Now I See Why People Play Classic

I would play classic if they had a classic remix type thing

All the new races and class combos added updated graphics and all the zones but wirh classic gameplay and mechanics. But one can only dream.

I AM GETTING MY FILL OF CLASSIC with these Timewalking dungeons in Retail

Yep. As an affliction lock you kind of just have to hope you have instant MR procs or you’re falling off the meter at certain points.

Oh, is that the reason. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a very weird take on game somewhat due to my age

I also came from EQ, SWG, DAoC & CoH (mostly EQ & a lil SWG)

I started MMORPGs because I had nostalgia for real pen & paper RPGs I played as a kid in the late 70s early 80s. I literally started EQ because it seemed to be the D&D game I never got that allowed me to play with other people around the world. Yes the world was the attraction but interacting with the NPCs was half of the fun. My biggest problem was being a dad who worked changing shifts (1st 2nd 3rd) & not being able to find people to consistently play with other than my ex.

I came to WoW because I knew it was easier than EQ2 or SWG (my SWG guild from work went to EQ because they were “real gamers” & didn’t want to play made for kiddies WoW. I just wanted to be able to play solo & explore the world - despite having raided in both EQ & SWG. I saw it like D&D leveling is the game not something that just needs to get finished

Why the wall of text? because I see MMORPGs radically different than the kids do today. To them it’s just another video game. It’s competitive. It’s about challenges. You compare success & show off spoils of war. Those are not things I ever thought of - no one in D&D brags about their +2 longsword or blasts others for competing Keep on the Borderlands"

No I am not an RPer walking around telling a story - I just want hack & slash with a small story about how I get to kill evil bad guys where my character progresses (instead of my physical skills progress)

Classic fills that for me with a focus on character class & race, something I think WoW lost along the way

Well said.

Part of the allure of classic WoW is that there’s a decent balance between gameplay and RPG elements. Is it annoying having to carry around food for your hunter pet (or ammo for your weapon)? Or stock soulshards in a bag? Yeah, a little. But it makes the classes feel different.

Does it kind of suck to have to run all over the place to do basic quests? Again. A little. But it also makes the world feel bigger and the benefit of obtaining a mount - greater.

There’s a lot of subtle pop culture references scattered throughout WoW, and even some not so popular ones that make the player feel a teensy weensy bit clever for noticing.

A big part of playing classic well is in the preparation. A good player in 05 is not the same as a good player in 24, but I’d rather be around those players in 05. Even if some of them are the same person, the mentality has shifted and it’s not for the better.

One of the things I had to learn in EQ was the importance of skills. One time, we were in down time between pulls & one of the kids playing a warrior challenged my ranger to a heal off…

Warrior had bandages, I had low level heals (but never practiced) - his bandages outhealed me because of fizzles & I had a 20% exp penalty because I could cast heals…

After that my prep included maxing out every skill including weapons, just in case. Seems stupid to kids today but I liked that play style over I can just jump in with faster twitch reflexes & just win - though I did play games like that - I just don’t consider RPGs to be those kind of games

An element of D&D ethos is that your character is only as good as how deliberately you play it. By that I mean, the more you think of causes and effects, the better your outcome. It’s like making a wish. Choosing ones words carefully and deliberately increases the odds of a positive outcome.

Playing a character in WoW used to feel kind of like that. One had to consider the interactions, not just with your own choices, but the choices of your group. People that embraced the possibilities of WoW increased their chances of success.

Now the path is laid out for players and the calculations are all done. It’s not a puzzle or riddle anymore. It’s just a paint by numbers game.

It’s crazy to see all the people who want to bash classic content but still can’t manage to do BRD outside of lfr…

What’s even crazier is the people that think classic is actually difficult.

different kind of difficulty

some can’t do twitchy style retail difficulty

some lack the discipline to stick with a game like classic wow to get to the end (some cheese the difficulty by grouping to max level since they can’t solo it)

lol if you think classic has any difficulty.

I think it’s okay to like things for different reasons.

It seems like there’s a trend among the community to hate itself. It’s like a form of masochism. Like if you punish yourself enough, you’ll get more good boy points. That’s not how it works. Play what you like. You don’t need to prove yourself to me. I don’t care what you like or why you like it. Have fun.

“But I did all the things. I raided a mythic bazillion.” Cool.

The average retail player can’t do almost every single LFR released, my proof lies within the fact that constant nerfs happen in LFR even though the average player power goes up with time. Stacks of determination is also a telling sign.

Didn’t say it wasn’t ok to like classic over retail. Everyone has different preferences.

I’m merely talking about the people that are under the delusion that classic is hard difficulty wise.

The average retail player is about the same level as classic players. Most people play classic for either nastalgia or because the game is easier.

LFR is rarely nerfed actually. It’s already tuned to have a 100% completion rate.

I guess my reply would be, “Who cares”? I mean, really. Why do you care if someone, “thinks” classic is harder than retail? Does it really matter? No. It doesn’t. It’s just forum posturing.

It’s like if you were to watch a movie with a movie critic. The whole time they talk about how the lighting sucks or the cinematography isn’t up to par with your favorite producer/director. It would be a joyless experience right? Well. This is kind of similar. Just like what you like. Don’t bother yourself with what other people think. You don’t care anyway.

Because it’s factually not true.

It’s the same as saying 4+4=92.

No one actually cares. It’s just comical people think that.

Are we instead supposed to operate under the delusion that retail is hard difficulty wise?

Tell me you don’t play high level content without telling me you don’t play high end level content.
