It doesn’t seem hard to me to write some lore about knights of acherus that chose a different path of study or something along those lines. I love lore but it is almost never a limiting factor in WoW, which is both a good thing and a bad thing depending on the situation. A double edged sword if you will.
Funny thing is that none of your examples are actually a spellsword lmfao. I’ll agree that we’re over saturated on melee classes and the next class should be ranged, but that’s your only good point.
Honestly, I think our best chance at “Necromancers” would be a fourth spec for Death Knights, themed more closely to the WarCraft II era Death Knights.
It’s not a terrible idea. Honestly I could get behind it. But I really think that they could easily be their own class as well.
Then define spellsword. All it seems to imply is it is melee and uses spells. How does it fit into WoW? The closest we get is Kael’thas when he used Felo’melorn to duel Arthas if you mean a mage that is melee. You gonna take one of the artifact weapons and say it represents a different class now?
In D&D, it’s its own class.
In Diablo, it’s its own class.
Necromancers are written in a way that makes their representatives important in those universes. In WoW, it’s always just been a stepping stone to a greater echelon of power, whether it be progressing to a Warlock, Lich, or Death Knight.
It reminds me of a lot of the Demon Hunter concepts that were coming out before we actually had the class - virtually all of them included a ranged crossbow build because of Diablo’s Demon Hunters. But just because the class shares its name with an equivalent in another setting, it does not mean that they are equivalent to each other in execution.
Spellsword has more basis in wow than bard does. It’s a melee mage. Think arcane, think frost, think fire. I’m way too tired to make a write up on possible class abilities and and whatnot, but if you can’t see the difference between a melee mage and a shaman than you’re too far gone anyway
I see what you’re saying and I don’t necessarily disagree with it, but I’ll state again that the lore is especially malleable in WoW. Void elves came pretty quickly from thin air. I could see necromancers being a spawn of acherus in some form, or even from something loosely related. A spec that raises undead armies similar to demo lock, a spec based around the themes of pain and perhaps blood, and a spec around transformation to a lich (think DCSS necronomicon spell, I forget what it’s called)
I get that the necromancers we’ve seen so far have mostly been small fish, but there’s nothing stopping blizz from changing that
Lore-wise, yes I get what the difference would be, but what would be the difference thematically? Gameplay-wise?
It just seems kinda lame if you mean to take the current mage’s specs and apply them(thematically) to melee abilities.
I’m sure that there can be enough to separate them and make some kind of distinct gameplay. Most classes are already some form of builder-spender or proc-based class anyway, it’s just all a slightly different flavor of the same thing (yes there are exceptions).
Maybe I’ll decide to make a little class write up, if I do I’ll share it with you. I’ve got loose ideas in my head but I haven’t slept in way too long and my ability to communicate is pretty diminished at the moment
Bring on the bard. Two healer specs, only one of which is about actual healing - The other would effectively be support, giving buffs to party and raid members.
Because that would go over well with Paladins and Shamans, who have been struggling to find a niche after their support role was gutted from them.
Tinkers got explosives and stuff though, bard just… plays music. It’s kinda lame.
Question - have we ever actually received an April Fool’s joke?
Battle for Azeroth
I’ve wanted Tinkers since WoW was released so no. It could be the same, but not before. It’s why the engineering profession exists.
I recall Tinkers and Bards coming up during beta. Dark Rangers… they’re definitely a more recent development. People just wanted Forsaken Hunters.
That being said… I think the ship has sailed for both. I really don’t see the current team going for either class. They prefer to subvert expectations.
Also, where’s our Blademasters Rito?
Stop dividing their abilities between monk and warrior and mage.
In my opinion, Blademaster should be a Rogue spec. Either merge Subtlety/Assassination to make room, or add a fourth.
The armoured juggernaut and unarmed fighter do not equate to this class properly.
