Nvidia driver reset when switching windows off wow

Kind of a strange issue that only started occuring after 11.x launched - often when I’m playing the game I’ll click over on slack or discord or youtube and then back on the game. After the game has been running for a while when clicking back on the game it will freeze (for about 30-40 seconds) and the screen will blink it and it will be playable again.

This is an Asus Z-690P, DDR 4 (128 gigs of ram), Intel I7-12700K and Nvidia 4080 Super - its installed in a large tower and the gpu runs about 50 deg C with the game running. Driver version 565.90 (latest one), Windows 11 ent 22631.4249 (fully patched).

Also note that this is the only game this happens in.

The only error I see is in the event viewer for nvlddmkm:

The description for Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 100

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

The error means the GPU stopped taking commands from Windows, and the behavior is the driver for the GPU rebooting. By any chance, does your monitor require its own drivers?

I figured it out - I think it’s an actual bug, but if you have Max Background FPS unchecked - when you click into another window and then back - about 50% of the time it causes the gpu to reset.

If you set it to 30 fps it lets you switch windows all day long no problem.
