Not Enough Memory - Seems to be an error many get

Been playing WOW for about 13 years. I quit for several years because of a similar issue that I am having now. I have purchased a new home & new computer. So it is not “the same” issue.

To test my memory I:
Downloaded 4 separate 2 gig files (3 torrents and 1 from the web)
Loaded and played Final Fantasy Online (Am currently playing)
Loaded and allowed TikTok to run
Loaded and allowed Youtube to run
Loaded and am currently using Adobe PhotoShop
Ran a windows virus scan
Ran gear sims as all this happened.
No errors with MEMORY DIAGNOSTICS Windows

** I deleted temp/junk files on the computer relevant to windows.

** OF COURSE WHEN I RUN WOW, I SHUT 100% of this off.

I did these things all at once with no issue. Adobe is running like a beast. My boot time is about 2 seconds or less. There is nothing strange in the startup. Nothing has changed with the computer or internet. Nothing has changed with wow. This error just “magically” started. I am running 1 step under fiber for my city (Indianapolis). I forget exactly what the speed is. But it is ATTs closest thing. No one else in the home is having any issues. There are no viruses and 2-3 different network scanners show no issues either. 100% of drivers are updated. Windows is updated. The hard drive is NOT full.

I did a scan and repair with WOW no issues. I assume this indicates I somehow broke wow? Is there anything you can thing of outside the box other than delete the addons/wtf folder? If I need to do that, I will. But if there is something else?

Check to see if windows is controlling your page files and vertuial memory.

Do you have notifications turned off as well?

Make sure all of your addons are current and up to date. You can also test by exiting the game completely and renaming the WTF and Interface folders and add .old to them and delete the Cache folder found in the same directory. If that resolves the issue, then you know it is an addon causing the problem and you can go through and rename those folders back after deleting the freshly created folders, but turn all addons off, and turn each one on individually until you find the culprit.

Ha! Ty for the quick reply

I’ve always had notifications on. I can turn them off. I will google it. But can you give me a link of a bit more information on “virtual memory” relevant to wow? Notifications are off. Still crashed.

Not able to talk you through it, but.

This is what it is, to find out if it is a set value or set size by the user.
Old school was to set it. Not any more. Let windows manage it.

What Is the Virtual Memory? How to Set It? (Complete Guide) “description”: “Virtual memory allows computers to compensate for shortages of physical memory by temporarily transferring pages of data from RAM to disk storage.” }

1: Open “File Explorer”, right click “This PC”, and select “Properties”.
2: Select “Advanced system settings” in the pop-up window.
3: In the "[System Properties click “Advanced” tab, and then click “Settings” under “Performance”.
4: In the “Performance Options” window, click “Advanced” tab, and then click “Change” under “Virtual memory”.
5: In the “Virtual Memory” window, uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” and then choose a relatively free space to store the Pagefile.sys file.
6: Check “Custom size” and then type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box. Here, the recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 -3 times the amount of RAM on your system.
7: Click “Set”, and then click “OK”. Restart the computer …
note 8gb of ram = about 16gb of Virtual memory. also setting more Virtual memory will set more drive space so if a bit of drive space is gone that’s where it’s gone…

Thanks for the write up.
I did not have time to do all that.
My point is I got told by a GM in Support to let Windows control all of it
Since windows 8 ended and windows 10 came about. I lost interest in Bata testing windows, so I did not know about the change it made with Wow.exe and windows useing memory in the cashe. We realy need some core pressing with limmited memory sizes, but that’s for another class.
Let windows control as of 2020…
64bit is a comming.

This was never good advice, even dating back to when virtual memory became a thing in Windows 3.0 and this kind of “advice” started to appear. The less physical memory you have the more benefit you get from having virtual memory - why would you want to have less of it?

The only reason to set a custom virtual memory size as of Windows 2000 is for troubleshooting purposes, and even then it’s debatable. Leave it enabled, leave it to the OS. Compression and unallocated resources usually mean most people will see minimal page file usage even in that situation, and drive space won’t be unnecessarily consumed unless you explicitly impose a minimum size (which you shouldn’t be doing, as mentioned already).

Memory: 8192 MB RAM – Available OS Memory: 7968 MB RAM (4gbs soldered to the mainboard - 4gbs that i could upgrade) and have 16000 MB min/max set for virtual memory.(it’s more not less if left to the OS) and never had any problems running WoW . i do have an Intel(R) UHD Graphics (10 gen i5 CPU ) Display Memory: 4111 MB - Dedicated Memory: 128 MB - Shared Memory: 3983 MB - Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

I have the i5 10400 with 16gb and a 512gig SSD ( game ), 240gig SSD ( win10 pro).
Memory is ddr4 2666 as per max motherboard and prosseser.

My settings number in wow is 3.

Do not change vertuial memory from Windows to control. As well as the SSD is set to let windows control sizes of page files.
