Now I know why WOW isn't fun...for me

17’ish year veteran here. Started when I was 17-18. Played all expansions except Pandas and BFA. I dabbled in Classic, Hardcore, and SOD. Now, have been in this expansion since the beginning…

But, after running 2 Mythics today and getting no loot after an hour plus, I see why I am not having fun anymore…maybe this is the majority of players or I just suck now?

My Views on Each “Version” of the game we have to play

Classic WOW - Same game, Same Loot, Same Class Balance, Same Everything.

Classic SOD - Same Game, 90% Same Loot (kinda), “Different” abilities that basically make you level faster because it does more damage or gives higher survivability…

Classic Hardcore - Same Game, Die, Start Over. RIPBOZO

Ultimately, IMO, Classic WOW is top dog for pacing. The simplicity of the game mechanics, spells, and gear progression is unmatched. But, I simply cannot spend the time to level and achieve the same loot I did 15yrs ago. I tried. It really cannot fit in my schedule anymore. I would HAPPILY play Classic with new Loot tables both for questing and Dungeons. Just to stay involved in the game and have something fresh to look forward to. However, we know that is never going to happen. The new abilities were great in SOD. But, again, it only really sped up the leveling. 90% of the new “abilities” we have already seen in later expansions. It just wasn’t a good time spending 3hrs a day spamming for groups to get 1 shot at my SM Axe that never dropped.

Now there is Retail…

My Life in the PVP World of Warcraft.

  • Game is to fast (rip elder emo)
  • To many move cycles.
  • To many addons needed.
  • To many weak auras needed.
  • To many Macros needed.
    - Wait times for ques are crazy long.
  • No friends to que with.
  • Toxic players leave after one loss when gameplay is not optimized. RIP Trash Player (me)

My Life in the Mythic+ World of Warcraft.

  • Tried out healing since it was the only way to get invites without farming rejections for hours.
  • RIPBOZO single shot mechanics.
  • Damage sponge gameplay.
  • So, SO many mechanics that wipe groups. Even at low keys.
  • Preventative gameplay is NOT fun at all.
  • To many addons needed.
  • To many weak auras needed.
  • 30min+ runs for no loot is quite painful. Especially multiple times in a row.

My Life in the World of Warcraft Outside Mythic+ and PVP

  • Delves are chill. No real complaints outside of the gear progression limit. 4 Chances a day at a chance for a 7th trinket in a row is pretty awful. Basic tiers for difficulty. But, loot ILVL stops at 554ilvl? You can farm Mythic + non-stop but I cant farm past 554iLVL ? What a joke. lol
  • Questing provides almost NO USE outside of being a POINTLESS requirement for getting the weekly caches for those stupid keys. That, again, gatekeep gear progression?
  • World Bosses - Do these guys even drop loot? I have seen 1 ring since expansion started.
  • Warbands - Do they have loot? I can count on one hand how many pieces of USEFUL warband loot I’ve seen since expansion began. Nothing EVER drops…EVER
  • LFR - It is what its always been. Que as heals to save hour long que times, get no loot. Rinse and repeat weekly.

Its more apparent than ever that the game is pushed heavily towards the NON casual players when it comes to progression. Both in PVP and PVE. Hell, a new “tier” list breaking down the best classes comes out what seems to be every 72hrs on YT from all the top WOW personalities. Half of which say “this version of the game needs help!”. Why is that? Game is to hard, maybe?

Does the game offer a ton of stuff to do? Yes, yes we do have a TON of stuff we CAN do. However, for me, I enjoy the true meaning of an MMORPG. That is to take a toon, level, gear, progress towards top gear, play the content I want to play, farm without limitations, be happy. But, now, I am just dead in the water…No way am I getting any PVP achievements…No way am I getting any PVE gear past 619 (unless they come out with some catch up mechanic later in the expansion…as they always do). I don’t know how to have fun in the game when I know my toon isn’t optimized and gate kept. (My problem I know)

The game is simply “to hard” for me. I still don’t know if its due to the amount of time I put into the game at this point or the gameplay itself. But, I have finally come to terms with that statement. It sucks, but its true.

If they want to keep the R&G loot type of mechanics, stop wasting time. Make content easier or raise the ceiling for solo gameplay progression (i.E DELVES and HERORIC DUNGEONS). But, they wont do that. You know why? Because players will gravitate to that more than anything else and that will kill Mythic + and Raiding. But, why? I know why…because it would be on OUR terms and timeline to farm until maximized. That in itself should tell Blizzard devs that the player base DOES NOT want this type of challenging gameplay on average. But, it wont change. Top tier sweats will need their race to world first and Blizzard needs Mythic + and ridiculous PVP to be able to broadcast “Tournaments” that literally have the same 90% of players we have seen on teams in it EVERY TIME.

GL out there guys. May all your Mythics drop loot and you only get 1 trinket per 4 Uber delves completed.

And 17 years ago…

You got something from every dungeon run?

The trend over the last 17 years seems to be towards loot continuously falling from the sky. Probably selling 10-15 pieces of blue and purple gear every week. In vanilla seeing a blue piece of gear was like a bright light from heaven.

A whole hour?

Maybe that is what my problem ultimately is today. I don’t want to spend hours trying for something that wont happen. But, at least 17years ago, you didn’t have SUCH a large skill gap in gameplay. So, if stuff didn’t drop, you knew the ceiling wasn’t 10 stories above you.

the loot is in the vault.

You are guaranteed loot from every Bountiful run you do (with a key). As opposed to a 40% loot rate in M+.

You can get roughly 6 keys a week without the vendor keys. 9 keys a week with the vendor keys.

Are you running the 15-20 M+ you’d need every week to hit equivalent loot quantities?

No?

Aight.

The simple fact that it’s guaranteed loot makes Delves MUCH stronger for general gearing purposes vs spamming M+ below +8.

Spend 2hours not playing the game looking for a grp, run a couple keys for no loot and a couple gold, then the following week my vault track will target my highest cap ilvl piece…

Pretty much calling it for M+ til next season.

Guaranteed Loot? You mean trinkets and gloves only? lol

Yes you did. It was just far less noticeable. Because what you also had 17 years ago was an attention span. People always complain the game has changed but you know what has changed more? You. The player.

Instant information and the ability to get anything you want next day via Amazon, Walmart online ect ect. Looking up information for say a book report? Took your whole day. You had to drive to a Library, look it up in the card catalog, find the book and read it.

Having these things near instantly have destroyed people attention spans. It also subconsciously changes their expectations.

To be honest I’m surprised all the (“it’s so easy you’re just lazy”) people haven’t blown this thread up yet. I find this summation to be just about dead on accurate. There is a point where after getting to max the playerbase just becomes separated by a gear gap. For the people who had or have the time to sit in game basically all day and have remaining friend groups it’s just smooth sailing. For pretty much everyone else they hit a wall of rejection, confusion, and what feels like an uphill climb they’ll never get to the top of. I would venture to guess this is a massive reason at the start of every season numbers jump and then very quickly start to decline. People come back to see the new stuff maybe even participate in the very bottom difficulty levels of content just to look at it to say they did. Then…the wall. So basically 75% of the playerbase unsubs and the only people left are the ones who are never going anywhere because it’s all they do, it’s all they ever will do and they all know each other and for them the game doesn’t seem to suck. It’s actually kind of amazing it even survived this long. They’ll keep dangling carrots and making announcements of things they know people have wanted forever. But I’m with you…if they don’t change something about gearing I’m pretty sure I won’t be continuing to play. Having to just basically sit in a city, or go fly around mining just isn’t cutting it anymore. Making friends in the game used to be easy. It’s not social anymore. It’s not social because of the way the game forces people into racing and it’s almost turned into a competition against the players…shrugs. Good post. I agree with everything you said.

you just wasted a lot of time basically just crying about loot because your bad. nice.

when will people understand that the game shouldnt be dumbed down just to fit your personal schedule and wants.

It’s more than that. My warlock is almost completely geared from the great vault and she only does delves no M+ no raiding.

You’re fallaciously equating gear to skill.

The true meaning is playing that RPG in whatever way is fun for you. The same way I play what is fun for me. In the end, this may be an MMO, but ultimately, it is an RPG with lore, and history, and stories. All of which our characters become entwined. Is there “progression”? Sure. But there are those of us who simply want to see the story, and be part of it. We’re not interested in the treadmill that is Mythics.

So I hope you find whatever makes you happy, and you thrive in that content. As for me, and other “casuals” like me, we’ll stick to gear good enough for Heroics or LFR and continue being woven into the story, and not a timed challenge mode.
