With the new patch, you can upgrade emblems so you can get higher level gear.
Does this mean the death of Raid or Die? That scrubs like me can get good gear if I am willing to grind it out?
If so, well done Blizz! Well done!

raid or die hasn’t been a thing in a while. but yes.
Hasn’t been since legion.
I include M+ in that, but that would make the title too long.
Not really then. You still need to do content that drop gear on the champion track in order to even use the wyrm that you would acquire with this trade-up system. If you still limit yourself to only world content, then odds are you were already just getting veteran gear at most, and you’re seeing much of a change.
I didn’t see that in the Blizz statement.
So, in Season 3, players who have run out of upgrades to purchase with a given Crest will be able to exchange their Crests upwards. To use Dragonflight Season 2 numbers, players had no more use for Whelpling’s Shadowflame Crests after reaching ilvl 411 in every gear slot (using the same rules as the catch-up discount uses), Drake’s Shadowflame Crests at ilvl424, and Wyrm’s Shadowflame Crests at ilvl437. Trade-ups will become available at those thresholds.
Trade-ups will cost a 6-to-1 ratio; once a trade-up is available, players will be able to spend 90 Crests to get 15 crests of the higher level. This will count towards both the cap on the lower level Crest being spent (since you have to earn them) and the higher level Crest being purchased, so players have no incentive to do lower-level content for Crests, though if they’re not capped then they’ll still be able to get some benefit.
Yes, and if you don’t do content that drop champion track gear, how are you ever gonna use those wyrm crests, the one random drop from suffused camp (or 10.2 equivalent)? Then what?
Your gear will still be on a fixed upgrade track. So Champion gear won’t ever go as high as Myth gear, even if you can gradually upgrade Whelpling crests to Aspect crests.
You don’t need to raid to get Myth gear, though.
As has been said, gear still has tracks and you need to reach a certain item-level before you can exchange crests upwards. You can’t reach past ilvl 476 with Champion Gear, but if that ilvl is high enough for you, then you can stop there. If it’s not, then you’ll need to get Hero Gear from Heroic Raid or +17 dungeons (end-of-run) or +8 dungeons (great vault once a week reward).
Tracks will look something like this (may not be exact but it likely close).
Aspect crests are still useless if you don’t have hero or myth track items.
