Normal to get bodied by locks?

sitting on 4.2k HP on my hunter and a lock basically killed me in the duration of a deathcoil. It was basically, dots -> deathcoil -> Shadowburn -> im dead. It took him 16s to kill me according to details.

Is there something I’m missing that I can do here? I thought of attempting to scatter trap but I was already deathcoiled and fully dotted so I would have to sit and eat while dots ticked and I’m not sure it would have mattered enough.

Am I basically dead if a lock gets Agony, corruption and SL up on me within range of his death coil?

Sorry forgot to post on my hunter

That’s me vs locks.

It’s rough for the hunter and I see them as free kills honestly. Having tested the match up a fair bit on pservers as the hunter, you have to just max range them 100% of the time basically and actually scoring a kill on a lock will take forever. You out-range everything a lock can do with 3/3 hawk eye but if you make a momentary mistake you better have shadow reflector equipped or you’re a corpse. If they have succ out, you need to preemptively nade or FD the seduce and kill the pet.
Of course, if you massively outgear the lock you can just kill them with scatter aimed auto multi.

Obviously the DC didn’t last 16s he got the jump on me on my mount so a bit of the time was me trying to get a bit further and then dismounting.

You should look into taming a cat. Out of all the hunter pets cats always messed me up the most. They just seem to hit so fast.

I generally run with a 1.3 attack speed cat at the speed I died it wouldn’t have done much as he only cast instants though.

Wait until you start encountering SL warlocks later in classic. Prot warriors and bears feel inadequate next to the durability of those things.

Yup, get used to it

Yeah at 60 going SL lock, unsure what pet I’ll use just know I’ll be pretty beefy and my lock is a gnome so extra annoying.

The only thing I can think of is maybe get some shadow protection pots, not a very economic answer though.

Don’t you guys have a talent that makes your pet big, angry, and immune to fear? I always had problems with that button.

Just realized I replied to the wrong person lol.

Details aside, yes, it is normal to get wrecked by locks 1v1. Most classes do.

Being a day one player, this is why I rolled a lock

Locks are tough for everybody 1v1. If you’re able to get to max range, you can potentially kite him out, since he can’t really hit you, but it’s going to take a lot of room and really long time.

Unfortunately Locks are just super scary in 1v1 unless you are UD. Fear just doesn’t break in Classic like you would want it to and they have so much survivability.

Best you can do is try and out range them. If you are an engineer you can possibly use shadow reflector to turn their CC against them.
I can’t think of any Hunter specific match up tricks there are off the top of my head, been so long since I played one in this gaming environment.
Deathcoil has a delay based on travel time so you can possibly Scatter or Intimidate (depending on spec) the Lock as he coils you to prevent the auto fear that follows?
Not sure if FD has any batching mechanics that can negate spell effects (like the classic Neilyo Vanish)

Real simple here. What you have to do is make good friends with a rogue. Make sure he has all his cooldowns, and you are all set.

you can FD out of spellcasts (it ends them immediately)

You can outrange the lock (he cant chase you down and has no snares unless he’s heavy Aff, and its a very bad 30% snare)

You can make sure you have a fast-attacking pet to make sure that Fear and Immolate have long cast times, and you have a much higher chance of causing pushback/time loss on Drains.

You can Viper Sting the lock (itll force him to lifetap for Mana).

But if the lock is some variant of the 20/31/0 Soul Link PvP build…

run. Just run. Leave. He cant chase you down, is your only salvation. If you insist on trying to stick around and “score that kill”, youll get killed, every single time. He’s got about 15k effective HP BEFORE you take drains into account.

His damage output is kinda low (doesn’t have a lot of the talents that buff DoTs, does not have the talents that reduce cast time on nukes) but hell just whittle you down until you’re dead.

You cant kill him alone.

But he cant kill you, either, unless you let him.

As to the situation described… something is way off. DoTs do NOT hit that hard without a CRAPLOAD of +spell damage (i mean 400+) to kill you in only 15-20 seconds. A full row of DoTs, even in heavy affliction (So, Agony, Corruption, Siphon Life, and Immolate) with ~200 spellpower will do roughly 4000 damage… over almost 30 seconds, not 15.

DoTs cant crit, and Haste is both A) not a thing in Classic and B) didn’t speed up DoT ticks till like… Cata?

If he blew you out in 15 seconds, it wasn’t the DoTs that did it. He hit you with something else. A lucky Nightfall Proc might account for some of it, but DoTs alone did not kill you in 15 seconds.

There was a deathcoil and a shadowburn in there
