Noticing problems a year after changing computers

About a year ago, I bought a new computer. I reinstalled the game in full from the game server, however, I copied my WTF folder from my old computer to my new computer. That folder contains all my add-ons as well. I use curseforge for add-ons and I simply had it search for add-ons on my computer when I installed it. It found them and all seemed fine until about the start of TWW.

Since the start of TWW, I get a lot of LUA error, which I expect with out of date add-ons. I usually just turn off the effected add-on until I see it updated. Today, I was playing with Macros, trying to create an add-on that would execute 3 chat functions and output to guild chat. I was unsuccessful, and ultimately giving up. I went on to do a World Quest, and as soon as I arrived in the aria of the World Quest, the game locked up to the point where I had to access my task manager and force close WoW. I logged back in after restarting my computer only to find myself back where I started when I logged in and started playing with those Macros. The Macros I created were gone. And my UI was reset to when I logged out 2 days ago.

What I’m wondering is, should I at this point completely delete the game from my computer including the WTF folder I have been using for 15 years, and just start from scratch?

No.

The game only saves macro changes and addon data when the game is closed - not when the game crashes.

What you experienced is expected behavior.

Ok, so what caused the game to crash so catastrophically that I had to force close through the task manager instead of just right-clicking on the game on the task bar like I usually do? I have never seen a crash like that in the 15 years I’ve been playing. Also, why am I getting more LUA errors than usual? I mean I even get them when I have the out of date add-on turned off.

Lots of LUA errors could be a sign that a UI reset would be a good idea. You don’t need to delete the entire game, just the cache, wtf, and interface folders. You can just re-name them, that way you keep a copy and if for some reason that doesn’t fix anything you can name them back.

Wait, do you mean the cache and interface folders within the WTF folder?..or am I missing something?

within the world of warcraft folder. You enter that folder, then choose the game version for example _retail_, then in that folder there is a cache, WTF, and Interface folder. https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7549
