How difficult is it to get a different races mount? If I go undead, how difficult would it be to get a Orc wolf mount? If I go gnome, how difficult would it be to get a ram mount? What are the best ways to attain this goal?
Earn exalted with that faction and have some bucks in the bank.
Before AQ40 War Effort, better start working on that right away.
After AQ40 War Effort, just hoard cloth and turn in for easy rep.
By 1.12, they had cloth turn-ins for city rep outside of your race. It was mainly about collecting Runecloth, which took a geared 60 maybe a week or so per faction of putting your back into it.
Prior to that, there was only one very rare, repeatable quest that could be done (basically, a “find item, return item” quest, where the item spawned in random locations) that took forever to do and was impractical. It was also not intended, and a famous post on the General forums had screenshots of a GM contacting the player (a gnome riding a horse) saying essentially, “Wait- how’d you get that?”
IIRC, you just need to reach Exalted with the race in question.
Runecloth will likely be pretty cheap a year in, so you can buy your way to exalted without too much fuss. Most the cost will still come from the training/mount purchase.
Get Exalted with the other faction. Spend 900G.
Easy.
Super easy. Get exalted with AV and you’ve got your ram mount.
It took a while. One of my crowning achievements in Vanilla was getting a nightsaber on my gnome warlock. xD
You’ll lose a few hundred gold in cloth to gain the reputation. But if it’s worth it to you, then do it. I get skeletal steeds on my orcs. Btw, if you do quests for other factions while you level, it’ll really help. If you want undercity rep for example, take your character to tirisfall right at level 1, and do every quest off undead NPCs you can find. Clean out tirisfall, silverpine, and hillsbrad. You’ll get a nice headstart. After that, they occasionally have quests from undercity for other dungeons and zones. Tap everything you find before it turns grey. If it’s a different faction you want, then just apply the logic to that one. Go to that starting area right away, and do all of their quests. If you don’t have a trainer there, too bad, just deal with it. It’s worth it down the road.
Thanks for the insight everyone. I guess I’ll be taking my undead to Org at lvl 1. See you in Classic.
That’s a good way to do it. I ended up going to the Nelf starter zone and picking up all the quests I could and basically. . leveled over? Man what a pain in the rear. . But I got my kitty cat!!
Unless they release the BG mounts early. I remember farming Exalted with SW to get my horse only for BG’s to release one a month later…
Yea, it took a LOT of Runecloth as I remember – a guildie was collecting scraps from us to try and get her Darnasus mount.
Also, recall, that in Vanilla, the skill was cheap, and the mount expensive. So, if you want to drop 1000g on your epic mount, best get the rep first and then the mount rather than the other way around getting a “handy” mount first, lest you have to earn another 1000g.
When I got mine, I had a friend buy it for me, as he had the rep/rank for the discount (for some reason I recall having a rank of Sgt or above got you a discount, but may he just also had rep).
there were 2 actually.
Morrowgrain research(for NE Rep)-2(25?) rep a turn-in, a gnome very famously did this.
Lost Supplies(for SW rep)-2 rep a turn-in. could have been 25
wow reading the old comments, I seem to be very wrong on the rep amounts, lol.
The one I was referencing was the lost supplies. The screenshots were great- the GM admitted that they did not realize the quest could be repeated to the degree that a gnome would be riding a stallion (this was very early, before mounts could be acquired through cloth turn-ins).
I guess I’ll run past you as orc going to the undercity.
yah, i think i remember that, lol it was always a gnomes who the stories are about :O)
Pretty tough, you’ll need to do that race’s quests at-level to max rep. When the cloth turn-in quest is added, you can turn in 60 runecloth for a 150(?) rep.
Or you could have so much fun low level questing to bring your factions to exalted.
To be frank the mechachicken kinda sucks.
