Newcomer Q&A

Hey everyone.

So I’m a newcomer to US role-play in general. Due to Covid lockdowns I’m playing at the strangest hours of night in the EU, which of course translate to fairly ordinary hours of the evening in the US. The latency is usually close to identical with EU realms and I don’t really plan on raiding or PvPing either way; so far so good.

However, a few weeks of leveling and (very rarely) role-playing has left me with some questions.

A lot of TRP profiles encourage for others to walk up and initiate RP with them. I trust that I don’t need to say why that’s a problem if everyone is relying on that to happen. Am I missing something here?

I also couldn’t find any realm related archives for player profiles or past server events. Is this something you lot use at all, or are those things generally kept in Google Docs?

Finally, are there any hubs a newcomer should try out? I gather Stormwind is pretty active, but I’d honestly like to know what the alternatives are as well.

Thanks for reading!

What you are missing is the fact that there are numerous people who are shy, scared, and do not know how to approach a character especially a new one to the realm they have never read the profile of. You have a few options for this.

  1. Whisper the person you are interested in before walking up.

This allows you to establish a connection and to let them know OOCly to read your profile to see if they are interested in your walk up. Now me, I choose the other option which counter’s literally everyone’s shyness, but, it comes with risk.

  1. Walk up to anyone and do not care. Just emote accordingly.

Look, if people are shy and want a walk up? Fine, they can read the character’s profile’s first tab, and then the first glances. Doing this method leaves them off Guard mildly for the About section of the profile though in my years of experience. If you are just looking for RP for the sake of RP, no matter the reason? Go for it. Keep in mind, suddenly engaging in combat is frowned upon.

Not everyone uses the roll20 style method of Combat. Some prefer literally to emote out every last detail and such. This does not account for you or the other player’s perspective of the owner of the character’s stamina, mana pool, etc. You get the idea. This method you have to be careful with, more often then not, I tend to lose most of the fights or anything like that. My character icly is arrogant lightly but holds back her strength. She thinks she is hot stuff after all. /awoo.

I have my personal things on google docs just in case we have trp3 wipes.

SW Is after 2 pm to like 8 am EST (NA time of course.)

Any other questions, Let this Wuggin know. At least that time is in only my experience. Different districts get popular at different times of course.

Glad I could help.

Hey there, welcome to the server — it was great to meet you last night!

To answer some of your questions:

Apart from Rabald’s reply, I’d point out that there is a small but noticeable minority of the server that is standoffish or elitist; in other words, hostile to walk-up. I think the walk-up friendly tags you see on profiles represent an attempt to distinguish sociable players from unsociable players.

There’s also a possible cultural element. Most of Moon Guard is American and of a certain generation that puts a premium on friendliness and being welcoming to strangers. You’ll also routinely see LGBTQ+ friendly tags for the same reason — not because there’s rampant bigotry on the server, but because people want to distinguish themselves by their openness.

Ditto to Rabald’s reply. Moon Guard wiki is where much of that info lives.

95% of RP on Moon Guard happens in SW during peak hours. That said, there are alternatives if you know where to look. Booty Bay periodically sees RP, as do places like Gilneas (ruins) and Dalaran. But accessing that RP without knowing the operatives can prove difficult.

Most regular World RP is curated by themed guilds. If you’re interested in getting outside SW, find a guild that has its HQ elsewhere — chances are that the guild’s members regularly RP there. Beyond a guild, there are a fair number of people you’ll meet (myself included) that love World RP; befriend one and plan scenes in cool places.

Ahhh yes I forgot part three I knew I forgot something.

  1. Cliques and Social Distancing

Some individuals will or may appear hostile to approach. This comes from either their character’s backstory or just the puppteer being sort of… Emotionless to put it kindly behind the screen. In short, you will run into hostile people in this community. People who enjoy the darker side of RP like kidnap, torture, murder… burying someone alive, carving runic artwork into their victim’s arm…Guns, drugs… Yeah… It is sort of hard to differenciate at least through my eye between the two It is like

“Please walk up.”
/e struts on over
/e other person pulls out a gun. “Go away”
/e wanders off trembling.

Some folk like the darker themes of RP. Me personally? My character is heavy invested in those Darker themes but only if both parties are in agreement about it prior. After all, that is why I said in part one. “Whispering always helps to break the ice.”

To further clarify about the realm’s activities. If you join a guild then there are events though at least in my experience everything takes place after dusk. People like to sleep (I have insomnia so that doesn’t matter for me). Just, please, post anymore questions you have. We are always here and willing to help. <3

Don’t you tempt me with this. I’d love more open world roleplay!

Guise did a wonderful job clarifying though. Thank you darling.

I’d argue that playing a darker character that participates in any of those activities (as I do) shouldn’t preclude people from being able to engage in walk-up RP with you.

It demonstrates the poorest sort of writing to reply with /e pulls gun, menaces stranger. “Get lost.” when you’re approached as a character involved in darker themes. More often than not, people who write like this are poorly socialized and ill-equipped to portray believable villains.

There’s always a reason to engage. There’s always a way to forge a story. People who shoo away walk-up under the pretense of villainy are concealing very poorly their inability to imagine how morally dubious people actually interact with the world, their own deficits in ability to write compelllingly, and their own insociability or anxieties.

That was just my example, it wasn’t the best one but again thank you for clarifying my post.

Your a newcomer welcome! Just walk up to people. You can talk to them. Or if you sit there long enough they will talk to you. There is tons and tons of rp happening on this server.

Hiya! and Welcome!

I really really like using Discord to find upcoming events! It is also loaded with tons of Guild and RP Groups, as well as individuals looking for specific types of RP! (That’s how I found my Nanny job!) Here is the Blizzard forum link to all things RP Discord! Hope it helps!
