OBR Technical Feedback

This thread isn’t about whether or not the OBR should exist, or how strongly it should perform. It’s about giving feedback on how it works, through the PoV of how it’s intended to work.

I did some tests and I found two flaws in the OBR as a Destruction Warlock:

Immolate (and probably other DoTs) is cast twice in a row for no reason.

  • Cause: I believe that’s caused because DoT takes a bit of time to appear on the enemy, and the OBR sees that the enemy doesn’t have Immolate so it tries to apply Immolate.
  • Solution: Reduce priority of Immolate for the duration of the GCD after successfully casting Immolate.

AoE Spells that target a place instead of an enemy (like Cataclysm and Rain of Fire) have reduced range in the OBR. Attempting to cast them at max range outputs nothing and stops the whole rotation from being cast.

  • Cause: While these spells have a max range of 40yds (same as my other spells), I believe those 40yds end at the edge of the spell area, not at the center. The OBR is trying to cast the spell centered at the target’s location.
  • Solution: If the enemy is outside the range of the spell, cast it in the furthest point in a straight line between the caster and the target.

While both these issues can be easily avoided by understanding the cause and adjusting accordingly (waiting a bit before pressing the button again after casting immolate, don’t stand at max range for Cataclysm/RoF), I believe requiring such workarounds from the player goes against the design goals of the OBR.

Solution. Make all other dots like flame shock, which has a decent CD. Can’t be told to cast back to back now.
