Smoldering Ember Wyrm in Return to Karazhan requires Soul Fragment to be clicked on and it will start a timer. Members of my guild and I have run this a few times this week with different toons and it appears to be broken. The timer does not start. Did this break with the level squish or are we missing something?
You have to click 5 crystals, each will give a stacking timer. Don’t interrupt the channeling, or you fail and have to wait a week. After the 5th crystal you get a 5-minute timer to talk to Medivh and summon the dragon.

Yes we have done it in weeks past to get the mount this week we were not able to get a timer/buff to start. When you click the first one you get a buff and it stacks until you have 5 then you have to go to Medivh.
Me and my friend are having the same issue. Been doing the Smoldering Ember Wyrm run for months now and was working fine, in the last couple weeks it has stopped activating the buff at the first crystal. I would assume level squish or just broken through updates leading to Shadowlands
I’ve been running Return to Kara 5 - 7 times per week on different toons for about a month and no timer, not “chill in the air” when I zone in, nada…
Edit: Leaving my op for educational purposes - I’m an idiot. I’ve been thinking it’s a Raid and had my settings wrong.
