awesome! That will be great for other tmog things I still need to get, thank you!

Shortly before BFD came out I was farming old raids, mostly WoD and MoP raids. Something I didn’t know about MoP raids, because I started in legion:

In MoP you could do each boss on normal OR heroic each week, but not both. You could change the difficulty of the raid DURING the raid for each boss. I found the opposite problem: I’d set it to heroic but zoning in it was always on normal. Easy fix: once you are INSIDE the raid, change the difficulty if it’s not on the one you want.

Make sure you don’t start combat, as you have to wait 1 minute after combat to do this.

Heroic, OR normal, can be change per boss, each week. Can’t do both in the same week.
