Night elf/Void elf relations

Since there haven’t been any major interactions between these two races yet (I don’t even think Umbric and Shandris had any dialogue with one another during the war campaign) I was curious as to what everyone here thinks relations between these two races might be like right now.

Umbric, and Alleria by extension seem more than willing to lend their aid to the war effort, as we saw in the Battle of Lordaeron and during the war campaign. And seeing as how Umbric is eager for opportunities to show the Alliance just how useful the void elves can be (and that they can be trusted), I would find it easy to believe that the void elves may side with Tyrande when it comes to dealing with the Horde.

Personally, I think relations between them may be a bit… flip-floppy. In times of peace, I could easily find most kaldorei to be put off by their warped appearances and distrustful of them- they are after all, highborne who dived too far into their magical studies and paid the price for it. I imagine highborne of Shen’dralar may be curious of them and a bit more open to their presence.

In times of war however, I think this is where they would truly shine, and the night elves would see them for their worth.

I’m curious to see what your night elf character thinks of them, and vice-versa for void elf characters. Or heck, if you don’t RP as a night elf, how does your Alliance character of a different race view them?

(I’ll leave the question open for Horde RPers as well, even though I’m certain the vast majority of them would view void elves as “kill on sight”. =P )

I have three kaldorei that I roleplay; a death knight, hunter, and demon hunter. My hunter is as traditional as night elves can get and views pretty much anything with suspicion, especially any void elves’ ties or loyalty to Silvermoon. Peace or war, she does not like void elves and distrusts void magic as much as fel.

My death knight and demon hunter however are much more sympathetic with void elves on the whole, considering how they are both “outcast” classes wielding outcast magic. My death knight can discuss the Fall of Quel’thalas and Lich King with void elves while my Illidari already has history with blood elves from the Black Temple.

Those are some perspectives. Good question!

The Night Elves wouldn’t give the Void Elves the time of day if they were High Elves and worked to actively sabotage their kingdom when they were Blood Elves.

They gained admission to the Alliance solely on the reputation of Alleria, another High Elf the Night Elves couldn’t care less about.

Umber and Shandris DID have dialogue during the war campaign, though it might have been a bit hidden (some of it fired after accepting/turning in quests for instance, and you could only hear it if you were still in range).

At any rate, that dialogue indicated they are tentatively approving of each other. Umber seems to be fairly honorable and dedicated to the Alliance’s cause, which Shandris appreciates, and Umber likes how motivated Shandris is in the war and how she’s at least open to his unconventional tactics with the Void. I’m not sure how much this is just how the characters interactions versus how the two races would interact, though.

As far as the races goes…with the hints that Elune makes use of Shadow magic, night elves might not be as turned off to the whole void thing as say, Draenei or a human priest of the Light might be. That the void elves got their magic by through delving too far in magical studies might still be very uncomfortable for them, I’d imagine. Void elves seem to come in two flavors: either all they care about is the power (and so maybe they look down on night elves for their past qualms with magic or…just don’t care, seeing the night elves as insignificant fools) OR they’re of the brand of high/blood elf who wanted to be part of the Alliance all along and the void was a convenient excuse to get there. For the latter, night elves are just another ally.

For own my characters, it depends on the character’s backstory, but here we go…

For my void elf character, he generally likes the night elves, perceiving them as understanding his long-lived perspective (he’s been around for a few thousand years himself; humans are hopelessly fast-paced and naive in comparison), though the nature worship thing is alien to him. He’s always been a wannabe-Alliance boi, a high elf priest of the Light who fell to using Shadow around the time of BC/Wrath to survive, so he never much minded the night elf unease with sin’dorei magic and fel corruption, having the same concerns about his people himself.

For my two night elf characters, they’re…reserved. Like Shandris, they respect the skills and seeming loyalty the void elves have to the Alliance, but they are leery of the dark magic they use. One of them was convinced by his wife to see void elves more as refugees of the jerks in Silvermoon, but he’s a taciturn character in general, so he’s not particularly friendly to anybody.

Finally, for my blood elf characters…well. Keelath here hated them until one of his family became one. Now it’s just awkward as fel, but he’s starting to make a distinction between the void elves who went void-y for power and those that were just caught on the wrong side of the void at some point (as half of the velf RPers I meet don’t follow the Telogrus Rift canon, but instead got their infusions by Old God possession, a trip through volatile Outland energies, or something like that). In general though, most ren’dorei he’ll happily kill on sight, believing them to be the MUAHAHA POWAZ kind.

Yes. This dialogue was amazing and fleshed out who Umbric was. A pity more people didn’t see it.

The gist of it is that Shandris pointedly remembers what happened the last time the high elves (nee highborne) screwed around with dangerous magic. What Umbric says goes a long away to smoothing things out with his views on this dangerous power, and his stance with the Alliance.

What I think, though? Is that they’re still those cousins who don’t really get along. The analogy I had made before is that they’re both actors, but one is on Broadway and one is Hollywood critical acclaim. Both of them seem to have issues with each other, but to people on the outside, it’s like “…you guys are both actors, though, right?”

I think - my own take, by the way - is that (for the night elves) it wouldn’t so much be that they were using Void, specifically. It would be “Oh, those stuck up jerks dabbling in dangerous magic again? Idiots.” Whereas void elves are like “Oh, look, the forest bumpkins are scared of ‘teh magickz’ they don’t understand.”

The kind of people who argue all the time, so much so that you wonder why they spend any time with each other. Like, at all. Until you conclude that they work together seamlessly as a combat unit, with one’s strengths complementing the others weaknesses, leaving any who stand against them confused, hamstrung, and ultimately dead.

Either that, or what happens between the sheets is straight up magic.

I like the kal’dorei people. I mean, the whole nature thing baffles me. I hate dirt, and find nature only pretty to look at - not to be a part of.
That said, I respect the millennia of culture, experience and history they have and I cried for them in the War of Thorns.
I get not all of them may accept me or my people, but so is the rest of the Alliance in some aspects. I get it. We use unstable dangerous magic, and we have a history of letting this kind of energy go out of control BUT we good now. We have Alleria and Locus Walker to teach us control and balance.
We have lost our home twice now. First the scourge and then the exile. Now that we have a place to stay, we’ll fight for it - even if not everyone greets me with hugs and tea

The Kaldorei society nowadays is pretty different from the one at the end of WC3.

Currently we have Kaldorei mages, from the Highborne that got accepted back into society to the Kaldorei that learned under those Highborne, they have, with some resistance accepted Demon Hunters in their society.

The way i see it, their society have been through so many changes, that there are different views inside of it. Shandris seems to have developed respect for Umbric as it is seen in the War Campaign. I imagine Malfurion and the druids wouldn’t see void magic with good eyes, you know, Void Magic is the source of the Nightmare after all.

But they can have healthy relationships i’m sure.
