Night Fae or Venthyr?

Im having trouble deciding.

i like Night fae it attracts me more but im likely going frost ( not sure yet i dont mind going arcane just that im most comfortable playing frost/fire since that is the 2 specs i’ve played the most plus arcane seems to not be as good as those 2 most of the time )

problem with that too is venthyre is best for frost in PvE. Do i play what i want or do i min max? i mean i really can’t see much use out of the night fae ability as frost with the aoe dmg feels kinda useless to me.

any suggestions/what your doing with your mages? i REALLY don’t like venthyre tbh nothing about them wows me but the min maxing side of me wants to min max despite i don’t need to since i don’t push that high of a content to make it worth its while. also i do expect nerfs to covenants down the line.

I’ll be going Venthyr for frost…this Wowhead guide just got released and is very useful for picking https://www.wowhead.com/guides/frost-mage-best-covenant-shadowlands

Me personally i’m not too worried about looks (although I like the way Venthyr looks) as I am about how well it will do in raids…as far as looks I dislike Necrolords the most lol

Also it’s up to you if you want to min/max…if you’re not cutting edge, you hear it all the time lol, it doesn’t matter what you play…Night Fae isn’t too bad tbh

Just play what you find most fun. These people min maxing covenants are dumb. Dumb because numbers are always going to be adjusted so there won’t always be a best and dumb because you are a slave to playing the absolute top simulated dps. These people will never be happy

It’s not dumb to want to play at your best though…min/maxing isn’t a bad thing…if choosing what is going to be good going into mythic or even heroic when it opens is what people want to do, more power to them, it makes the content that much easier to do…what’s dumb is not caring at all and holding your guild back…

When you become a slave to the numbers it becomes dumb. Let’s face it, the dps difference is going to be small. If you think like this you will never be happy in and game. Ever

Lets be real, Frost never lasts as “the” spec… Trust me you’ll regret not choosing the covenant that is most appealing to you. A 2 year expansion is a long time…

While WoWhead’s write-up does say Venthyr is currently best (remember, this could all change shortly after release) for Frost, it also says that if you are interested in swapping specs Night Fae is most versatile.

My mage is an alt and for this reason I would likely go Night Fae. I played Fire all of Legion, but didn’t enjoy it so I switched to Frost. I think planning not just for covenant, but also spec enjoyment is the best you can do. As long as the difference in dps is low, it won’t matter too much.

^This is the best statement here.

In all likelihood, we’ll all start out playing frost; by the end of the expansion, we’ll all be playing fire.

Night Fae seems to be the most flexible covenant for mages, just in general. Not to mention that all three mage specs are pretty darn close to each other in performance, I prefer a covenant that’s good for all of them. Night Fae only falls behind for ST/raid performance for Frost, but it’s not a huge difference.

im going venthy since im going to be frost (raid and m+) but we all know by 9.1 maybe 9.2 fire will be king again , u can change covenants it takes a while so by the time 9.1 ptr is up and see fire becoming the spec to go , u can work on that ! (plus legendary)

You don’t like fire ? What the hell is wrong with you

I’m going Venthyr.
I only do M + for the weekly chest.

Also, if all mages go Night Fae (plus some other class) who says that Blizzard does not apply the same treatment that the Kyrians received?

Well according to sims, right now Venthyr is looking like the to go covenant for all mage spec for ST and not much of a difference for 3 targets. It’s actually better than Night Fae if things hold as it is right now, so I’d say Venthyr over Night Fae.

Not sure where you’re looking for your sims, but the latest sims in the Altered Time research shows Fire/Arcane best with Night Fae in both ST and 3+ target cleave scenarios.

The only situation where NF isn’t the best is ST, and for Frost (where Venthyr is the top sim). So if you pretty much only raid, as Frost, then Venthyr is the way to go.

I’m using Toegrinder Mage Sims and according to that, Venthry looks a lot more like the default. It’s the best covenant for frost at 5% dps boost in ST compared to Night Fae,
and second best for both fire and arcane with Night Fae only around 2-3% stronger than Venthry.

Tbh with that of a small difference, I don’t think it really matters which we pick. Factoring human error/limits vs bot sims, it seems like things are fairly balance between the two covenants.

Yea i jusy checked the new one so now it changed but before it was venthre for frost for m+ and raiding

I think that at this point the numbers are showing Night Fae coming out on top for most situations (outside of frost) for their covenant abilities. Also I think I had read that NF is getting access to a second potency conduit before Venthyr.

So if you want to min/max go Night Fae, but if you like Venthyr go Venthyr.

I am (or was) heavily leaning towards Venthyr for looks, until I read about them not getting a second potency conduit until week 9. This decision is becoming more and more difficult as we get closer. Haha Though I am skeptical with HOW good Night Fae is looking for mages overall, makes me not trust that Blizz is going to keep it that way.

All of us freaking out for an extra 2% damage or so, but such is the life of mmos.

These guides (wowhead) never include pvp… what would be the best covenant for pvp? Cause if the dps gains are marginal in pve maybe there is a covenant that shines in pvp…I’d pick that one. I think last time I a watched discussion about it the best choice was Venthyr. Does everyone agree with that?

Yep that’s also what I heard about second conduit first being available to Night Fae on the 4th week but will be available to Venthyr on week 8. That is the biggest drawback to Mythic raiders choosing Venthyr as covenant.

If we include pvp to the mix, then Venthyr for sure will have the advantage.
