I was looking for a new raptor skin. I picked out a nice blue one from Gorgrond, apparently it was a boss mob named Riplash.
Upon taming it, I discovered that these unique pets keep their original name and it cannot be changed. Effectively this is putting a handicap on the skin. Naming pets is one of my favorite things, who cares that much at Blizzard that we have to use their picked name?
It’s just silly.
It gives a market for Inscriptionists that make Certificate of Ownership. Just buy a stack, then you can rename your pet.
Me, after 86 pets I sometimes have a hard time coming up with good names, so a lot of the time I’m content to leave it as the name of the rare. I tamed a Feathermane wolfhawk a while back that was a named mob (Varoudnir) but it tamed with the generic name so I manually renamed it Varoudnir shrug.

Well don’t I feel silly now. I literally abandoned the pet and flew away in disgust. Thanks for the info! Back to Gorgrond!
Theres also some cool names you wouldn’t be able to name your pet that can be used too.
For example theres a spider named Likk the Hunter and you normally can’t have spaces in the name. Its also funny cause you get randos doing the /lick emote on you.

you can buy ( or make ) a certificate of ownership on the AH. that will allow you to rename it. you can also use it to rename a previously named pet in your stable. one time use
Pet naming is a subtle art. I enjoy trying to decipher hunter pet Easter egg/references. Most don’t have any, but there are some fun ones out there.
