Noob question: *very* confused about embellishments

I’m returning to the game and attempting to gear up my monk. I has the Primal Infusion and sort-of understand that I need to make a work order and purchase some materials on the auction house.

However, I don’t really understand what to do. I’ve read some guides that I can make an Elemental Lariat - is that what I want to do?

It also seems like I can add a special embellishment enchant to another item. If I do this, what happens if I loot something in that slot that is an ilvl upgrade? Can I upgrade the level of the piece of gear I embellished?

Also I don’t really know what’s going on with Spark of Ingenuity. Is that somehow related to the Primal Infusion?

The Lariat is a good choice for almost any character. It comes with a built in Embellishment, essentially an extra power, that you don’t need to find an additional rare ingredient item to create. Of course being a neck slot it does not provide as much in the way of regular stats as say a chest or leg piece would, so the decision kind of comes down to how easily you expect to be getting upgrades going ahead.

Embellishments are something you add when making an item to give it an extra power. A few recipes like the Lariat have one auto-included but most do not and need a rare ingredient. They don’t carry over. If you get a drop, you’ll have to decide if the upgrade from the drop is worth losing the Embel for. Note that you can only wear at most 2 Embellished items so you can typically find somewhere else to put it if you need it.

The Sparks are just Blizzard’s way of gating epic crafted gear. Each epic crafted piece needs one (sometimes two) and early on we could only get one per week. You’ll need one to get a good item crafted.

Primal Infusions are something you add to the craft to make the outcome a higher ilvl. They are related in the sense that you can only use them with recipes that need Sparks but they do very different things.

Adding either an Embellishment or an Infusion makes the recipe “harder to make”. This usually means that only someone specialised in that recipe is going to be able to make it for you, so it might take longer to find someone. It also means it’s harder for them to guarantee the maximum quality, although by now plenty of crafters can do both Embel and Infusion, especially ona busy server like Area 52.

So I have to craft an item to add an embellishment to it?

That’s right, it is an extra ingredient you add when crafting. You can’t put them on drops.

Sorry one more question. If I make a work order for the Lariat - and it only has 1 socket and is below 405, can I upgrade it later or would I need to craft a whole new one with another Primal Infusion?

You can upgrade it using the recrafting option near the top left of the menu at the work order person. Recrafting requires ~40% of the BOE mats, but does not require extra infusions, sparks, chaos, embellishments, or missives. Note that recrafting is guild or personal orders only, so you’ll have to find a crafter rather than rely on the public order system.

edit: also, sockets are added using the Tiered Medallion Setting item. This item comes in 3 qualities. A tier 1 will add 1 socket, up to the first socket, a tier 2 will add 1 socket up to the 2nd socket, and a tier 3 will add 1 socket up to the 3rd. So on the lariat, you will want to buy one tier 2 medallion and use it on the lariat, and THEN buy a tier 3 medallion and use it on the lariat only after the 2nd socket is on it.

Oh man. Do you know of any guides on how to craft a pretty high ilvl one?

No infusion will be from 382-392, primal infused will be from 395-405. The quality of the necklace you receive will be determined by the rank of materials you use, as well as the skill of the crafter. According to a random JC from my server’s trade chat (thanks Demonchibix) it’s not possible to 100% guarantee a 405 lariat without an insight, but a 402 is still pretty good. If I were you I’d look for a crafter that can do 402 with a t2 diamond (which is probably reasonable) unless you want to risk it on the public orders. Just don’t get scammed into paying the dude 20k for a craft

Do I need a rank 3 illimited diamond to get 405? Also what’s an insight?

So do I actually trade all of the materials to the crafter - or is this through some workorder UI?

According to my sources it is impossible to get 405 100% guaranteed without the insight, even with a t3 diamond. An illustrious insight is a finishing reagent used by the crafter. It requires 50 of THEIR mettle, so will often require you to pay a high tip for them to use. It would probably be cheaper to do multiple recrafts with a t2 diamond.

There is a crafting order system. You can find it in valdrakken, it looks like a hammer on the minimap, and is the blue/grey circle north of the AN in Artisan’s Market on the main map.

Yes that is great but you cannot upgrade existing equipment unless someone in your guild is a specialist in the pattern OR you spam trade chat till you find someone and then negotiate a reasonable price… As someone on a low-pop rp realm I had to change back to my old realm and still have not managed it…
