Hi! I know this post has received a lot of attention but I would like to add that blizz should add at least 1 passive dmg healer spec in this game to cater towards healers that don’t do dmg. That is just my commonsense answer and topics like this wouldn’t be so conflicted. Also, if you’re wondering about “passive dmg” I meant like acid rain, a spell that does both dmg and healing at the same time.
Darn right you should not dps as a healer.
this isnt’ ffxiv where there are only 2 dps in a 4 person party.
we have 3 full time dps per party, there is ZERO need for healers to
dps. I will never dps as a healer in WOW. Never, Never, never.
I dont care how crappy the dps’ers are - they do their job - i’ll do mine.
I want to know why the conversation hasn’t come up with this is … DPS should heal themselves too, or mitigate damage when they can… it is the same argument. Or Tanks which we know have massive ‘mitigation/heals’ it seems of late. Why is there always the focus on heals… they DON’T heal enough or now you have to DPS too…
I quite healing around the beginning of SL… before that, I was Heals since BC. Just tired of the drama and toxicity. Just MY opinion.
Wow, this sure was worth dredging up.
Asking you to spend a GCD on a DoT or a Smite when healing isn’t necessary isn’t a herculean ask; you’re making the fight take longer when you dig your heels in and refuse to do any damage.
I try to on my druid by dropping wild growth every now and then.
I’ll do occasional flame shock, lava burst, and lightning bolt when I’m healing. Because otherwise I’m just standing there doing nothing when there’s no damage coming in, and that isn’t exactly fun.
Also, interrupts. Shamans have a pretty OP interrupt.
Remember guys, this thread might be one of the reason healing is the way it is now.
Why can’t we get threads auto locked?
You’re not required to do damage. That’s the DPS’s job. Unless you’re pushing 28+ then yeah, I’d assume you’d probably want to do damage, as that could time the key. But anything lower you can just heal, it’s not gonna make or break the key
The answer is a little more complicated than that. Technically speaking, yes they are banned as is any software that modifies the game. That said, FF14 can’t actually tell if you’re using a DPS meter or not. Discussing performance isn’t against the rules, and tracking performance on something like ff14logs is perfectly allowed, but using someone’s performance as an excuse to harass them is ban-worthy. That’s due to the harassment though, not the measuring of performance. The reality is that DPS meters are pretty common in FF14 and people don’t get banned for them unless they’re being stupid about it.
That said, the original statement in the quote doesn’t rely on DPS meters. Damage and healing is a little different in FF14 with the main difference being that damage events are significantly less frequent in FF14. The other main difference is that all of a healer’s best healing abilities are oGCD while their damage abilities tend to be GCD. What this means is that even casual healers will spend something like 60%-70% of their GCDs on damage. It’s very very easy to see when a White Mage is never casting Glare even without a DPS meter.
I see this argument is still going on. I don’t argue the point to a healer if the person wishes to do dps, I wouldn’t complain about it.
We’ve already litigated this issue. Every player is expected to fill every single global during an encounter. By choosing to just not use your damaging spells, you are opting to be afk 10-30% of the time.
In other words, you are being carried by people who are playing at 90-100% activity.
Every player is expected to do their given role, if they’re under performing then it can be addressed but if the run is a success. keep the mouth shut and move on.
I’ll be frank, I’ll probably never speak up if my healer chooses to do 0 dps and we complete our objective; however, I will absolutely notice it, and actively avoid playing with that person again.
I don’t enjoy playing with people who do not value the time and effort of their teammates by not putting in the effort commensurate to the content we are doing.

as a healer i notice dps that stand in stuff, refuse to use defensives, fail to move out of avoidable dmg x10 more times than a healer doing “not enough dps”… so more times its fail dps that the healer is babysitting causing low dps… so might be a bit more aware of the run
And that isn’t what this is about.
It’s about healers standing still doing nothing when they can dps
A healer that refuses to dps when they can is no different than a dps not moving out of the bad.
Healers are just as bad as dps gameplay wise.
It’s about healers standing still doing nothing when they can dps
the whole point of this is “Healer not doing dps” it doesnt’ matter if their babysitting or not using gcd’s “correctly”… it will be looked at as the same in MOST peoples eyes as they don’t care. The healer didn’t “pull” their weight and we can’t use them again
The funny thing, I don’t go out of my way to dps as a healer, and often there isn’t a chance to. But I do when there is a chance and I’d otherwise be bored. I’ve had people compliment me about seeing flame shock on the boss and me interrupting.
Ok. And if you don’t DPS when you can…you are holding the group back.
I am just also over this narrative of " I can NEVER add DPS because my group is always horrible cause dps suck but I play perfectly."
The funny thing, I don’t go out of my way to dps as a healer, and often there isn’t a chance to.
That’s the thing too. No one complaining is actually getting into groups where it is required or needed.
You don’t have to dps as a healer at even +20s. I don’t go out of my way to dps. But if I can throw in some chain lightnings I will. I can get another 30 to 40k DPS on the dungeon over all. It helps.
Yep that’s the point I was trying to make. I do toss out flame shocks and lava bursts when I can, even if it isn’t all that often.
