Obtaining Rank 3 Essences on Alts

You still have to play the game, everyone wants all the power but put no effort in.

I mean you want to play alts? This isn’t grinding, this is what your alts would be doing anyway.

I’m not seeing that 100k honor achieve in your account. In fact, you have reached only honor level 16. Too much effort for you?

I think the point is that if this system hadn’t been added, our alts would still be grinding for essences. We’d just be doing it in specific ways to get the particular Essence and rank we wanted. So there is actually no difference at all between how it is now and how it will be tomorrow, except for where the access to those essences comes from. And there is also the fact that many people will still need to work on Essences the old fashioned way because their main will not have ones they need at Rank 3 (or at all, if its say a healer one and the main is a tank or whatever).

Its a weird way of making it seem like we are getting something handed to us because we asked for it when it’s not really what we asked for at all.

at least its grinding current content that you should want to do anyways

I guess its a better way of looking at it. (since its better than grinding 8.2 stuff)

you ARE getting something handed to you if you play that alt. if you don’t play that alt, why do you care about rank 3 essences?

Except you’re instead getting it from gearing and playing your alt in current content, which to me seems like what I want do on my alts. It’s not skipping the effort, but it does let you kill two birds with one stone, and means you don’t need to do nazjatar or mechagon which would otherwise provide nothing except essences.

lol thanks but no thanks

Those resource rates look pretty reasonable for the acquisition and the potential number of essences people could want, great stuff.

Any news on access to things like PvP essences for players moving from a character with a single role to one with multiple?
From what I’ve heard unlocking Blood of the Enemy for say a Paladin apparently grants all 3 role essences (and thus their account-wide availability), however doing the same on a class like Rogue with a single spec will only unlock the dps one and alts would have to still unlock ranks for the healing and tank roles.

It’s kind of a bit one sided and through no real choice or foresight that the player could have had, shouldn’t these essences allow the account-wide availability even if the initial class couldn’t use them?

Great to see such an well constructed view of how the issue was being looked at from the development side. These small posts are honestly so important to us as players for being invested in the game and it’s development.

We appreciate the time you take into bringing this light to the community and would love to see more of it in the future, especially with the release of Shadowlands.

I believe more open communication (not direct conversation but just insights into the teams mindset and decision making) would go a long way towards mending the current concerns players have with the direction of the game and building the relationship that players have with the company.

When it comes to being right or wrong most of us are more interested in why the decision was made as it creates understanding. We get that everyone is human and sometimes we all make mistakes, but knowing why they were done let’s us say “Yeah I get that”, as well as giving yourselves a record of why you made certain changes or decisions which you can refer back to later on so you tell what is successful and why.

TL:DR :
Bit of a long post but thanks for the insight, currency acquisition looks reasonable. Would be great to see more posts about the thought process going into development especially with the eventual release of Shadowlands.

I think they go along way to building rapport between the devs and the players.

sorry this wasn’t enough for you

Wait and see til tomorrow but I’d hope it’s done on the achievement and not having bought the essence.

I don’t know about universally hated… I would prefer to run Islands over warfronts any day of the week, hands down (especially on an alt), and I’m not alone in that sentiment. And I wasn’t referring to the efficiency of levelling the neck, I’m just talking from the perspective of doing content people like. Totally understand others not enjoying islands, that’s fine. But I thought the point of the echos was to tie it multiple forms of content, so it seemed interesting to not include it in islands, too.

No I’m not. I don’t get how people don’t understand what I’m saying.

Let me see if I can simplify it.

The Change
Main has Rank 3 of X Essence.
Alt would like that Rank 3.
Alt does the appropriate activity to get that Rank 3.

How it is Now
Alt would like Rank 3 of Essence.
Alt does the appropriate activity to get that Rank 3.

The only difference is that another toon has the Rank 3. And if they don’t have one the Alt needs, they still need to go back to 8.2 activities to get it.

And of course the main, having all the Rank 3s it needs, has zero use at all for the currency. How hard would it have been to allow them to send it to that alt to use for their own Rank 3?

Assuming, as I said, that at least one of your toons has a Rank 3 you need or can use.

I’m not tryng to be the Grinch here. I just get a bit frustrated that so many people take what is offered without being prepared to consider how it could have been done better, and how saying anything that isn’t praising the move gets you dumped on.

Oh, and I’d better not see a reduction in the current droprates of any of the existing currencies, relics, gear, or grey items to accommodate this new coinage.

I hear what your saying, as I ground out the EP essences on a DPS only character. So my tank alt will still have to go back to EP to grind out the tanking essence.

A bit of a bummer to me, but whatever, most of the essences I can still pass to my tank from my Hunter.

As long as role specific essences are judged based on having done the content, not specifically having the role available (Hunters blood of the enemy as an example) then it should work fine.

Given I don’t know that’s how it works I’m not going to negatively speculate until it’s live. But if it turns out it’s locked to what you already own, not what you potentially could have owned on multiple roles, then you bet I’ll be right there with you wanting better.

Except it is completely different than how it was. You get a rank 3 in a week for doing the most basic of things, emissaries and 2 assaults. Previously what rank 3 where you getting in a week? If you actively play the game you can get multiple rank 3s a week.

Pretty reasonable.

Without factoring in the spammable methods (arenas, M+, etc)

275 from Invasions (1x Major, 2x Minor).
350 from Emissaries (7x 50)

That right there is a guaranteed one per week doing nothing but dailies.

But if you do a singular 15 per week, you get the 300 from the Cache and 45 from clearing the actual dungeon. In combination with Dailies, you’re up to 2 per week.

Doing LFR nets you 100 at 25 per wing, doing 12/12 on either Normal or Heroic gets you between 180-240.

And doing Visions nets you 150 for a 5 chest, if you need to do 8 hard zones next week, you can comfortably expect 600 echoes from that, even if you do zero masks.

Combined with PvP sources (min 10 per Arena win, min 175 from PvP Cache), as well as spamming M+ (+10’s give 30 per clear), it’s pretty reasonable to get 4 essences in a single week, even if you have to grind for it.

2-3 Essences will be pretty reasonable for anyone who actively PvP’s or does M+ on an alt.

And if you care about literally nothing else, you can still get an essence per week simply by doing dailies and ignoring your cloak.

This reminds me of the NBA where the league has shut down due to Corona Virus restrictions on public gatherings.

So one team owner Mark Cuban said “were going to pay stadium employees during this lay off” and he received alot congratulations and good will for that statement, he later amended it by saying “they’ll have to do some type of community service to get that pay” and it caused alot of anger.

The Idea is that Charity is supposed to be… Charitable the Red Cross doesn’t demand those people receiving free clothes, food and shelter do Charity work to get it, they simply are in need so they get helped out no strings attached.

now back to the NBA, later an NBA player Kevin Love said “my wife and I are going to donate 100,000$ to the stadium workers of the cleveland Cavaliers” no strings attached, no need to do charity work to get it. The people need help so hes just going to help.

Blizzard said they learned from there mistakes… well they clearly didnt learn from the mistake they made about the legendary cape on alts just a few weeks ago, where they made a post emploring players “please go get your cape”. Because no one wants to do all that stuff just to get a cape on alts that require another vision grind and essence grind. they clearly have the metrics to see people werent doing it hence why the made the “please go get your cape thread”.

Blizzard… sometimes you dont need to add a carrot to everything you implement, its ok that people can feel “complete” on there mains/alts and choose to go outside or play another game and take a break especially during the last patch hiatus of an expansion. Take the advice from your own Tips you put during load screens “everything is ok in moderation, enjoy your time in Warcraft but dont forget to go outside and play with friends” well for Blizzard i would say “sometimes its ok to just give people what they ask no strings attached, sure they might quit if they feel “complete” but its better they quit satisfied then out of frustration”.
