Okay, first let’s get this out of the way, I am not teykng to say FF is better. But one thing that may have been cool in WOW is if one character Could eventually level all classes to 70 (or max whatever). Some gear would crossover but the Best thing would be all the currency and boa crafting mats being so much more useful.
The flaw with FFXIV’s character system is that all classes are tied to a single character. Meaning that you’re saying with a straight face that your kawaii uguu cat girl is also an edgy dark knight. Or that your edgy boy Au’ra is actually a white mage. If you asked me point blank I’d say the choice was made to make the sale of phantasia vials more appealing. Or at least that was a happy accident for it.
The solution to WoW’s class system was always better application of account-wide achievements and reputations.
Not sure I agree.
One thing FF sucks at is immersion. It’s a great story, but I don’t really feel like I’m in it. I’m seeing it from the perspective of this “Warrior of Light” who makes no sense on so many levels. Example: my armor-clad Warrior with a massive axe suddenly picks up a staff and then forgets how to wear armor. Or I take off an armor and put on a shirt, suddenly I don’t know how to use anything but a wand. It’s very gamey and makes no sense.
Whereas Barrison is a priest. Yes, there’s some flexibility on what kind of priest he is at any given moment… but he’s never going to forget he’s a priest. He has his strengths and his limitations. It just feels more like I’ve chosen my avatar for WoW, have decided there’s things I can do and things I can’t… and it lets me feel more immersed.
If I want to experience another side of WoW, I can re-immerse myself in another character.
That said, WoW can definately take lessons from FFXIV: a lot more of the cosmetics or rep rewards should be account-wide, so I don’t have to feel like I need to get Renown 30 on all my alts too.
Better? IMO yes, but not possible as we’re in too deep now. At least now they’re making a moderate effort in improving alt gearing. Not perfect and many things should certainly be marked as BoA (cough primal chaos), but it’s something.
As someone who plays both I disagree with wow adopting FF14 unique job system. Wow’s system works fine since it’s more heavily based around the races and war. Unlike ff14. “factions”
Whatever people say this was originally a game about war rather you agree or not that is it’s establishment and what made it popular.
I play FF as well, and I only level jobs that feel right for that character. Like I have one character that is a bard / summoner. Another that is all the mage classes (except blue), and another that is dragoon / reaper. You don’t HAVE to level all classes with a single character, you just CAN.
Having to replay the main story quest is still an onerous task. Especially if you don’t actually like the story that much, or don’t feel like replaying it.
Like, if FFXIV wanted to take a page from WoW, let me skip MSQ quests on characters if my account already completed those MSQ’s for another character.
I’m on the fence. On one hand it’s nice. On the other it comes with drawbacks.
Namely loot drawbacks. You could technically level another character for all that, but you’re in the same position.
The biggest issue with the FF job system vs WoW’s class system, is that while you wouldn’t “have” to level the classes on a single character, the state of the community would “expect” you to do so, and expect “any” player at “any” time to swap roles simply because they draw the short straw. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like tanking or healing that day, too bad, you’ve been selected, leave the group or do what ‘we’ expect you to do. Don’t get me wrong, most players would respect another’s choice of what class they’re playing, but it’s not a system that would work well for WoW. Just look at single spec vs dual spec vs any spec changes as they’ve happened over the years… sure, you still see people playing a shadowpriest or an arms warrior, etc, but when “nobody else is around” it’ll be the first person they dump if they need the slot for a different role… after all, they can’t expect a hunter, mage or warlock to magically become a healer or a tank… and in turn if you say “well I don’t have -class/job- levelled” then you’ll be dumped just the same
I like the ability to swap and level all of the jobs on one character. But their main strength compared to WoWs is that you can be all of the professions on the same character.
Other than that, it’s simply flavor.
Very good point for people who don’t want to play everything, and selfishly I didn’t consider them. I was just thinking for the past 3??? Expansions I’ve ended with every class at max level and being able to just go into the next expansion of picking a main would be nice.
In regards to the feel of it I didn’t consider that either. My gnome mage Buttercup may not feel right as a Blood DK.
no thank you.
i greatly enjoy having many alts
I would LOVE it. My one character doing everything has been amazing in FF14.
I think the FF XIV system is better but it isn’t a deal breaker that it isn’t that way. The benefit is the closet space of multiple specs is kind of bad to manage.
Why are so many people trying to make WoW into some other game?
My ultimate wow dream is to be able to switch to any class and spec on one char. So tired of having alt-itis.
It’s nice but inventory management is a pain. If you get sidetracked and try to level different jobs/classes at the same time you end up with multiple sets of gear that you can upgrade every 10 levels with the game currency for gear which are tomes. Add the gear from crafting classes and it gets to be a mess.
nothing looks more badass than a cute kitty uwu in full gothic dark knight gear with a giant greatsword
The games are too different.
It’s already a hassle managing gear sets for multiple specs and talent builds, and then you’d just suffer from weekly lockouts anyways.
No, it’s a bad thing. I don’t want to have everything tied to one character. What if I am a healer and I go by the name of BigbadWarrior?
