Old Dungeons

You know i just spent an hour getting lost in Blackrock Depths because i forgot to click the wheel to open the next wing and I’m not even mad.
I miss how fun some of the older dungeons are in wow. We out level them so fast now I bet most people don’t ever know how many cool dungeons Wow has.
I wish we could Que for all dungeons at max level so we could go back and enjoy how fun they were.
Sure some were frustrating but at least I wouldn’t be forced to due the same dungeons over and over at max level.
Why cant Blizzard make ALL dungeons Timewalking so we could enjoy some of the stuff we have forgotten.

You already know the mega dungeons have been chopped in parts, so even if they were added it wouldn’t be the same experience from vanilla.

Also, be it level 10 or level 60, the tank is gonna super sonic through trash and whatever nostalgia you have for these places will look like a blur.

For me its not even the nostalgia about the older dungeons it more about how when a new expansion drops we do the same content over and over. Wow has so much content we just throw away and never do again at max level.

You have a playerbase that uses dungeons as leveling that has become the norm. Its just how it is.

I’ve been saying this for a while. I love the big old school dungeons. Even without some of the features in newer expansions they are far more interesting than new dungeons.

Dungeons these days are designed with Mythic + runs in mind, so they are incredibly linear and it is very clear that they have a formula they don’t stray from.

I know they aren’t for everybody, but I do wish they made dungeons like they used to. But they won’t.

“But why would they want to do old content that’s not even in the MDI?”

Wow isn’t about an RPG experience anymore. It’s not about an adventure anymore. It’s literally an endgame machine where you push and farm gear so you can push and farm gear for the next patch so you can push and farm gear for next patch…

If you’re going to say this garbage based solely on dungeon layout, wow hasn’t been “an RPG experience” since TBC.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they had dungeon completion stats for their vanilla dungeons and saw that the vast majority of those being run were the ones with very straightforward routes (Strat, UBRS, and DM North)…which also conveniently happened to be the ones with the best rewards. Which is why all the dungeons in TBC onward have also been fairly straightforward.

BRD is a dumpster fire. I feel pretty confident when I say most people who like BRD played WoW as their first MMO.

Most dungeons are fairly linear and in hubs because Scarlet Monastery was far and away the most popular dungeon in Vanilla by a large margin. It proved that this was what dungeons should be.

Optional bosses were a constant source of drama in Vanilla and are simply not something that should exist for the most part. Eliminating that aspect and streamlining the dungeons has simply been a good thing for players.

The new version of mega-dungeons are sort of a “best of both worlds” approach as well - you get the size and scope of some of these older dungeons that people hold nostalgia for, while also getting the advantages of more modern game design.

Oh trust me, it’s not only about dungeon layout lol.

I had a fun getting lost in brd a couple of years ago leveling a warrior. It was a lot of fun. The catch though is that it required me to have not been there for 10+ years so I had forgotten everything. No way I could have had the same or similar experience if I were to do it again the next week.

BRD is cool the first time for sure but go ahead and farm that place for the stupid trinket off the emperor and tell me how great it is

But…

People do them once and then not again until they are broken up into segments. The only reason people repeat them is if there is a mount involved.

I will be honest with you, i feel like classic wow and the original 1-60 overworld that came with it, was the only real reason i played classic wow. I love retail wow, and there were alot of other differences between classic wow and current, all mana classes, dps healing and tanking used mana instead of an alternate source of power for example, and how healers are the only ones that need to worry about mana and health now. Classes became homegenized and stripped of alot of major abilities over the years. The ease of the overworld and leveling grind in retail is pretty insane, to the point where like 2 or 3 people can run a lowbie dungeon while the rest afk. I still found it trifle difficult to run a dungeon in classic up to wrath even if one person was afk in a dungeon. We have that bonus boss counter now so in BRD especially, most of the dungeon is skipped anyway, which is pointless to me. I rarely eat anything while leveling up now for health regen, because i nmever really have to in retail. I miss hybrid speciliazations as well. That is the only real thing i miss about the old talent trees. I do not miss the talents themselves, but just the fact that you could go down a couple of different roads between 2 separate trees.

I mean there is a bunch of other stuff, but for me, i would like retail more if i could at least choose to be able to level up through chromie time in the classic wow 1-60 zones, dungeons and quests. That would be awesome. Then my monk and my demon hunter could experience the original barrens and original orgrimmar, original deadmines, original shadowfang keep with the worgens and arugal, etc. The cataclysm revamp was awesome to, but it stunk having to give up so much. It is in a desperate need of a comeback for retail wow, as that is one of the biggest differences between retail wow and classic, plus the harder difficulty overall of classic vs’ retail and the adversity, but everything regardless would become trivial anyway due to the advent of the internet, which was not how classic wow was designed. But still, i know everything about wow, and most people would pick it up really quick, because you can just look it up in 9 seconds, same with any other game. But for me, when i level, in retail, i would love to be able to choose the old 1-60 overworld. That would be so cool. And maybe here and there i change my chromie time to warlord’s of draenor and the cataclysm of the barrens if i want to. So much more choice we are missing out on in retail. Classic wow has the nostalgia, which is cool. But i also like retail, with new content being added every so often. I choose to level and grind bosses at end game out slowly as well. I just have more fun that way, but the internet has changed things, which is fine. I mean, a bunch of peeps leveled to the cap in shadowlands in 3 hours in shadowlands launch. That is insane. I can only imagine goin from lvl 60 to 70 in Burning crusade launch in 2007 in like 2 hours.

Also, i do realize classic wow preserves the old overworld, for those who are going to tell me that. Would be nice to have it in retail as well. Would be fun to level through from time to time. Retail has become pretty non linear as to how to advance the levels. I feel like it makes sense though, as more and more stuff is being added. So now blizz can balance everything in the game around 60 levels, which is sweet. I mean, we just do not play wow the same way we used to, back when we were noobs for quite a bit longer. But it would be nice to be able to zerg through classic wow 1-60 content through chromie time if i want to, just like i am able to zerg through everything else.

I also remember BRD requiring some keys and a few other things to unlock the whole dungeon. So it was undeniably more involved back then. But it would be nice to have a version of retail where the overall game was more involved as an option.

As much as I love the earlier dungeons, especially Vanilla ones (Sunken Temple is my favorite of all time), they just wouldn’t fit really well in today’s speedrun everything meta.

exploring was a big part of the game since everything was so new - so those mega dungeons felt like a big piece of our fantasy…but now, i think players would just complain that they’re too long/tedious.

I feel like that’s why Classic WoW will always have a purpose (for when many of us are just feeling nostalgic, and want a taste - it feels more natural when you play that game…but I prefer the modern dungeon design when I’m on this character (Not happy with all the SL dungeons, but up to BfA was great).

I think they lost their touch with Mega-dungeons

From my perspective though, i mean, if they added that stuff back as an option for chromie time, i do feel like enough people would join in and keep going. And some would jump in to see what the fuss was about and leave and never choose classic wow 1-60 for chromie time again. I do feel like there is enough of a market for it in retail. Heck, alot of people i have played with, only played classic for the old overworld. It is classic and nostalgic. I think having that community comeback in retail would not be a bad step forward. The class quests, for example, could be added back in. But instead of you actually needing to do them, they would be optional. I remember feeling bad for this new player. He asked me where i got my whirlwind axe and gauntlets of divinity. I told him those two items were deleted from the game. I mean, i think for transmoggers alone it would be worth it. None of that content was even legacy content either. I had gauntlets on every mail wearing toon leveling up. I had fenrus hide on all toons. etc. So that would not be an issue.

To me, at least, even if chromie time classic wow 1-60 becomes the most unpopular chromie time option, i feel like it would still be nice to have it as an option. I also understand classic wow has this overworld , but i would rather be going forward, trying to find the best mix of both crowds as possible. I mean, for those who liked wrath of the lich king, the way it played, the class designs, the story, the end game, the nostalgia. They have that version. On top of those many things being very different in retail, the other main difference is the lack of the old classic 1-60 overworld. Those types of things are the 2 main differences between retail and classic.

I am just out of curiosity, what is the least popular chromie time option available?

It just seems wierd that we can choose any version of the game that we wish in retail for leveling, burning crusade content for example, but not classic wow 1-60 content. I mean, you have classic wow, but some of us want to experience classic wow in retail. I am sure i will give wrath a shot when it launches, but i definitely feel like the classic wow 1-60 as an option for retail would add alot of replayability back to retail. All versions of wow have their place if you ask me. But i guess i might have to accept that the only way i am going to have the best of both worlds is to play all my main toons on classic wrath servers. Then play my pandaren monk, b elf demon hunter, and my tauren warrior from 2006 in retail. Because, to me at least, there would be no point to my other toons in retail anymore. I have every toon available to me in classic wrath, minus some character toon class combos as well. Such as pandaren and goblins not existing as playable yet.

That is all i got. Another thing i miss is those random chests full of silver bars, linen cloth, bolts of silk, copper ore, just random junk, that used to spawn all over the overworld. Idk why, but i swear i just play retail exactly how i played in wrath. Wrath was like the best version of the game to me. Again, alot has changed since then. I liked the class design and overall gameplay better. I liked the story also, but i mean if the gameplay and class design isn’t as fun, and the overworld i choose is not an option, i cannot get into the story as much. I guess what i am saying is the classes in general in retail and alot of things in retail are still fun. Not as fun, but i am willing to bite the bullet on that one more or less. But the old overworld would make a huge difference in how you experience retail for leveling. It would add an old dynamic to the retail game. One that does not currently exist anymore. I would choose classic wow 1-60 chromie time. I am sure alot of others would as well. But i do not feel like it should not be included in retail just because of lack of popularity. That was another reason why wrath was so good. It had all the major assets that attracted the most diverse player groups. In my op, blizzard is blocking those groups from retail. I think alot of people would come back to retail, even though the modern game is a bit different ways, bit the old overworld was a huge part of it. I do not feel like cataclysm would have been as badly received as it was if blizz incorporated the classic 1-60 overworld somehow. Heck, chromie time is probably one of the best ideas blizzard has had for retail if you ask me. But it could be so much more. I rarely complain about wow, but the classic wow overworld is one of the biggest things in retail that is missing.

That doesn’t fit into the mythic + set up now a days. I mean people got karazhan dungeon destroyed bc it was “ too long” they got the newer one wrecked bc “ wah wahh it was too long. Dungeons like BRD will never happen In this game unfortunately

I also feel like people forget the good things that retail has done over the years. The cross realm mount and pet system for example. That will be annoying in wrath classic having to collect the black war bear, for example, on every toon that i want it on.

Warlord’s of draenor added the cross realm toy box system, which was a good feature. All those random knick nacks that pretty much had random on use functions, no longer took on bag space, and you could use on whoever whenever you wanted.

I feel like something interesting for retail that blizz could add, would be the ability to turn the GPS systems for quest markers and such off. That way, players like myself would not be playing on autopilot, which would make it more fun for me. But i understand why it exists. It is the same reason classic wow players use questie. It does the same thing. But for classic wow.

With retail, we have so much phasing, and time warping, and overlapping story insistencies now and incontinuities. I treat wow like a comic book series when it comes to the story now. The story is all over the place, and does not always make sense. And, often times, the story has continuity errors, but i expect that. The story is still good, but story isn’t everything to me. The journey to max level for some players is key. The end game for others is key. They do not care about leveling up. Some care about both those elements. Some care about pvp more than anything. I like all three aspects.

While i do not feel like a super mega Blackrock depths style dungeon would come around in a major patch in shadowlands for example, it would be nice to have the old dungeons and the old overworld back in retail for leveling purposes at least. Except for the original Naxxramas or Onyxias lair. Those two dungeons were gone for a long time. Most people did not even clear them back then. I would say if the old overworld comes back to retail for chromie time, just base it on patch 3.3.5, the last major patch of wrath of the lich king. More options for leveling in retail would blow me away.

I also feel like it would be cool to add extra cosmetics to retail. No need to bring quivers and ammo back, for example. But bring the arrow and quiver cosmetics back. I know we have quiver cape transmogs off sylvanas, but it would be nice to have an option for casual shenanigans. I remember the nerubian reinforced quiver in wrath of the lich king looked amazing. As well as a few of the boring models from the lower lvls of the game.

Having the ability to add an icy or fiery effect to your arrows as a hunter would also be pretty cool. Just sayin. There are a couple of bows that do this, and add a chance on attack to make your arrows flame or ice when fired. But i remember in wrath you could buy iceblade arrows, which would give a permanent ice glow effect when shot. Was such a bummer to lose it.

Or some librams transmog options for paladins. That would be cool as well.

When it comes to the mega dungeons in this game op, I feel like the Tower of Torghast was as close as we got to it as far as end game goes. Pretty large dungeon, and i loved it. Could do it solo. Could do it with 6 friends. Either way, i do not remember it being well received. And unfortunately, if something is not well received. I mean, idk. I am just hoping blizzard takes a chance here and there. The classic wow 1-60 overworld, while a bit taboo to the retail game, i think it would be an awesome edition. I mean, my pandaren monk can go to any part of northrend or outland with all the quests and junk there. But he cannot go to classic wow 1-60. It just is so frustrating. I might never get the chance to pummel mr. smite or the worgens in shadowfang keep with fists of fury. But maybe some day, blizz will turn the cards around.

Experimentation is what i remember of blizzard. I would not be opposed to anything so far i have mentioned. Or a large mega dungeon at end game. I mean, the retail game has so much potential to be really good again. Blizzard just has to take a shot at it.

As much as i loved vanilla bc big dungeons I don’t want that back again. Xp per hour matters slow big dungeons don’t raise it
