Now, That's Not Fair!

This is funny. No one told me about this, and I’m surprised when Shadowlands came out that the Pet Battlers didn’t erupt in protest. Or perhaps we did and I missed it.

I was in the Maw, collecting pets. I think there’s only four wild-caught pets: Missing Limb, Clinging Remains, Eye of Affliction and the Scurrying Mawrat.

But anyhow, this was during the time when the swirlie things were on the ground to warn us of an approaching bomb. I knew from experience that when those bombs strike me, I’ve got five chains appearing on me, shacking me to the ground. Worse, they leech health, so unless I get them off me, I’m going to die.

But I figured there was no problem, since I was in the sanctuary of a pet battle, safe from the notice of any hostile mobs. No such luck. I emerged from the Pet Battle to find about 20 of those chains shackling me. And I think I lasted about a second before I dropped dead.

This is the first time I’ve seen anything that can hurt me when I’m pet battling. That was actually pretty funny.

That never happened to me, but it is funny.

Also

Deathroach
Vile Deathroach
which I remember as being everywhere, and
Grip of Terror
which I remember having to camp for, and still didn’t get a H/P of. Means I might have to go back some day. I HATE that place. :frowning:

The Paraxis in the Antoran Wastes will also kill you while pet battling if you’re in level range for it to hit you.

There are eight wild pets in The Maw: Vile Deathroach, Mawtouched Geomental, Scurrying Mawrat, Grip of Terror, Deathroach, Clinging Remains, Lost Limb, and Eye of Affliction.

Thank you. There are still areas of the Maw that I haven’t explored yet. I think I did get one of those roaches now that you mention it.

Congratulations, only 19.5% of players on Xu-Fu have that one, which makes it the rarest of the wild pets from Shadowlands.

My recollection is that the Mawtouched Geomental is actually in Zereth Mortis, just that you need a drop from the Maw’s Korthia zone to be able to see and capture it.

No, you’re right, it’s from the “Questionable Mawshrooms” quest. I’ve been working on a spreadsheet for all the pets I still have to collect and apparently I need a break.

Do not forget Golden Eye. Naturally, very low drop rate from a low population elite mob with a average 2-6 min spawn rate in a crowded zone with almost nothing but elite mobs. Time, Patience and Luck required.

Definitely something to try for, at least. I’ll be on the lookout for it, once I level up my Hunter and get some better gear. But just to point out, we were discussing wild-caught pets. Since this is a drop from an elite mob, we wouldn’t have otherwise mentioned it.

Suggestion: look a the comments section to for a few hints and to see what you are getting yourself into lol. While the sample base has diminished over time, on WarcraftPets, only 0.6% of the community there has this pet (ranks 42 out of 1751 pets). I do not know if this is across all accounts or only the active ones (accessed in last 30 days) that the website displays normal info for.

That’s not so bad.
One time, I was pvp pet battling in Stranglethorn Vale (I think) on my horde lock. The backdrop for the pet battle turned out to be outside Stormwind. I started the battle and my felguard aggro’d the Stormwind guards outside the gates. They hacked away at the felguard and I was slowly getting killed through my soul link. I could not exit the pet battle and died.
oh well, right? I rez where I was questing, consulted my map and discovered that my body was far up north, sitting right outside of Stormwind. I tried to take rez sickness, but gave me some kind of error like “can’t do that right now” or some such, I can’t remember exactly.
So I had no choice but to hoof it all the way to stormwind to collect my body. it took forever.
You should be immune to any damage when pet battling, but programming accidents happen and chaos ensues.

You know, the more I play in the Maw, the more I agree with you. I just discovered the debuff, Immediate Extermination. I asked how I get this stuff off me, and someone told me some B.S. about how you have to defeat the Eye raid boss.

Except that I wasn’t in a raid.

I let it kill me, thinking that would take it off, but no such luck.

So, I checked on reddit to see if anyone addressed this issue, and it’s just basically something you can’t get rid of until the next day when the dailies are reset.

So, basically, the Devs decided to restrict your time in the Maw, because if you spend (what they judge) to be too much time in the Maw, they will simply make sure you can’t. And I’m thoroughly disgusted with it. That is too micromanaging. It’s too controlling. It’s literally nothing they need to concern themselves with. If I choose to level up to 70, doing nothing but playing in the Maw, what is that to them?

It’s bad enough that the XP in that place is terrible. (I’ve done kills that reward 2 XP or 7 XP.)

We could probably create a whole thread talking about our exploiting our “safe haven” of Pet Battling.

I was on Timeless Isle in Pandaria, getting owned by a Hordie, who basically made it his business to kill me over and over again. (I was never a very good player. Pet Battling is the thing I love most about WoW.) But fortunately, after I rezzed, there was a nearby critter with the green paw print over it. So, I just engaged with it, and suddenly, I was in my safe haven.

He eventually saw that I wasn’t going to move, so he gave up.

My favorite time was in the sewers of Dalaran. There was a team of Hordies that effectively annihilated everyone. While they were busy with everyone else, I sneaked and engaged with the mutant warturtles.

The Hordies eventually noticed me and were apparently very frustrated by the fact that they couldn’t hurt me. One of the Hordies, I guess a Troll Shaman, did a running jump in front of me and cast Thunderstorm in midair. At least I assume that’s what he did, based on the graphics. (Obviously, I know what T-storm looks like.)

I had to laugh. I give him credit for trying, but did he seriously believe that would somehow knock me out of my pet battle sanctuary?

One of the Hordies started dancing with me, so I danced back. Then I finally asked in general if someone could activate the guards so PvP would be turned off. When someone did, I turned off running and just calmly walked out of the sewers.

I think a couple of them were absolutely livid. One of them challenged me to a duel, but I refused, so he made himself /cry.

as a hunter i get pulled out of pet battles all the time because i forgot to dismiss my hunter pets and they’re just hanging out, perfectly targetable by patrolling mobs. sooo frustrating when you’re mid-battle with a blue quality because of course, the battle pet disappears.

That hasn’t happened to my Hunter yet. Thanks for the warning.
