I think you can legally drink from 16 in Australia with parental supervision. You must be 18 or older to buy alcohol, or to drink alcohol in a licensed venue.
My Dad was German and I was given small glasses of whatever my parents were drinking from a young age. (Usually mixed with lemonade or milk!)
