There’s a (small) update on this from the Wowhead interview with Kris Zierhut today:
There was a Blue Post that was somewhat vague about when Season of Mastery transfers to Wrath Classic would open up, is there any specific timetable on when that will go into effect?
Kris Zierhut : I’m sorry, but unfortunately I don’t have a timetable on when that will go into effect, it really comes down to the engineering. We wanted to have it ready for Wrath of the Lich King launch, but it just didn’t make it. It is something we are working on to get as soon as we can, but I don’t have a date for you.

Agreed. I would love to play my SoM character in WOTLK even if we are past launch. The heirloom + flying in Northrend will help massively. Any updates on when the xfers will be available? December seems far from now…

Game will be on life support in 2 months.
According to a bunch of posters, SoM is already deceased.
Is there something confusing about Phandera’s post? It’s a direct dev quote that addresses this.

2 months that I could be grinding on him early WOTLK. Instead we’ll have xfers when WOTLK will be dead. Awesome.
SoM was never supposed to be a stepping stone to wrath.

Yeah exactly. Just be glad you’ll be able to xfer at all. It wasn’t meant to be this way at first

I got that point months ago. But now they announced that we would be able to, so it’s a valid question to ask. 1 to 3 months is super vague.

I get that Blizzard doesn’t want to kill SoM, but it’s already dead. I just leveled a new character to 40 on jom, just playing with a friend, and we just realized that the Era servers are actually healthy right now, and had to reroll. No big deal, the game is fun, but we were level 40 /shrug
It might make the Era people mad, but the vanilla community is so spread thin, that you have to give people a base ‘always able to play’ space. You can still cash grab new seasons… just don’t trap people anywhere. Transfers from SoM to Era should have been open from the start. Yes, people would abuse the xp buff, yes this, yes that. The most important thing is keeping players together.
Honestly, there should be a way to log into Era for any character you’ve ever leveled, and play them on the Era servers.
Next, do some competitions, or hire the peeps creating EQ1 content still, and get some new cheap vanilla dungeon content. Could be special. /shrug
You could do all kinds of ‘opt-in’ content (so the purists can have their fun)… housing zones… interaction and competition with other Blizzard games/universes. All the service fees and subscriptions? I just don’t see how you could lose if you got creative with your design. Just sayin’.
