I need to get the Krastinov’s Bag of Horrors toy in order to access Old Scholomance. It appears, however, that someone who already HAS the toy has to be there with you in order for you to see Eva Sarkhoff to start a questline to get him (Dr Krastinov who drops the toy) to appear.
Why on earth would they make something like that that forces you to rely on someone else who has already done it (how did the first person to get the toy get it???)
Any suggestions since it’s gonna be a PITA (a) to find someone with the toy and (b) someone who is in the area and willing to help?

Yes, interacting with Eva Sarkhoff is necessary to make Doctor Theolen Krastinov appear in the Scholomance dungeon. You must exhaust all of Eva Sarkhoff’s dialogue to initiate the quest that leads to Krastinov’s appearance. Krastinov is a rare spawn in the Heroic version of Scholomance, replacing a trash pack after Rattlegore is killed.
I tried to farm this on heroic a year ago and never did get the toy to drop, though I did get the boss to spawn.
My understanding was that you could solo it, but like you said, need to finish convo with Eva Sarkhoff. I don’t know that someone with the toy already had to be present?

I don’t know, either… it’s ridiculous that you can’t get him to spawn solo. Without him, you can’t get the toy and I edited my comment to show where it says someone with the toy has to be present to see Eva…
You can but it’s RNG, you just need to go there daily and if you hear “the doctor is in” after you kill Rattlegore, you can kill him and the toy should drop.
One of my guildmasters did the whole thing and has the recipes, but I kind of hate to pester him for a run with his toy. But the good thing is that once it’s done, I think the key permanently unlocks and you never have to worry about the toy again.
It’s a very convoluted process that I may try again at end of xpac.
Yes, you don’t need anyone else there. Krastinov is just a rare that has a chance to spawn after you kill Rattlegore. If I recall it took me about 15 runs of H Scholo before he finally spawned so it can take a while.
The workaround for farming it yourself is to have someone else in your group that already has the toy, to get Eva to appear. But you don’t use the questline to get Krastinov to appear, you have it backwards.
i did it ez go heroic scholomance and kill the rare after rattlegore if if u hear doctor is in but let the rare hit you a few times , doesnt need to dmg you just hit you and then kill it
I’ll keep giving it a shot but this contradicts everything I’ve read. I’ve never seen the npc’s standing outside the instance, heard Eva’s story and I’ve never seen this boss in the zillions of times I’ve run Scholomance.
As you asked in your initial post, it wouldn’t make sense that the toy was required in order for him to spawn, because in that case he’d be the only source of the toy needed to make him spawn. He just seems to be a fairly rare spawn, but he should show up eventually.
Oh, I totally agree, but everything I’ve read says you have to talk to Eva Sarkhoff for him to appear… and it appears the toy is necessary for her to appear… it’s all so confusing. It’s like a catch-22.
Yeah, whoever believes that may be well-intentioned and attempting to help others, but they didn’t stop to think how paradoxical what they’re suggesting is. Nobody would have the toy if the toy was needed to get the toy.
There are a LOT of steps to this whole unlocking old Scholomance thing. Some tips say wait for the Doctor’s dialogue to fully run before attacking, do not let a pet run ahead to attack, etc.
The part about a friend having the toy-- this comes later in the process, in order to spawn Eva and the questline, the toy needs to be used. The toy isn’t used to spawn another toy–it’s used later to spawn Eva to start the questline to unlock old Scholo. So the whole toy/Doctor thing can be skipped if you have someone in your party to start that questline.
The problem with the wowhead instructions is they start with using the toy next to the bag of bones, when most players don’t even have the toy, and have a hard time getting it.
The advice I’ve seen is to keep farming the Doctor in heroic, don’t have a pet enabled, let him attack you first, and wait for all dialogue to be spoken.
I’m having a decent chuckle because I had forgotten that being able to unlock old Scholo and farm removed mogs was literally why I resubbed a while back. I didn’t have the toy after playing MoP as current content but it dropped on my first attempt this time.
