New WoW cosmology (spoilers)

Kinda glad i told people not to buy the book.

We donā€™t actually know this, she is never mentioned in relation to Elune.
She is the companion of Ysera, and is also tied to the emerald dream as the physical world.

Aessina is Yseraā€™s everlasting companion, both in the Emerald Dream and the physical world

sorryā€¦sorry, my faultā€¦she was ā€¦isā€¦kinda both yseras companion and ysera is ā€¦ā€œelunes petā€ā€¦so i take a step further ahead and have something wrong remembered^^

My running theory is that Elune found Eonar as a slumbering world soul and nurtured/raised (some would say corrupted) into a being of nature and order, sort of like a mother/mentor figure. So being that Eonar elevated Ysera into the green aspect she was more likeā€¦ her daughterā€™s pet?

You gotta look after the family pet dragon.

I donā€™t think that is new as much as the cosmology map tilted into the perspective of the Shadowlands, just as the last one was the Titansā€™ variant.

The last one is the Great Dark Beyond Mythos variant.

The backstory of the Great Clash of Light and Void is in the Mythos Chapter of the Chronicle and thus is merely Myths.

In the Chapter after that(which should be hard Lore unlike the preceding Chapter which is outright called Mythos) the Chronicle shows debate on the origin of the Emerald Dream and questions how Freya created the place without using itā€™s Omniscient Narrator position to answer the question.

Just because its the Titan Myth doesnā€™t mean it is wrong, and the Titan variant has far more weight to it since it doesnā€™t bias its towards its own cosmic duality. This Shadowlands variant clearly has major flaws in that Death and Life are both meaningless esoteric forces without a preexisting universe of some sort. The Titan variant has a logical chain of creation as well. Light and Void clash creating Fel. The Light and Void now having a point of commonality in opposition to Fel creates Order. The interaction of Light and Fel creates Life, while the interaction of Order and Void creates Death. With all these forces the system enters into balance with further interactions creating the Elements, which then allow for the existence of the Mortal Realm.

Light and Void are also far more hi concept realms where they are literally nothingness and existence.

Eh.

Maybe itā€™s just because Iā€™m in a foul mood with this game but honestly I preferred the other one.

Iā€™m not really sure why decay is on the opposite side of life. Itā€™s certainly less pretty to look at than flowers but itā€™s kind of a process necessary for life to flourish. Circle of life and all that.

I also preferred necromancy being the orb off death. I really feel SL didnā€™t contradict this idea, supported it really, seeing as the Primus and Jailor have the most crossover. Not exactly in a healthy way but still.

And Death being represented by the Arbiter is weird to me. That means all of SL is Death magic, yeah? Even Ardenweald?

I know we technically had a Titan leading the Chaos big guns for awhile but I kinda saw that more as a fallen angel thing. Sargeras essentially converting and becoming fully of Chaos like Arthas with Death. So Lively Death Magic is a bit of an odd concept.

Overall Iā€™m not bothered by it. I donā€™t think this will really change anything meaningfully for the story. I didnā€™t feel the previous cosmic wheel had any huge significance to the plot because itā€™s completely arbitrary. The Horde and Alliance have literal armies of people wielding all of the above all the time, and use them to kill all of the above all the time.

Azeroth is basically the one PokĆ©mon trainer who trains every type so Iā€™m not too worried.

I want to revisit this, because Iā€™m passionate about this topic. The Sun has already been vilified through the Arakkoa. Rukhmar on Draenor.

Anā€™she being Zorval, The Dark Sun, would be in line with the lore. The Arakkoa were an Aprexis society that existed during The Ordering of the Universe. They would know more about the Cosmic Truth a fledgling race like the Tauren.

What I find interesting about the Arakkoa myth is itā€™s still the Divine Marriage between Light and Shadow but the gender roles are flipped, The Light, Rukhmar and the The Shadow, Enzu, and they unify against Death, Sethe.

When the whispers talk about stories repeating themselves they are talking about all these pocket mythologies in WoW. There is comparative mythology within the myths of different wow races.

Odyn didnā€™t just trade his eye to Muehā€™zala for the magic to create Valkyr. He must have made other deals because of how he got his dread ravens Huggin and Munnin. He must have some sort of contact with Anzu, or Anzu was in contact with denizens of the Shadowlands like Mushā€™zala. Thereā€™s still so much lore to unpack. Is it ā€œhordeā€ centric? not in the same sense that Elune is seemly Night elf releated (even though Elune isnā€™t just the goddess of night elves, she has many races who worship her.) not really but we do have two mythologies on both Draenor and Azeroth which are noticably similar and have the same Solar>Lunar> Death> Old Gods related cosmology.

I love it, personally.
Titans are dumb.
One of them killed all of them.
How does that happen?

I really feel this is a hugely important point thatā€™s missed a lot. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Blizzard using the cultures of historically marginalized people as inspiration for a fantasy game.

Iā€™m always interested to read about a new culture. I enjoy my own stockā€™s but they were the first ones I read about and probably the most extensively, personal connection and all, so not much in ways of new stories there.

If you have any creative bone in your body, it is impossible to read about the history and folklore of the Ghana Empire or Iroquois Confederacy without your imagination going wild. Humans have done some great and terrible ish all over, and everyone has a good ghost story.

I think itā€™s pretty reasonable to just remember youā€™re on someone elseā€™s property. Do pay attention to your surroundings. You may still accidentally knock over a lamp but at least you can earnestly say it was an accident.

Darn. I thought the new cosmology chart was going to look like the floor of the Imperial Chamber for some reason. Silly me, wrong again. I do think that is what the symbols are on the Imperial Chamber ultimately are, though. Same with the Shadow Throne.

So Shadow is adjacent to Life and Order now? This all seems very confusing and itā€™s interesting that Water is also connected to Shadow!

Itā€™s a Fischer projection

Explain pleaseee! Itā€™s confusing c:

Even in Chronicle, other than the crosswise ā€œpairingā€ of direct opposites (Light across from Void, Life across from Death, Order across from Disorder), the placement of the forces sideways adjacent to one another wasnā€™t really meant to suggest theyā€™re closer to each other in nature. Chronicleā€™s and the Grimoireā€™s charts are ultimately limited two-dimensional representations of what isnā€™t actually a two-dimensional system.

Were it more accurately represented in 3D, all three would likely be equidistant from each other and from the physical universe at the center, with the elements positioned in similar fashion farther in.

The charts place them next to each other because as a flat picture, it doesnā€™t have the option of literally presenting them as omnipresent planes of reality occupying the same ā€œspaceā€ while existing dimensionally out of phase from each other.

I see what you mean!! That does make sense! <3

Yup. This drawing will make sense if youā€™re familiar with projections:

they just rotated the axis + did a reflection

I love it!! Thank you! Thatā€™s a great drawing! So nothing honestly seemed to change from either chart? Itā€™s literally the same thing lol!

the only thing that changed that doesnā€™t hold when doing a projection is the elemental correspondence of Air and Water

In Chronicles, each element (Fire water earth air spirit decay) is between 2 cosmic forces

In Grimoire, each element is in front of 1 cosmic force
