I have been very faithfully doing pretty much ALL the 8.3 content since patch day so far. I got the recipe to craft a “Void Focus (Alchemy).” It needs 10 splinters… but it seems that I have not gotten ONE of these items… could this be? The guides seem to say they drop from mobs in both areas… I’ve killed countless ones in addition to those needed for dailies… are they REALLY this extremely rare?
I have exactly the same issue. When I went to raise it in-game it said Blizzard didnt think there was an issue. I’ve killed so many of the enemies it drops from and nata.
OK, so it’s not just me I see. This is doubly damning for me because even if I want to get up to a 440 trinket via the Abyssal Focus system, I am prevented from advancing THAT line because I need to craft an Abyssal Stone to even start that progress, I have ALREADY earned the prerequisite (Restored Focus) AND it says I NEED what I already EARNED to craft it.
I am dead in the water. And they want me to buy a new xpac? Get real #blizzfail.
OP, have you actually learned the recipe? If you haven’t clicked on the recipe to learn it you wouldn’t be able to get the shards. Also, focus on the actual cultists, not the corrupted forces or aberrations in the zones. I am pretty sure I have gotten them from the K’thir and Faceless Ones too.
@ Brightbrown
Are you attempting to craft your trinket AT the Abyssal focus? You need to go to the Abyssal Focus itself to craft the item. This is similar to needing the Black Forge to smelt Dark Iron ore into bars.
The droprate is just low. The quickest way to get them is to hang out in the Uldum minor vision for as long as you can, killing the cultists in the courtyard. There are usually plenty of people in the area doing the same thing (depending on the time you go in, of course), so they respawn quickly.
@Maganar
Yes I know about needing to be at the station to craft… THAT is a different issue, separate post (but mine says Empowered not Restored)… and I put in my OP that I have the recipe for Void Focus.
So ya get an actual drop rate off cultists in the Uldum vision? I had been NOT waiting until my sanity ran out… BUT not having gotten one damn splinter despite the many hours I put in is just wrong.
I have the exact same issue. And I just looked in my inventory and the couple splinters I DID have are now gone. I don’t seem to have as much of an issue getting the shred of insanity (the next reagent needed to make higher level gear) through raids, etc…but no more focus splinters. I’ve farmed them for hours on end and followed videos, forums, you name it. Nada.
I’m not sure I understand your post.
If you’re getting the Shreds of Insanity, that means you have the quest for Tier 2 or 3 crafting, and have already unlocked Tier 1 crafting.
The Void Focus Splinters are for Tier 1 crafting only. Once you have constructed the Tier 1 Void Focus, Focus Splinters no longer drop because you don’t need them anymore. They serve no other purpose.
Am I missing something here?
Maganar’s question was whether you clicked on it to learn the recipe versus if the recipe is still in your bag. You answered that you “have the recipe,” which is ambiguous; it could mean either, hence his/her question.
If the recipe is in your bag, the Focus Splinters will not drop.
If you clicked on (“used”) the recipe and learned it, such that it is in your crafting pane, and the Focus Splinters are not dropping at all (despite relatively low drop rate), this might be a bug.
I got my Focus Splinters from the human N’Zoth mobs in the lesser visions.
I never got enough splinters to craft any tier 1 gear. In the chamber of heart I cannot even interact with the void focus. Also, like I said, when reading this thread, I thought to myself that I no longer had the splinters, and sure enough they are gone. I have 2 tier 1 recipes that require using the void focus, and have all of the mats, but still cannot craft the items.
The void focus doesn’t even appear in the Heart Chamber unless you’ve completed creating it. If there’s a Void Focus on the floor of the Chamber, you’re past that part of the process. You can craft any tier 1 recipes you know while standing near the Focus.
So I am not sure how this happened, but I just double checked.
I just (after posting that last reply), went to the chamber of heart and went ahead and crafted one of the recipes I have. No issue. However, I can say that without a shred of doubt that I never got all of the splinters. As soon as I had the original 2 in my bags, I read up what on what they were and were used for, and began farming. None ever dropped for me. This past week while doing a mythic is when I got my first shred of insanity, and wondered why I got those to drop and not the splinters (as I read to find out what they were as well). I don’t drink or smoke, so I know I didn’t get the splinters to drop, then just completely forgot…heh.
I dunno…I would suggest to the OP that perhaps go to the chamber with all of your mats and try to craft an item you have learned that requires the void focus…see if it works.
Hopefully I’m making sense, I just woke up.
Also, as soon as I was done I had a new recipe in my bag for a pair of legs that were 455.
Side note; are you unable to sell the pieces of new gear you create? I went to AH after crafting to sell the legs and they were soulbound.
The new items are, indeed, BoP. Only for the use of the crafter. It’s not the first time Blizz had made top-tier craftables BoP. They seem to hate crafting professions making any money.
That really blows. I figure I can sell any of my other items I craft, why not the new stuff? It will be nice when I can craft 475 gear, but as of yet haven’t gotten there.
Thanks Blizz.
You MAY have a point. I have been used to seeing if a item to craft says it NEEDS X to craft, that means you MUST acquire the item (i.e. you do NOT have it). I KNOW that I got my 20 Shreds of Insanity and NOW remember that was to give me Empowered Void Focus. The crafting station behind Wrath SAYS Empowered Void Focus. I am 14 of 200 Shreds to get the last Void Focus thing to make the 470 trinket.
I still have no recollection of getting the splinters and crafting the Void Focus (spent a month in the hospital, that may have killed some memory cells)… but it’s a fair assumption that if I AM at Empowered, I MUST have gone through plain Void Focus.
Think I have all the mats to get to the 470 item (assuming “discovery” MEANS the recipe drops on the first one you craft), but before I go spending them all, I decided to sim the 470. While it did out sim both that I am wearing, it was by a very minor amount (like 80 dps). That means at least another 186 Ny boss kills… at 12/week, that’s 16 weeks. Who knows what sort of trinkets that may drop in that time that will wipe out that tiny advantage. AND if I can get the Void-Twisted Titanshard, I’m pretty GTG with trinkets.
Hey I know this is old, but I ended up here so maybe you too. I had the same issue. In my Alchemy tab the recipe “Void Focus” was still orange (even though my alchemy is maxed out?) I need 10 void focus and they never ever drop.
I was looking at this recipe in orange thinking of it like a quest. Thing is, I had completed the quest to make a void focus. I just forgot I guess because it made it so long ago? I already had my void focus behind wrathion. My next quest to upgrade the focus I need 20 Shreds of Insanity. Which do drop for me.
Even after you craft your void focus the recipe remains orange and it made me feel like it was a quest I still needed to complete. I was walking around trying to make a second one lol. Why make it a recipe if you’re only gonna make one with a quest item that only drops during the quest? Why make it a recipe then? Maybe that helps someone.
Can’t thank you enough. The same thing happened to me: void focus is still showing as orange in my alchemy menu, making me think I still need to craft it, but no matter how many mobs I kill, I don’t get any void focus splinter drops.
The thing is: the void focus is showing up for me in the chamber of heart, so that means I’m past the step of creating it (probably already created it at some point, I don’t remember). And when I looked at my quest log, I have “Maintaining Focus” as a pending quest. So my next step would be to find 20 shreds of insanity, to upgrade the void focus.
Apparently those are found in Ny’alotha.
Thanks again, I was going crazy trying to find those splinters. And yes, having void focus as a recipe make no sense at all and is completely misleading. Just bad UX choice.
