Old model toggle

Classic wow got a HD toggle for Cataclysm. HD models wouldn’t exist until WoD, so that’s a big leap.

Can we have the old HD / Old model toggle return to retail with this in mind? One of the things I enjoy the most about classic is the old models & animations. It was removed in Legion which I got a blue reply on the alpha regarding, that it was intentional. But to say again, seeing that it’s back already on classic, can we have it again on retail please?

No. They took it away because they didn’t want to keep doubling their work by having to create new spell/ability animations for both model versions.

You don’t have to create new spell animations for old models that’s the beauty.

They’re perfectly fine with the race specific combo of Targeted / Omni & their melee variants.

I’d even argue they look better.

Correct, because animations changed during Legion on the new models and also DH animations, plus new spell animations.

That would be double work for two different rigs.

#bring back racial animations.

basically waht i want tbh. new animations are race wide. old animations are unique to body / race. way better

but as that’s not realistic, toggle please.

They also don’t want to have to take the development time to place/size/debug any new armor they make onto the old models. Try putting on the Broken Draenei costume toy while wearing any newer armor set and see what happens.

thats okay they never did so with the new models either as staves and shoulderpads etc are still clipping/floating

No, I don’t mean a small amount of jank like that. I’m talking about running around with an entirely untextured or colored model.

It astounds me how people want this game to take a lazy route and look like crap, but then whine that Blizz is lazy and stuff looks like crap.

if it looks like crap then just don’t turn on the old models, solved

Which is exactly what Blizzard did: removed the old ones because they look like crap and they’re not designing for old rigs.

Problem was already solved.

Go back to Classic.

GIVE ME TAUREN DH ALREADY

I think they’re pretty charming. But more important is how they move. The old casting animations / running animations / idle / pretty much everything has more charm & character than their modern counterparts. It helps that every race and both body types cast & melee attack differently, which still exists to some extent with the new models but it’s smothered by a bunch of carbon copied garbage that moves & looks the same regardless of who or what you’re playing. Really lame.

my main irk is the undead male casting animations. if they didn’t butcher that i could put up with pretty much anything. Undead female is virtually 1:1 untouched, but undead male is just awful. Something about the leg placement & the left arm. I can deal with the bouncy run & the awkward face animations.

another example would be pandaren warrior. I’m sure everyone has their preferences & most people who still play don’t care about these things. It’s a selection bias. But that’s why i’m posting about it on the slight chance that it carries over now that they’re introducing it to classic.

There’s much more effort put into the old animation system than the new one, that’s why they changed it over.

Every spell in the old system was a combination of Omni/Targeted casting rigging, with its unique spell particles. For example mind blast used to start as targeted but finished as omni. or Polymorph started as Omni but finished as targeted. Most were start as one finish as one but there was a variety. the important part here is that every single body type & race had a different style for omni & targeted. it created a varied & fun difference when you played a new character, even if it was the same class, that the variety in animations actually gave you a new experience.

I think creating those widely varied spells & animation rigs for each race & body type they introduced to the game was dramatically more time consuming than just copy pasting the universal rigging that is now shared between all races. It’s also probably why allied races are almost universally not new species but reskinned ones.

I’d be perfectly ok if they didn’t return old models if they put an equal or more effort into new ones, but they don’t. It’s the same animation across all races & body types for all the new spells. Regardless of how pretty the particle animations are it’s lazy and repetitive.

Paladins all read the same book the same way as they heal. All warlocks claw their chaos bolt out of the ground with the same struggled grasp. etc.

For what little variety there is the homogenous animation persists & dominates the classes.

Do better.

oh they removed them? good then you can understand why the thread exists in the first place. it literally won’t bother you at all to not turn them on, just like before. crazy concept.

As long as you don’t mind running around as an untextured, uncolored model XD

is the broken draenei the akama model? I don’t think that’s an accurate example of what happens to player races when you go back to old models as that’s not a player-race. It’s like trying to play as a vanilla ogre or naga or something and forcing it to wear armour textures.

I think the most dramatic example we would see is absurd clipping / invisible weapons.

all the models and armor that were in, in legion worked just fine. so i’d be fine with that trade, though i doubt everything is just suddenly uncolored and untextured (idk why it quoted you)
