I don’t really mind if people don’t want to do it, but the event needs to be changed to account for the fact that it’s clearly not as popular or exciting as Blizzard probably thought it would be. It’s a massive source of Niffen rep and it isn’t available to you if you can’t do it when most other people are doing it.
You don’t get more time to complete the tasks if you’re doing it with a smaller group, and the number of tasks that need to be completed doesn’t dynamically shrink either; the number of curious ores you have to collect is always 60 whether you’re doing the event with 60 other people or doing it by yourself, etc.
The fact that your reward is determined by how many tasks get done in the first part of the event is awful design because people only want to participate if they see other people participating first, and many people show up way too late to contribute to unlocking a higher reward level.

It works better in warmode.
It’s even worse in war mode from what I’ve seen.
The event doesn’t seem like it was designed with war mode in mind at all; the guards at the base will become hostile to you if you’ve accidentally hit a member of the opposite faction or heal someone who has.

The problem with this event is that outside of reset day, you have zero chance of a spontaneous group of people who just happened to be on the same shard, reaching the critical mass required to complete all 12 tasks since you need a minimum of about 30 people to do it in time.
The only way around this (which I did just a few minutes ago in-game), is to post a group in the custom group finder. Only then do you stand a chance of getting the requisite 30-40 players. Although that being said, this doesn’t always work. I’m looking at one such posting in the group finder right now with only 1 member in it and the event has already started. So RIP to that guy.
The lesson here? Blizz should have implemented a WQ type function that allows for instant automatic LFG postings with the click of a button just like they do with certain elite WQs like world bosses etc.

is tier 3 the highest you can go or does it go higher?

I went there a few times and nothing was happening, then I went there and completed it… I think I got a green, maybe blue box with junk in it and the map icon suggested it was a weekly thing.
So I never went back.

I believe there’s a tier 4, but tier 3 is the highest reward I’ve managed to get, and it was only one time and only on reset day.
According to Wowhead:
The reward received from the Researchers Under Fire event will depend on how many tasks you complete during Phase 1 of the event.
-
Completing at least 3 tasks awards you a Researcher’s Gift;
- This bag contains 250 Loamm Niffen reputation, 15 Unearthed Fragrant Coin, a ilvl396 piece of gear and a chance at the Devourer Lobstrok Battle Pet.
-
Completing at least 6 tasks awards you a Appreciative Researcher’s Gift;
-
Completing at least 9 tasks awards you a Thankful Researcher’s Gift;
-
Completing all 12 tasks awards you a Indebted Researcher’s Gift.
The gift you get from tier 4 contains 1000 niffen rep

I think this is one of the major problems with the zone, i haven’t been able to play a lot of late but i pop on when i can, and usually the zone is completely dead, which means i can’t do much of anything. Last night i popped on and pretty much every single rare was up and untouched, but even as a half decently geared warlock with a personal tank, trying to solo the vast majority of the rares is a waste of time.
Perhaps we could get some type of Wintergrasp/resilience type buff for the zone that stacks higher and higher the fewer people there are in the area?

I was in a large group that dominated the events and we still only managed 10/12. That was the last time I did it and the last time I will.

I’ve gone 12/12 the last 4 hours in a group finder group.

Last time I went there nothing was happening. No idea what it is or how it works and probably never gonna find out.

The zone is dead because there isn’t really a point to doing that content. I go and get my 1500 rep done, get my half spark and I leave the zone. I don’t like being under ground and I don’t really care about rare farming. I did that and nothing good dropped. I’d rather farm gold and buy the pets I want or wait until next xpac when I can solo the rares myself.
Rare farming would be a thing IF we didn’t cap on drakes per week and IF we could upgrade a certain amount of drakes each week to the next tier…then the zone would be packed with 40m raids farming rares because they would be worth the time investment.

Noticed this. I did it today, think I had like 4/12 even though I did the entire event. We just couldn’t do things. I even died myself. It is NOT friendly for solo/small groups.
I wont be doing it at all in the future, only did it for my “aiding the accord”

As with anything in this game, the juice has to be worth the squeeze and, just like the reach before, it very much isn’t worth it. The only people who the rewards are even remotely decent for are the most casual (and likely to a high degree bad) players. The confusing upgrade system is a massive turnoff and thanks to how it does work, still doesn’t incentivize anyone who does real content to do it.
It’ll likely get nerfed soon enough but not enough to be soloable. The best thing for it would be some kind of fundamental change to shards where players are more aggressively placed in shards for that event so you’re always in shards with players actively doing it or just make a mini scenario/event that is queueable and instanced…and FFS give relevant rewards.

The main problem is you only need to do it once a week and there’s zero incentive to do repeats, so if you dont zerg it by wednesday or so good luck fielding a group.

It should be soloable in the same fashion that The Feast is soloable. Completion is possible but not high on the reward end. In that sense.
In anycase, Blizzard, if they want their two areas (Forbidden Reach) to be useable, will have to tweak it in some way.

I have played for 15 years and never have I seen a new patch zone become so dead and deserted so fast even on the highest population realms. Got a strong feeling the game is in a really bad state population wise

…we must be playing different games.
Zaralek Caverns aren’t dead and deserted on Proudmoore.
I should mention this is on the EU side NA is probably better of still
If you complete all 12 events (racing the timer in the middle to spawn and defeat all 3 rares) there is an epic tier 4 reward box.
My server pulled it off on Tuesday. It’s very much a Zerg check of “how many people can you concentrate in this area”.
