I have made a human hunter and a gnome hunter, but get no starting pet at level 1. The allied races get pets at starting. Is this a bug?
You get a pet around level 5.
Allied races get a starting pet because they start at level 10.

You get the ability to tame pets at 5, but you don’t seem to be able to get the pets shown in the character creation page, which sucks.
Start a character on Exile’s Reach, and you should get the starting pet from your level 7 quest, after you get Freezing Trap.
Also, you can just go tame them out in the wild, none of the character creation pets are unique excepting some of the Allied Race ones.

You were right- I was able to tame the mechanical bunny on the gnome after the ice trap quest. Mostly made the character to see if it was going to be a mechanical spider like in the creation page. Still bunny.
