I want to play a rogue in classic, but don’t really want to do the cookie-cutter specs.
I’d prefer to play combat style, but I really want to spec all the way down to improved sap. I want the 90% sap as well as the increased speed while in stealth, preferably sooner than later.
Anyone have experience with such a spec and/or suggestions on good talent point usage after I get imp. sap?

all classes will be regulated to cookie cutter.
That’s Classic WoW for you.

The thing about the talent system is that “good talent point usage” is pretty much just going to be the cookie cutter build.
There’s a reason they’re the standard build: That’s the optimal setup for DPS. That’s the best place to put the talents.

Your build would be a disaster, gimping yourself drastically.

              ^^ this
Unlike retail where all talents are viable in Classic many are useless and the choices are actually less meaningful (or choices at all)

No, no they won’t. A person does not have to use the cookie cutter specs. Part of the fun of Vanilla was coming up with your own spec and finding what worked best for you and was the most enjoyable.
I played a spec on my hunter in Vanilla that I’m sure someone like you would have ridiculed, but I did amazing in pvp with her.
To the OP: I can’t help you unfortunately with rogues because the highest I got mine in Vanilla was around level 30 or so. It just wasn’t the class I enjoyed in the end. Unless you plan to min/max, play around with your talents, have fun with it and find what you enjoy. You do not have to use a cookie cutter spec. If you want to raid, there will be guilds that are not obsessed with min/maxing and will understand the value of a skilled player who is good at their class and won’t force you into a cookie cutter spec.

Just go full ambush. That’s the most fun spec. The whole cc then reset 4 times until you kill people is boring to me.

I guess that’s what you want. Not sure if you are trying to PVP or PVE with this but uh I guess it’s not too bad. Giving up some damage for stealth and CC is pretty good when you are just farming your dungeon gear and you can blow people up with AR and BF if they are unfamiliar with your spec.
Goodluck.

You can spec for whatever you want while leveling. Personally, I go for ghostly strike instead of adrenaline rush, which is useful against every mob, as opposed to a 5m CD. Having a top build isn’t a concern until you get to raiding.

Ghostly Strike, Setup, and Lightning Reflexes to grab you a couple free combos.
Rupture I suppose as your primary finisher coupled with Hemorrhage keep them bleeding nice.
Premed is wickid with Initiative and Ambush.
My .02. GL with your toon. Hope that helps you.

Is this some kind of dungeon dps build or something? I can’t see why you’d wanna go combat with imp sap otherwise.
Edit: If you’re trying to do something like that this is the build i would use.

I’m not sure if serrated blades or malice is a better use of your last couple points. Also hopefully you won’t miss improved SnD too much since dungeon fights tend to end more quickly.

Yeah, basically a dungeon/questing/soloing thing. I want to be able to have fun with quest/world content on my own with stealth/sap, as well as be able to sap in dungeons.
Thanks everyone who offered up help - I will look deeper into your suggestions and builds. I understand the cookie cutter specs are there for a reason, but i don’t really plan on playing in an environment where those specs are either needed or asked of me.
I like the idea of being in deep stealth and being able to sap without it breaking stealth for sneaking around, which is why I want to spec down to imp sap, but I also want to use the remainder of my points wisely as to maximize my damage.

I usually just stay full cold blood/hemo pvp spec even while doing dungeons and soloing. You get all the nice Subtlety talents and still do more dps than pretty much every class. You also get to have a really strong build in wPvP and BGs. The first few Assassination talents are so powerful it’s hard for me to go without them.

Thanks, are there only two dagger required abilities? Backstab and Ambush?

Yup. Daggers can be fun but I wouldn’t recommend them for solo questing.

Cool, yeah I asked because I don’t want to be tied to daggers.

              During the Beta
I went 11 points into Sub to get to get increased stealth (Master of Deception) and faster stealth walking speed (Camouflage) with one point to get Ghostly Strike. It made solo’ing when required easier.
5 into Malice, 3 into Ruthlessness while dumping the rest into Combat.
Never was fond of cookie cutter builds.

You should try daggers out at some point. The burst damage can be fun to wield.
