During the Windows XP days Blizzard created a Desktop Theme for the WinXP OS. While customizing my desktop I remembered it and how much I loved it. Which got me wondering what ever happened to it? And with the 15th Anniversary coming back up I was thinking that we should bring back the Official World of Warcraft Desktop Theme made by Blizzard.
I support this idea.
That’s a neat idea, but unfortunately Microsoft stripped the majority of its theming engine out in Windows 8 and in Windows 10 the situation isn’t much better – where WinXP allowed themes to customize basically everything on screen, without third party mods Windows 10 supports only basic color changes. So sadly, a 15th anniversary theme wouldn’t be much more than a desktop picture.
This is no longer true, and I’m not sure if it was ever true for windows 10.
Themes can now change file/folder icons, change the way the cursor looks, and much more. You can make your whole computer look like you’re playing WoW. There are a couple world of warcraft themes out there that do this but I haven’t found any recent ones that include newer expansion stuff.
if anyone knows of a really good one, let me know.
Interesting, last time I tried theming Windows 10 the result was a bit disastrous. It looks like the standard Windows 10 theme pretending to be whatever I themed it as, really bad compared to XP and 7 themes.
I’m curious though, how did you find such an old thread? Google?
Yes, I was googling for windows themes. I ended up downloading custom WoW cursors. They were made by taking icons from the game files. So I can make the loading cursor and make it look like the engineering gear icon, I can put the default cursor as the gauntlet, and lots of others.
I couldn’t find any decent themes that did all of that. But I have found random themes that change how everything looks: folders, cursors, task bar, wallpaper, lockscreen, etc.
