NORMALIZE playing a sub optimal fun spec/build

The game is suffering a lot because of the mentality some people have which they also try to force others follow the mentality of:
-“X covenant is garbage”
-“OH i am forced to play X covenant cuz it is just better”
-“This ability is very fun but i ll go with the highest performing one instead”
-“This ability flat out works better”
-“Has the most potential to be good so it is the one you are gonna go for”

People need to realize IT IS OK TO PLAY SUB OPTIMAL FUN SPECS AND BUILDS

You are not a:
-World first mythic raiders
-World first highest m+ er

Therefore you dont NEED them, you arent gonna die without them, you can do all the content you want without being forced to play the highest performing spec build and do well if you are a skilled player. An average player on the other hand will do average with fotm and could even do better with his own fun build which he knows well because he didnt just copy paste it from icy veins.

I am playing arcane, a spec far from Fotm, I am using amplification a talent which is not the best and I am using vision major which is by far not the best essence, why do I do that?
Because the spec is a lot more fun to play like that, and that doesnt stop me from doing anykind of content I want since I am neither in the two above hardcore groups, and I am performing very well even with such a build in both raids and m+.
Yes I could be having higher performance if I was playing the best build, and yes you could say wiping at a mythic boss with 0.1% is my fault, but in reality the person who is at fault in those scenarios are the people who fail mechanics or under perform even with the best build, you are not responsible for their failures.

People need to normalize playing what if fun and what people enjoy instead of acting like they are FORCED to play FotM

It’s already normalized; normal people just play what they want.

Oh i wish that was true, but based on the amount of posts we ve read in these forums about covenants, discords with people only caring about what is BIS and youtube videos pushing that mentality of “if its not the best, you are forced to choose X”, i have very strong doubts.

I agree a lot with this! It’s understandable that some people enjoy crunching numbers and there is a thrill in getting your group just right when it comes to damage, interruptions, and speedily timing a mythic+ and making it easier.

But those things IMO cannot be achieved simply by picking and choosing based on classes, talents, and specs, right? I’m no guild or raid leader but surely you guys aren’t looking just at those things and judging a book by its cover? It might be the cup of tea of speedrunners and those looking to break their records, but again give the lesser played talent/spec a chance

The problem is people try to hyperoptimise super trivial things like WQs and islands and it flows onto low-mid tier content like 15 and below keys and heroic pugs. I helped a friend the other day do a Heroic N’Zoth to get a catchup token and this guy there was going on and on about how we all don’t belong there and he’d never take us in his “3k io only groups” and he was nitpicking every talent and spec he didn’t feel deserved to be in this absolute bleeding edge content. It was stupid but I didn’t really care, some people like to flex at silly times and I just ignore their foolishness.

The problem isn’t even them, it’s that people THINK like that and live that life to the point where they suck all the fun out of what they do. Low-mid tier content is FUN because it’s silly and random and you can just log in and do it. You can do 15 keys every week as any class or spec. You can do heroic raids easily as well. You can just grind gear and play what you want. You don’t need to hyperoptimise every little thing you do and so what if some nerd comes in and spergs about what he does in his cool kid group? He doesn’t matter. He is the nub in your casual group. He is the odd one out.

also sub optimal usually isn’t fun

hence why people usually play meta specs

I agree, that mentality has been drilled into their brains and cannot even IMAGINE playing a sub optimal fun spec, like quite literally their mind sees that as an impossibility.

That is totally why I am playing arcane with vision major and amplification.

If your goal is to top dps, if you arent skilled enough you wont top the dps meter even with Fotm, WoW isnt a game full of ultra high skill capped players, you can easily top dps meters with even the most underperforming specs at times

I’m pretty much maining survival right now and I can tell you just playing a non meta spec and a non meta build is like light years apart

Both of them can be quite similar, try fire mage without master blaster/masterful build and it is light years different.

You need to play the optimal build if:

you play with your friends in a normal guild and looking to push for AOTC. you are hard stuck on the last boss, but switching to the optimal build might just give you the edge you need to finally get it.

you play with your buddy in pvp and hardstuck at 1700. playing the meta build/comp will probably be enough to get you pass the line and to 1800.

In short. if you care at all about achieving goals in game, you need to min max.

And yes. that is your fault. People make mistakes. People could always try to do better and make less mistakes. But you had consciously decided to gimp yourself. You are consciously choosing to hurt your group’s ability to defeat the content.

By the way. Meta/FOTM builds already take into consideration of ease-to-play. certain builds, with technically higher throughput don’t actually gets played at all, and is not recommended even at mythic raiding level due to often time how annoying it is to execute.

The community has always worked this way because people are averse to figuring things out. It doesn’t even matter if the community “wisdom” is accurate or not, it’s the wisdom.

Its not fun for me to pick something that is an objectively worse option.

I usually go for what is fun and feels more natural with my playstyle. Ill have alts in all covenants.

Ah yes, choosing to blame the skilled person that also knows games are made for fun rather than forceful work while letting the unskilled player who fails mechanics or underperforms even using the fotm build get away.

Yeah dont mind me if i dont take you seriously xD

True some people will always be lazy, the thing is these people shouldnt be whining anyway since they ll blindly follow whatever the guide tells them to.

Yet we ve seen many such meta slaves moan and whine about how they are FORCED to choose the covenant they dont like even though there’s nothing forcing them to but themselves

Like does this even happen outside of like super top end activities?

Thank you for skipping the exact line following what you quoted. is that people should do their best to make less mistakes. Except that you have made your mistake before the boss is even pulled, and ain’t making any attempt to fix it.

Isn’t there a word for “purposefully doing the wrong thing”? Perhaps it’s Trolling?

They won’t just do that, they’ll operate as if anyone not following whatever the communal wisdom is bad and wrong - be it a mythic route, a spec, whatever.

WoW will never be as experimental and playful as even a D3 season because of the number of players, the small amount of replayable content (with world firsts and videos of same), and the esportification of things like mythics.

Were there not a pandemic, I doubt I’d be playing; as a fresh D3 season is far more enjoyable and the “grind” such as it is is over pretty quickly.

You can see they tried to emulate the season legendary system with azerite pieces and that failed spectacularly.

Even outside of the high end, I feel like some people will do it, just to make the game easier. People prefer the path of least resistance, after all.

Me, I don’t care one iota about these people, other than what it does to my leveling progress. I take what I like, and if it is not fun, I take something else. I have enough versions of all of the classes, that I can experiment with the various talents and specs, and tend to lean into the ones I really like. I almost always take Murder of Crows on Hunters, Phoenix Flames and Blast Wave on Fire Mages, and Double Time for Warriors. I have no idea if they are “the best,” but I like them.

Each of my characters will determine their covenant while actively playing the game, and will likely decide based on aesthetic, and not some min/max theorycrafter’s idea of what I should do. I rarely PVP, and I have never set foot in a current-content Mythic dungeon or raid. I farm the heck out of old ones, though.

Find a guild that doesn’t care what you play.

Im just not going to use half my abilities. I’m not world first raiding, why should I need to cast holy light? It’s not FUN.
