No 10.3 Means They Are Preparing Shorter Expansions Releases In The Future

Basically the title.

They confirmed 3 expansions in a row, which is a first time in WoW history.

For any of you who are not aware of the SL content drought during the final patch. Otherwise known as the “fated raid” season… it was really not a success as Blizzard hoped it would be. Everything dropped on the last season of SL (m+, raids, and overall online active players)

I am only counting expansions since M+ came out since that set up modern WoW today. Legion and BFA both had .3 patches.

DF is heading the same route as SL but with a twist; we might see shorter expansion cycles starting from next expansion. It was confirmed in the blizzcon interview that there is going to be faster expansion releases, but we really don’t know the exact timeframe of how much “faster” it is.

Good. Fated seasons suck and content droughts suck too

Future expansions will get:

4 new zones, 8 new dungeons, 1 new raid
.1 patch - mega dungeon
.2 patch - 2nd raid

There won’t be any significant new features. Zones will be designed with AI.

Metzen went onto stage and quite literally said they’ll be delivering these updates to us faster than we are used to.

But I guess good detective work! :male_detective:

They probably do want closer to a yearly release schedule. They would not have announced 3 expansions at once if they were not going to go quicker than they normally have been. Each expansion having like 2 seasons. Then they ask for another $90 or whatever to play the next part.

There is no reason to believe that.

Yeah, wrapping up the “Azeroth” story and probably prepping to go into WoW2 with a new engine and a new world. WoW1 will go into legacy mode, but you’ll have 20+ years of content to play around in.

The shear content size of a game this old is also it’s biggest turnoff for new players. We don’t see it though because we are junkies and suffer from sunk cost fallacy biases.

Because they said exactly that. :person_facepalming:

Never going to happen.

They won’t call it WoW2. It will still be called WoW, it’s just all the legacy content will be a different client like when you go to play classic.

Bellular went over the publicly available data and retention plus raid and m+ engagement was actually higher in s4 than s3.

I’m down for it if we get the same amount of content with less downtime in between patches.

That’s only because the participation increased at the end of S4 because of pre-DF’s release. A lot of guilds died for pretty much the first half of S4. As for M+ you are totally wrong there was 2,317,864 individual characters in M+ for S4, in S3 there was 4,062,058 individual characters. The data is right there.

There was half the amount of people participating in S4 of SL M+ then in S3.

They aren’t going to build another version of the game.

No 10.3 doesn’t mean they aren’t going to do a Fated raid season and aim for WW release on the usual cadence next fall. There was no 9.3, and that didn’t make DF come out any earlier.

This ^. Everyone needs to read the rest of the Dev Q&A where the “no there won’t be a 10.3” confirmation came from. They did NOT say there wouldn’t be a filler. Quite the opposite if you ask me.

Post-10.2, will there be a SL season 4 style thing?
Nothing to announce, but SLs4 was really successful.

The lady did confirm that Amirdrassil was the last raid of DF. I suspect we’ll get a season 4, but no new raid, or they’ll just let season 3 drag on for a year while they cook.

Both are equally possible.

Beyond the price point concerns, which I don’t personally care about but I know a lot of people do, I don’t mind the shorter cadence.

If they made it three big seasons, each six months long with an 18 month expac duration, it makes sense. Three expac in 4.5 years is fine with me, especially if things aren’t drug out.

Honestly the only real concern is the eventual level and item squish unless they stagnate level growth or have characters develop wide instead of tall.

This isn’t the first time they talked about 1 year expansions. We will see.
